I completely get why people will miss Smart. Brogdon was clearly off the table because he has health issues though. Stevens had to make a change because Tatum, Brown and Smart were never going to get it done.

Good luck to Smart. I am sure he will do well in Memphis.

With his style of play, his body was about to breakdown at some point and we started to see just that this past year. His leadership, defensive toughness and his desire for wanting to win will be sorely missed. As a fan, it will be hard not seeing you in green come game day. You'll always be a Celtic, Marcus, and thanks for all the memories. Tough day to be a Celtic fan regardless if you're a fan of this trade or not.

I don't agree with that. Tatum and Brown as Starters, and Smart as Super 6th-Man can do it.
Smart just shouldn't be the Permanent Starting PG. He was Better being our Super-Backup.

Gonna miss Smart quite a bit. This stings but at the same time...

Smart has always been the "emotional leader" and "heartbeat" of the team. But the team's biggest problem has been inconsistency and Smart has been a main part of that. I think it will pay dividends that the team's heartbeat is not so irregular so to speak.

Smart helped to create this Celtics culture that has seen impressive development in players like Rozier, Brown, Grant etc. and a string of improbable deep playoff runs. I would have liked to see him end his career in Boston in an Udonis Hashemite sort of way TBH but NBA is a business and this deal was good business. Smart was the best of the 3 guards but White/Brogdon replace him well enough that there won’t be a big drop off and Porzingas can bring something this team has never had - a scoring big.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

I do agree he should be coming off the bench but that was clearly not going to happen. For better of worse Boston's big three was Smart, JT and Tatum.

This group has been to the ECF 4 times and the finals once. Not sure what other proof we need that this core was never going to get it done.

We'll need Horford to really step it up as a leader.
It really concerms me how this team will face tough moments when you have introverts like Tatum and White, weird Brown and selfish players like Porz and Brodgon. That's a recipe for disaster when it comes to team chemistry. Smart was the glue sticking everything together.
Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

My instant overreaction was the brief thought that the Celtic would never win another basketball game lol. He's been such a huge part of everything we do.

But as it turns out, 76 NBA teams have won a title without Marcus Smart and no team has won a title with Marcus Smart. So clearly there's a way to be a good team without him. Gonna miss him a lot but I think it was time for a change.

glad to see him leave but people saying White is better and will easily replace him are laughable. White is nowhere near the impactful defender Smart is. There's tiers separating them. White can't stay in front of his man half the time and he can't defend 1-5 like Smart often does. There'll be a massive downgrade on defense going from Smart to White. Where White WILL be as good if not an outright improvement in on offense. White, nor Smart, are starting caliber point guards. But we don't run our offense through point guards anyway so it's a moot point. I for one would rather have passes swung to an open White than Smart. Offensively we'll be an elite unit. Maybe the best since the 80s Bird teams.

Porzingis plus Horford getting older means we can't play switch everything anyway. We gonna be doing a lot of drop with Porzingis and Rob.

Celtics, Marcus Smart era: 437 RS wins, 63 playoff wins, 9 straight playoff appearances, 5 ECF appearances, 1 Finals appearance

Celtics, post-Smart era: 0 wins, 0 titles

I’ll check again in a month, but I have a feeling this will not change.

Hate the trade, traded heart of the team for a injury riddled big with no heart. Marcus will always be a Celtic. Celtics will regret this trade worse than the Perkins trade

Probably yes. Smart averaged about 8apg the first 2.5 months of last season, then dropped to 4 or so as the offense became more Jay-centric.

Smart *could* distribute and be a “true” PG but I think Brad just indicated he’s comfortable playing through the stars instead. Include Brogdon in that — it’s a lot of iso scoring — they’ll need to grow individually and mesh collectively.

I just don’t get this move. Brad preaches quick decision making on offense. We lose grit, defence and passing with this move. Totally against what was lacking last playoffs.
Is KP getting extended? Seems like too much for a rental. If so, aren’t we going to be as stuffed as PHX in a couple of years time cap wise??
KP hasn’t played with elite wings like the Js. Will be very interesting on offense.
Anything but a ring will make this trade look bad.

I'm rooting for Marcus to win his ring with Memphis, because the Celtics certainly aren't winning one if they keep Brown.

This is what I think as well. They traded the wrong guy. Maybe JB didn't have enough of a value as an expiring for Brad to pull the trigger. Really hope to be proven wrong cos I want banners on banners for Boston. It's just hard to win at the highest level with the way our #2 sees (or not sees) the game and the way he plays. Now we're going to compound that by limiting our ability to add depth on the roster cos he's due a gazillion dollars.
