OK, I have to ask this - Why toilet paper? I understand masks and hand sanitizer. I personally bought extra Zicam and Advil for the cruise I just got back from. But why toilet paper? How much do you need to ride this out for two weeks? or a month? Why is this such a big concern?

I bought toilet paper at Aldi last night while getting my groceries because we were almost out. There was plenty but Florida is not ramped up on the virus yet. I didn't buy anything extra.

Because people think they're going to be quarantined for weeks on end. I guess. It's pretty ridiculous that I can't even go to Walgreens to find bottled water or toilet paper at this rate.

Where are you guys? We’re waiting any day now for it to hit Maine. I work at a hospital up here and we’ve been preparing for it. Fully expecting major chances very soon.

My wife's hospital is in Brooklyn. New York is getting hit pretty hard right now, so it was bound to happen eventually.

Marty Walsh has probably wanted to get rid of that yearly headache for a couple of years. This is a good excuse to do so. Look, just wash your hands and stop buying an abundance of toilet paper and water. Everyone that doesn't have a shot immune system will be fine.

That being said if someone is willing to pay me 100k to contract the virus I'm all in.

It's seemingly somewhat worse than the flu, but not so much worse that it's incomparable. The real problem isn't really that it's especially deadly to any one person (it can be to elderly or those with preexisting health issues but most people will survive) to the extent that it would lead to apocalyptic levels of death and destruction, but that it's a new disease that spreads very quickly, so unlike with the flu we have no built up immunity and no vaccine, and as a result there's this huge threat that the number of people needing medical care will spike all around the same time. In Italy, there literally aren't enough hospital beds and ventilators and doctors to handle the surge of patients. We are probably not that far from experiencing the same.

I expect most people will catch this at some point, but it's important that we spread it out as much as possible. Avoid catching it until as late as possible so there's no risk you will need to be one of the hospitalized patients during the peak of the surge, both to protect yourself and to reduce the strain on our health care system. Ideally avoid catching it until after they produce a vaccine! Flatten the peak. That's all.

So is Nike on the case, designing hazmat uniforms for the players?

Damn hoping the best for you guys! We were more or less told we might be on unpaid leave if we contact it outside of work and don’t want to use PTO/sick team. Great..

Using sick time for it does sound reasonable, does it not?

If they don’t have the sick time, you don’t want them to come to work because they need the money.

Best to you too! My wife is a pediatrics resident right now, so if she ends up quarantined, ACGME will probably still have her make up that time, which is super annoying. Her hospital has banned staff from travel. They are now in the process of setting up protocols for ensuring the virus is less likely to pass between staff and there should always be healthy workers available at any given time. My wife used to be an epidemiology researcher before med school, so because of her specialized knowledge, she's been involved in some of the planning.

Thank you! Well they are lucky to have your wife there! Hope they can get it under control over there.

I’m in IT and leadership is putting together computers to be dedicated for managing it once we have to deal with it. Should be sooner rather than later I’d guess.

Just because you aren't worried about getting it yourself, you can still very easily infect others who are in a more vulnerable population. You must have parents or grandparents, possibly with pre-existing conditions. And as others have said (including myself), the real danger isn't the individual cases, but what happens when such a huge population is infected, ~20% needing hospitalization, and the healthcare system is overburdened to the point where they can't treat everyone. All of a sudden a 1-2% mortality rates starts to increase. This isn't hypothetical, it's happening right now in Italy and it's going to happen here.

I don't mean to sound condescending but I hope you take some time to educate yourself a little more on this because it's not just the flu.

Well put. I'm 43 and in good health and not at all worried about myself or my kid or my wife though she is a little older than me, but I want people to take this seriously because my 85 year old grandparents are still kickin, sharp, and living independently, my father has hypertension, I have a good friend and neighbor who is in his 60's who has a serious lung issue, and on and on. For them this is serious, it's not just the threat of a nasty illness it's the threat of death, and it's up to all of us to be conscienstious and help limit the spread of this virus and minimize the damage for everyone, not just put our heads up our asses because it's not a threat directly to us.

WHO has officially declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. Doesn't change much logistically, but we're now moving from containment to mitigation, since it's clear it can't be contained. Hopefully this wakes a few people up.

I’ll chime in here as well. 70+ cases in Massachusetts came from one meeting for Biogen employees that took place in the city. The flu does not spread like that. Is it any more dangerous than the flu? That’s to be determined. However, it most certainly is one of the most contagious strains of a virus to be out in a very long time.

I went to a Chinese buffet yesterday and I was practically the only one there. It's like people don't want to get the virus.
