Right. He’s crazy. But not crazy enough to overpay Smart. No GM is.

Bulpett just said the team is still willing to pay him in the Exum range, so 10-12 a year. Don't know if you'd qualify that as overpaying, but seems fair to me.

I’ll believe it when I see it. But yea.. 10 mil a year seems fair.

I love Smart, as everyone knows. But his agent has to tell him to take a 3/33 or 4/40 type of deal and be happy.

His agent screwed up royally for turning down what Bulpett insinuated was a 4/48 or 4/52 type of deal before the season.

The problem is 3/33 or 4/40 is not there from any team including the Celtics

I think the question is whether Smart’s pre-draft status and draft position have left him with enough upside to justify giving him Exum money or Nurkic money. Both those players have flashed major talent, Exum as a potential superstar and Nurkic as a dominant rim protector and rebounder. Smart has been a consistently excellent defender, but he’s never shown the passing or scoring potential of Exum, and Nurkic has been inconsistent but has shown flashes in multiple aspects of the game. Smart is defense and intangibles - he’s working hard, and in theory he could still become an all-star, but his offensive game has been, frankly, a disappointment relative to his original level of hype.

The best comparison for Smart would be MKG, who got 13 million a year, but in a different market, and at age 21 - Smart is 24 - and that contract isn’t bad but was probably a mistake. We also have Kyrie, Rozier, and Jaylen to play the 1 and 2.

I think 10 million would be generous, and the team equivalent of a player taking a “hometown discount” - giving him a bonus for his value to the team.

2 years, 18 million, 3 years, 21 million, or 1 year, 12 million, with the next two years as team options, an opt out into restricted free agency, something to give us flexibility to deal the bigger money if a trade comes along..

If I were the Kings, I'd use my remaining cap space to sign Clint Capela to an offer sheet. Houston prob matches - but that's part of the point.

Capela is probably a futile exercise. If you really have intentions of landing a player, you go after that player first.

Somebody may punish the Rockets soon, but I'm pretty sure they are matching a max offer. They are probably hoping to reach a deal ,at a slightly lesser value, before somebody pulls that trigger.

Why? They got WCS, Giles and Bagley, why sign Capela to a contract and what if the Rockets don't/can't match :D

Are you a Rockets fan man? Rockets have limited front court depth and are not prepared to lose Capela. So, make them pay up. Worst case, you end up with a good young Center under contract.

They could backload a two year deal...

Blah, don't care about that situation to be honest with cha. I mean they lost Ariza to that super weird Suns deal, they'll have a tough time staying healthy and competing with the Warriors.

Kind of feel like the Bulls only matched LaVine because they got him in the Butler trade and felt they had to, which is really stupid. Worst contract of the offseason. And here I thought the Magic overpaid for Aaron Gordon. That contract looks okay now.

Greg Monroe had such a good end to the regular season last year. Dude was dropping 18/10 on the regular, taking minutes away from Baynes and at times being superior to Al Horford offensively. Can't believe how awful he was in the playoffs and how much it killed his value. If he played in the offs like he did to end the regular season, we probably make the finals and he is looking at a nice juicy pay check right now.

Another empty stats guy who can't play a lick of defense. Not surprised no one's picked him up yet. Not surprised either that he was benched when it mattered.

Smart is worth about 6-8 million on the open market, and both other teams and Ainge know it. This is why Marcus hasn't gotten any offers from other teams. 35% shooting for the year, defensive specialist, and a restricted free agent is worth about 7 mil if he's really good at his specialty.

Then explain why Clint Capela, widely considered one of the best bigs in the league, hasn't gotten offers from any other teams.

One of the main reasons why a lot of teams don't mess with RFAs is because the incumbent team almost always matches, so you are essentially tying up cap space when you could be out making offers to other players.
