bisme37 wrote:First episode of the new Dexter was good. It's a new actor playing younger Dexter, but original Dexter still narrates as the voice in his head. Kinda the same Dexter stuff we've come to expect, if you're into that sort of thing.

I liked the new Dune series at first but it's gotten kinda boring imo. And I still don't understand why Dune takes place thousands of years in the future but there's little discernible technological advancement or even a futuristic aesthetic. Looking at the show, you think you're in the past instead of the future.

The Agency is ok, well acted and hopefully building toward something, but kinda slow and more about the main character's relationship with his gf than the actually Central Intelligence Agency.

I did enjoy Black Doves but maybe about 10% less than you guys haha.

Season 2 of Lioness has been very good imo, better than season 1.

The new Star Wars show on Disney is geared to a younger/family demographic, but at the same time, 3 episodes in, it's the best Star Wars show on Disney in a while. Straight forward, fun, and actually reminiscent of Star Wars.

And I mentioned it before but Say Nothing (FX on Hulu) is excellent. A thriller about the IRA and Northern Ireland conflict. And Day of the Jackal (on Peacock in the US). I watch so much TV it all kinda mushes into the same show by the end of the month lol, but those two stood out.

I only had one slight issue with the writing on a particular interesting growing backstory:

Spoiler:
I think it would've played better if Neal had either kicked her out of the house, asked for a separation or divorce because he was tired of her job coming before them. That would've been a good cliffhanger for the end of the season I think.

Final episode of Yellowstone was awesome. Sad to see the show end, but Taylor Sheridan is plenty busy.

I am kind of a half-assed Yellowstone fan if I'm being honest, but I do love me some Beth and quite enjoyed her big scene in the finale.

I found an under the radar thriller last night. Paris Has Fallen.

It's a French show but many British characters and mostly in English. Lots of action, the main villain (Sean Harris) is really good, and I'm enjoying it. Ritu Arya is in it, who I like in Umbrella Academy. I'm not to the end yet but good show so far. It's on Hulu in the US, and probably on something else in other countries.

Currently watching this Danish miniseries called Families Like Ours because Jeremy Strong of Succession recommended it. It's about the mass evacuation of Denmark 'cause it's gonna be submerged in water soon and how it affects the population. Essentially a pre-apocalyptic (?) family drama. It's more subdued and less thrilling than the 2015 Norwegian disaster film The Wave.

And my brother, who is not Jeremy Strong, recommended this Korean series Lightshop Keeper on Disney+. Gonna check that out next.

EDIT: Instead of empathizing with them and feeling sorry for their plight, I got bored with their family towards the end. Not the writers' or actors' fault. I'm just a dick who lost patience lol.

Got to watch 1992 too. It's an Italian revenge murder mystery/thriller on Netflix. There are sequels -- 1993 and 1994 -- but aren't available on Netflix. My tagline for 1992 -- if you're into arson and people burning alive, this is the show for you!

Anyone see La Palma yet? Nice short series you can binge in an evening about a family surviving an ecological disaster, much like The Impossible. Takes a few liberties with realism but otherwise an enjoyable watch.

Started watching La Maquina, another collaboration between Gabriel Gael Garcia and Diego Luna about an aging boxer trying to get back to his former glory and his sketchy manager who's caught in seedy dealings with what I presume is the Mexican mob. Also stars Eiza Gonzales.❤️ Just six episodes on Hulu.

Also saw buckners' reco above La Palma on Netflix, which was decent and a quick watch.

EDIT: LOL Stephen A. Smith with a quick cameo in the La Maquina finale. Skippable mini-series. Onto Squid Game 2.

Like Slow Horses, Bad Sisters on Apple remains one of the best shows out there. Unpopular opinion, but they may have just topped their already superb 1st season.

Slightly disappointed with Squid Game 2. Shock factor in S1 was hard to match.

"Juror #2" is prime Clint Eastwood. The guy is still an upper-echelon director even at 94. If you like legal thrillers with more dialogue than action, then this one's for you.

12 Angry Men is one of my favorite courtroom dramas. This takes that story and just kinda turns it on its side. Reall well done. Hoult has built himself an extensive dynamic filmography and this is a great addition to it.

Agreed. One cool tidbit: This movie reunites Hoult with Toni Collette after 22 years ("About a Boy," where he played her son).

SAS Rogue Heroes back, baby! Early new year gift. Fun show.

Also watched The Count of Monte Cristo with Sam Claflin (and an episode of Jeremy Irons). It's really good especially if you haven't seen any of the thousand previous adaptations.

I didn't know either series existed.

Both are from incredibly good books. Rogue Heroes was written by my favorite nonfiction writer, Ben Macintyre. I must have read 10 of his books so far, and all of them are just great. If anyone is looking for something to read, Ben Macintyre is the man.

I read The Count of Monte Cristo 8 or 9 years ago. For me, it's the best novel of all time.

Every other dramatized version of Monte Cristo that I've seen strays painfully from the plot, although the 1960's British TV series was decent. In fairness, it's not possible to cram 1462 pages of writing into a two hour movie.

I'll watch these if we ever subscribe to their respective streaming services.

There was a film adaptation of the count of Monte Cristo that came out this year in France (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt26446278/) and was one of the biggest commercial success of the last decade. I personally haven't watched it but everybody I know that has seen it, says it's the best adaptation of the novel on screen and they do a good job of not chopping out too much material despite having only three hour of run time to play with. Maybe worth checking out ?

Yep but nothing new to offer.

All-star British cast though. They got the who's who in British TV.
