About that last one, a viewer wrote on Letterboxd, "The kind of film that turns up out of nowhere and completely affirms every positive belief I've ever held about cinema." Spot on.

First-class acting and directing (both movies).

Have you watched the show Lupin? It’s one of my favorite foreign TV series and French.

The young beautiful actress from the Swimming Pool is in it. She and the director of the Swimming Pool made another movie together called 8 Women which I remember liking a lot. It’s kind of like Knives Out or Clue where everyone in a house is a murder suspect. Neither is great IMO but we’re critically acclaimed at the time.

Lupin is only like 15 episodes so it's not that much of a time commitment compared to other series and it avoids the faults of a lot of (mainly US) series that go on and on long after they have ran out of ideas just to milk the audience. If you have any interest in heist movies/series, it's definitely a fun watch. Though, if you only have time to watch one Omar Sy project I would recommend Intouchables. Certainly the french movie from the 21st century I enjoyed the most.

Hopefully you can fit La grande illusion into your French movie kick. It is hands down the best French movie ever made.
I'm not sure how accessible it is outside of France because it took decades to reconstitute the entire movie after the Nazis tried to wipe it out of existence and by that point a black and white film about POWs during WW1 who speak a combination of French, English and German was never going to appeal to a mass audience but if you can find a way to watch it, I promise it will be worth it.

Just added "La grande illusion" (available here in Canada on Kanopy). And yes, "Intouchables" is a cool movie (I watched it about 10 years ago, but it's on my watchlist again). Thanks!

Another great French TV series is A French Village (Un village français). It's solely about what happens within one town occupied by the Germans through WW2. It's starts just good, but becomes terrific after the first several episodes. The drama has a stellar cast, a riveting plot, and is bolstered by interviews with French citizens who lived through the occupation.

It's quite long with 7 seasons and 84 episodes.

I enjoyed Interior Chinatown on Hulu. Pretty unique and hard to describe. Waiter gets stuck in a 90's cop show, basically, but there's a lot going on.

I got into Say Nothing on Hulu last night, not knowing if it would be my cup of tea. A historical thriller about the Northern Ireland conflict and the IRA and etc.

It's excellent. Very gripping so far. Excited to keep watching. FX has been hitting so many home runs lately.

I'm enjoying Dune: Prophecy so far. And these two: Like Water for Chocolate (adaptation of the Laura Esquivel novel; Mexican telenovela-ish) and Don't Come Home (Thai mystery thriller on Netflix).

I have it queued up as well, but I've been hooked on The Handmaid's Tale lately. It's on Hulu in the US and Crave here in Canada. I know I'm late to the party on that one, but it's pretty incredible.

Spoiler:
Probably too politically charged to get into here, but Margaret Atwood may be a modern day Nostradamus.

The resurgence of the spy/spy-adjacent genre on TV makes my testicles tingle. Jack Ryan, Day of the Jackal, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Old Man, Lioness, The Agency, Slow Horses, Reacher, Andor (?) ... Bring them on, I'll watch them all! (Or whatever I can before my eyes pop out).

EDIT: Add Black Doves (Netflix thriller w/ Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw) to list above.

Black Doves was great. Just rewatched the past 2 days. And I agree about Lioness. Landmen as well is really good so far.

The Sticky on Amazon is worth a watch. About a maple syrup heist. Only 6 short episodes and a fun cameo from Jamie Lee Curtis as a mobster toward the end.

Also watched the final 2 episodes of Day of the Jackal last night. Really good.

I enjoyed Black Doves as well. The banter between characters was really well done and never felt slow because of it.

I watched Red One on Amazon last night. Santa Clause gets kidnapped, which leads to a Christmas action movie. Dwayne Johnson, Chris Evans, JK Simmons etc. It's not winning any Oscars but if you want a fun 2 hours you could do much worse.

The Agency seems more slowburn than those other two. I hear the French original The Bureau is really really good. Need to set aside some time for that one. 5 seasons.

First episode of the new Dexter was good. It's a new actor playing younger Dexter, but original Dexter still narrates as the voice in his head. Kinda the same Dexter stuff we've come to expect, if you're into that sort of thing.

I liked the new Dune series at first but it's gotten kinda boring imo. And I still don't understand why Dune takes place thousands of years in the future but there's little discernible technological advancement or even a futuristic aesthetic. Looking at the show, you think you're in the past instead of the future.

The Agency is ok, well acted and hopefully building toward something, but kinda slow and more about the main character's relationship with his gf than the actually Central Intelligence Agency.

I did enjoy Black Doves but maybe about 10% less than you guys haha.

Season 2 of Lioness was very good imo, better than season 1.

The new Star Wars show on Disney is geared to a younger/family demographic, but at the same time, 3 episodes in, it's the best Star Wars show on Disney in a while. Straight forward, fun, and actually reminiscent of Star Wars.

And I mentioned it before but Say Nothing (FX on Hulu) is excellent. A thriller about the IRA and Northern Ireland conflict. And Day of the Jackal (on Peacock in the US). I watch so much TV it all kinda mushes into the same show by the end of the month lol, but those two stood out.
