Houston is going to possibly have to overpay to make something happen within the next 40 hours or they are in bad shape. They have already given up Asik/Lin and traded away a pick to gain cap room.
Unless the Rockets had an actual promise to Parsons as a favor of his agent bringing in Howard, letting him out of his contract was foolish.
Why bad shape? They are in bad shape in signing an All Star in FA but they can simply resign Parsons with his Bird Rights, they don't have to move anyone to simply match the offer.
They still have the NO pick, Capela, Motiejuanas and some smaller bits to deal off if they want. That's not a great haul but they could get a decent starter for that if they want.
I always thought they'd go after Chalmers as back court depth, wouldn't surprise me if they made him an offer.
I should have explained myself further... They are in bad shape for a team that went into this off-season with a very realistic goal of becoming a championship team next season. At first I think they wanted Lebron/Bosh/Carmelo and now their fan base is talking about Carlos Boozer....
The clock is ticking on Dwight Howard. He is going to be 29 next December. Howard is not going to be a player that ages as well as a more skilled center/big such as Bosh since Howard is mostly about athleticism and not extremely tall. (This is more relatively speaking since Howard in his prime was a better player than Bosh) Howard's strength will still be there for a long time but his jumping/explosiveness won't be. So realistically the Rockets may just have 3 more seasons in which Howard can play a huge role and if this upcoming season they get worse that is not good at all.
Parson's basically has close to zero value in my estimation signed at 15 million a year. He is not a truly elite shooter like Klay T. I would be upset at Ainge if he traded for a Parson's making 15 million a year. Even Rocket fans admit its a very questionable value that only made sense if they signed a star first.
The Rockets did get a nice asset for Asik but they are giving up an asset to get rid of Lin.
At the end of the day losing Asik and Lin really hurts the depth of their team and they needed a star or at least a couple of very high level role players to make that up and get better.
Yeah they looked poised to have a third straight home run offseason and now this offseason's turning pretty pedestrian pretty quickly. The good fortune of these last couple years turned around on them this year. And I know what you are saying with Parsons, though I think it's a bit on the harsh side. He might not be the best deal dollar for dollar but he still would provide production that they need to compete. They will have a $70M payroll and getting production from about all of it, him included. But I think it's fair to assume what you are saying is the extra value a team needs to come out on top isn't coming from his deal, if that makes sense.
