He also skipped the latest Nike Hoops summit. I also guarantee that he won't play in the NBA pre-draft combine too. He's a 2nd rounder, late 1st rounder if you're foolish enough to think he might actually be decent. Hilarious that you're thinking of taking him with a top 5 pick.

Nobody else entering the draft is playing in the Hoops Summit. Would they? He's already said he's definitely going to the Combine if the NBA deems him eligible for the draft.

What's hilarious is sleeping on the smart, hard working athletic 7'1 guy with a standing reach taller than Shaq's.

Are you his brother/agent? What qualifies you to say he's smart or hard working?

Against serious competition, he gets smoked. Look at his stats from the 2015 world championships a year ago-- 2 point, 10 rebounds, 1 block. We're not taking him with a top 5 pick -- no one is. He'll be lucky to go late lottery.

If you want to talk about him on the Celtics, think Dallas pick. The Brooklyn pick is just nonsense.

And Dragan Bender rides the pine in Israel. 10 rebounds in Israel? Not likely. But since DX has Bender ranked 3rd, I guess he's far and away the better prospect. So devoted to Draft Express are you that you laugh at the idea of Thon Maker being a top 5 pick. You have it all down to an exact science: Go to Draft Express, remember their current rankings, and laugh at the idea that they might be off at the moment.

And it's a safe thing to do, since nobody else will question DX or predict that the athletic 7'1" high school kid will shoot up the rankings.

Just like when everybody was SHOCKED!!! when they finally saw Porzingis on the court against NBA guys and they Finally realized how tall, mobile, and composed he was.

Just like everybody was SHOCKED when Aaron Gordon was drafted 4th when DX had him around 8th.

from what i've seen in the scouting videos, thon maker screams guy who would have a tough time scoring double digits against major college competition. hard working or not, he's not quite athletic enough or strong enough to match up against NBA caliber players. he has poor body control and not great fast twitch. he will be solid after a few years of development. but nothing about his tools says NBA superstar. i think late 1st is about right, maybe mid-1st because you can't teach 7-1.

I don't like Bender, but the guy put up historically elite statistics in FIBA u-18. Given that he's playing professional basketball, he's probably not the best comp for you to use.

And draft express sucks- you got me. Don't know why it's relative, but sure.

Porzingas went where he was projected. He was also a multi year professional. Not the best comp for Thon.

AG went in the range he was projected. A poster here with inside info said the Celtics were prepared to take him at 6 if he fell. But regardless, as stated, draft express sucks. And this has little to do with Thon Maker.

Thon Maker is a more raw version of Skal Labissierre. Skal will go late lottery, Thon will go after him. Thon is as ready for the NBA as Bruno Cabolco was two years ago.

When you say "World Championships" you mean Nike Hoops Summit, when Thon Maker started over Skal Labissiere, and in just 15 minutes grabbed 10 rebounds, leading all players in rebounds in a game that included every top prospect from Simmons to Ingram to Skal to Murray to Brown, on and on and on.

And Thon was a year younger than a lot of them, and played good/great defense if you watched the game.

Now Thon is a year older, 8 lbs stronger, with an even taller standing reach, but you're going to laugh at the idea of him being a top 5 pick. In a draft without any dominant centers. As if Thon Maker going 0-5 in an exhibition game a year ago means he couldn't possibly be the long, athletic defender/rebounder we're looking for.

But I bet you'd be excited if we took a shooting guard. Not because we need an upgrade, of course, but because that's what the mock drafts list as the 4-6 picks.

Yup, sounds like a good way to make decisions...

You're strictly thinking of him as a center. He would start out at PF and grow into a center, or just stay a PF. You're nuts if you don't think he's athletic enough.

Nerlens Noel was drafted while weighing 203 lbs. Thon is already 225 with plenty of room to get bigger. And with a standing reach 7.5" higher than the average NBA PF, that length obviously makes up for his temporary lack of strength.

You simply don't pass on an all star version of Amir Johnson because he's not strong enough to play center at 19 years old.

this thread (and its two forebearers) is just for salivating/prognosticating about where the picks end up. we need to keep it on-topic for the next twenty-four months!

YO seriously, get your little Thon Maker discussion the **** out of this thread. this thread is about pick positioning. people have been talking draft prospects in the draft threads (viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1433286&start=400) all season.

Oh man... Don't damn people for opinions you assume they have. I don't care about mock drafts, and only referenced them in response to you. This is literally the definition of a straw man argument.

For reference, our team needs a star. If we pick, it better be best player available. If it's not top two, I hope we trade it.

Pressing the button on tankathon is so much more fun this year compared to 2 years ago when we were 6 or whatever. Get 1 or 2 50% of the time it seems

How far could we move up with Dallas+Our pick, both best and worst coin flip scenarios

Parts of Bucks board are pretty high on trading back with us. They're currently slotted in 8-10 tie.

12 or 13. Perfect spot to nab Luwawu.

MU's been wank these last 3 seasons and will unfortunately finish above us in 2 out of 3 so I will have to go with the Lakers.

Big one tomorrow! Pretty nervous. (love how football has multiple fronts to play in and I'm still 100% engaged despite nothing to play for in the league)

Really hope BKN gets that 3rd slot all to themselves, if for no other reason that I don't have to hear people complaining that we lost to them twice eternally.

Pool/Dortmund though.

Sorry bruh.

He seems like an Ainge player great defense and improving with the jumper plus the great athleticism.

Unreal. Nothing about athletic 7'1 9'5.5" standing reach says NBA superstar?

How many 7'1 guys are there? Only DeAndre Jordan, Gobert, Porzingis, and perhaps a couple others have his standing reach. And he's quick off the ground. AND on top of all that he can guard in space a lot better than DeAndre Jordan, Whiteside, and most other guys with that kind of length.

Thon Maker's basement is Tyson Chandler, Marcus Camby is very realistic, and his upside is 2008 KGarnett.

Thon Maker has only been playing basketball since 2011, when he was like 13. To not be able to see his offensive potential because of how he looked one year ago playing against the very best players in his age group is very shortsighted.

Just wait until he gets a chance to workout against Bender, Poeltl, and anybody else he gets to work out against. I doubt Ben Simmons accepts the challenge.

Compare him to Willie Cauley Stein or Nerlens Noel, and suddenly you can see what I'm talking about with Maker. Maker is a more talented, taller, still growing version of those guys.

Return to Boston Celtics
