which is why last year's draft is so disastrous because Danny passed on several wings with length who can handle the ball, like Bazley, Doumbouya, Clarke, Bol, Roby, and Claxton who can switch and would have complimented Brown and Tatum perfectly. Given our cap, and dreadful bench, we cannot have a repeat of last year's draft and hope to contend going forward. We don't have a roster crunch. There's no excuse not to use all three 1st round picks to upgrade what we have on our bench and to replace FA losses. But Danny's hubris makes him think we DO have a roster crunch. So I fully expect him to trade or draft and stash at least 2 of the three picks. And it wouldn't surprise me if he traded back from #14 into the 20s if he's able to pick up a future 1st. It's almost a guarantee that Danny will pass on high ceiling players because he's done this every draft he's had multiple first rounders in. He's a terrible drafter. Just awful. Yes, most G.M.s are. But that doesn't absolve him.
We have a chance to draft at least two future starters and at minimum three upgrades to what we currently have on our bench. Anything less will be a failure and jeopardize our future. If Danny drafts like he has throughout his career in this year's draft, Tatum's career will mirror Pierce, in that, he'll be facing 30 y/o with no chance at competing barring a former Ainge teammate gifting him an MVP candidate. Tatum deserves better. I'd rather he left and won than not win a championship in his whole career in Boston.
This is a pretty harsh assessment of a roster that's largely built around drafted players.
Personally, I'm still not too high on Doumbouya or Bazley. They've shown flashes for sure but I'm more lamenting Herro (who they clearly wanted), Clarke, and Okeke (I expect him to be an exciting player).
But all things told, DAs assembled a pretty balanced, young roster that at the very least is VERY exciting to watch.
If RWill and Langford become players, you really have a solid batch of picks.

I guess I just view GM-ing differently. It's super easy to play Monday morning quarterback. You won't get any argument from me on the Brandon Clarke pick. I wanted him. But missing out on role players doesn't bother me too much. You can find competent role players anywhere, either in the draft or in free agency on the cheap if you build the right core. That's the trick. We are 3 wins away from the ECF with the most inexperienced team in the league. Yes we have 7 rookies that didn't contribute anything. I'm more concerned if any can make a jump in Year 2. Because we have a Core 4. the rest are complementary role players. Hayward will be back next year and/or he gets moved for complementary role players. We can sign at least 1 role player on the cheap this offseason. So that means we need really just ONE of those rookies to turn into something. I look at those rookies like rolls of the dice. I don't care how many we miss one. Just hit ONE. And that hit can come in Year 2 or 3 and it still counts. It still counts if we trade 1 or 2 of those guys and they become a player who in return fits into our rotation. THAT still counts. Just hit one.

Now we already have Langford who has shown great flashes on defense, so if Danny has faith in his development, i wonder if he's strongly considering a score first ball handler. Either way, at 14 we should def have options.
For a 3-4, someone like Vassel looks REALLY tempting if he's there. That kid is long, plays great defense, has shown improvement on his offensive game, and has a nice, high release point on his shot. For a ball handler, Cole Anthony could be an interesting prospect, as well. Volume scorer, high motor, but is he too inefficient? Injury issues? Tyrese Maxey checks all the boxes but that low release point is very concerning. I'd stay away from anyone with wonky shooting mechanics. They don't seem to translate way into the league.
From what I've seen in mocks Vassel is either going to slide 5 or so spots, or Danny would need to trade up. I hadn't really considered him but now so intrigued and just watched some videos but he looks tempting indeed. If he DID slide to 14, that would be the 3-D wing/Hayward replacement pick, and that leaves - for me - one of the other picks for back up point (Maledon?) and the other pick is a stash.
I think this really could be a year for Danny to try to move up a bit. Usually he won't give up enough (please, no Justice reminders here) but packaging a later pick with #14 might work this year. For one thing, a lot of owners may shy away from the larger guaranteed rookie contracts when the lottery is so unpredictable. So teams that have been out of the bubble and not getting that revenue may let those higher picks go for some lower 1st or 2nds and cash. There's going to be some deals to be had, and some good finds left near the end of the first round; that's my prediction this year.

Yes, I was so psyched that we were going get BOTH Doumbouya and Clarke, but:

I had Hachimura, Doumbouya, Herro, Clarke at 14, in that order of preference, and at 22 Clarke or Williams.
So I was disappointed in the Langford pick, but more because Doumbouya was there than Herro as gone.
But it's still early days. Grant is one of those consummate "stat-defying" players. His advanced metrics indicate a bigger influence than his raw scoring and rebounding. Smart guy, I think those who think he won't improve much will think again.
Romeo it is hard to tell. Yeah, the defense has been good, but the team has needed a sharp shooter at times off the bench and he's not even at the shooting range yet. He may still turn out to be a good pick, but the team needs someone more ready. So this year's draft might see Romeo taking a seat further back in the rotation.

Oh I agree. You have to stay big picture when you assess a GM. You can't simply assess the job performance of a GM based on one or two draft picks where they didn't take YOUR guy.
But I'll still lament it when it happens because I wanted to selfishly see them play here.
That said, I'm generally pretty positive on the job Dannys done. I felt like he made some mistakes in the KG/PP era which may have cost us a Title, and I think he's wasted some picks over the years.
But KG and Tatum have been genius moves and it's kept me highly entertained as a Cs fan over the past couple decades.
On recent picks, I think Herro has all-star potential. Definitely wish we had figured out how to get him but Langford could certainly deliver down the road here. He's got lots of ability. I can even see him making some plays in a playoff game because Brad will play anybody if the situation seems right to him.
As far as 2020, I'm seeing big things out of #14 because I think there's gonna be several prospects available there for us to add to an already top tier roster.

Agree with the entirety of this post. To be clear, there is nothing wrong with being critical of the job Danny has done. There's nothing wrong with stating missteps or mistakes that have been made either. I only have an issue when people do it seemingly with little to no context at all. People who clearly pull up historical drafts on nbadraft.net so they can identify all of the players who became stars after our picks just to prove a point. It's obvious. It's lazy. And it's silly.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Thread
I'm trying to use the term "ball handler" the way I think Stevens does.
So ball handlers on the current team who've gotten non-trivial playing time include everybody who's ever been called a PG, plus Hayward. (The "non-trivial" clause is in there so that we don't have to label Carsen Edwards's almost non-existent role.)
Classic ball-handler tasks include:
-- Bringing the ball upcourt under any circumstances -- i.e., not just in high-speed transition, but also after an opponent's make or whatever.
-- Starting the half-court offense even when the action isn't specifically for you.
-- Re-setting/re-starting the half-court offense when needed.
-- Executing plays that start with you but involve a high likelihood that you'll need to pass the ball.
And only a very low fraction of your passes should be simple bail-outs from failed plays; usually, you should be passing with positive intent.

*But for me, I believe the single most important Position in Today's NBA is a solid wing player.. a 2-3 or even a 3-4.. A wing player is suited to be athletic enough to switch on a smaller faster guard, while being tall/long enough to recover on Bigs.. EVERYTHING todays is based on taking advantage of matchups created by PNRs..
So based on that theory, I want Boston to draft any of these players at 14.. not necessary in order.
Pat Williams (3-4) a strongly built switch everything player who can probably guard 2-5 on switches.
Devin Vassell (2-3) the perfect 3-D prospect.. Someone who doesn't need the ball a lot ut make other pay for trapping tatum/Brown/Kemba
Nesmith (2-3) best shooter and good defender.. Probably the biggest make up payer of this class.
- - - - - - - -- - - - slighty less
Saddiq Bey. (3-4) maybe the most ready to step in player who can also shoot and defend..
I imagine anyone of these players playing along side Tatum/Brown at the same time if Hayward is gone or coming in for any of those 3 if GH stays another year..
Boston would still have great switch-ability defense with the perfect compliment of GO-TO scorers and role players..
I am a bit confused by what you mean at ball handler. Do you mean a PG? I know Kemba is small, but I love Smart when he plays backup PG because of his size and switch-ability.
* As I have already expressed, I love Wings. they can play and defend multiple positions. I want a wing because there is such a BIG drop off when Tatum and/or Brown goes out.. Hayward may or may not be there long. Semi isn't good and Romeo Langford looks like a talented 18 year old who will still need a year or learning the NBA game.
who do you have in mind as a "bigger ball handler" ?
Banned temporarily for, among other sins, being "Extremely Deviant".

definitely want Tatum here forever. But I also hated the picks DA did last season.. I was screaming for the perfect fit in B Clarke and we passed him twice!! Grant Williams plays the glue role, BUT I hate 6'6 PFs. I see him as not more ceiling left other than better shooting..
I was also screaming for Bol Bol over Carsen Edwards. While I love Edwards shooting potential, he reminds me of a one trick PONY who won't ever get much of a chance to play In Boston.. Romeo langford, as I have already stated just looks so RAW.. maybe one day, but I also believe in more ready shooters.. Boston needs at least 1 more solid role player/future starter with this draft at minimum..
2 things need to go.. my lack of spell check and Joe..

Thankfully this has virtually no chance to happen. You can bet on it not happening. Carey isn't even in the wheelhouse of guys that Brad and Danny like for their system.
Not saying you’re wrong, just want to point out that it worked out really well the last time we took a very technically proficient “limited athleticism” guy from Duke.
I don’t know how Danny “knew” on Tatum. When will the story of that be written?
Carey isn't very technically proficient. He's just bigger than most of the NCAA centers, while the smaller court and college's players inability to shoot hide his awfully defensively.
Back to the basket centers are absolete. Embiid got swept, Jokic needed Murray to get on fire, AD needed to join LeBron, Towns has hasn't made the playoffs alone not one time.
The perfect center is Bam Adebayo, and to a lesser degree, Theis and Nerlens Noel.
Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Thread
Bolmaro is a nice stash option. He currently can't shoot, but has nice playmaking and ball-handling at his size, which allows him to throw some bonehead passes you'd never expect. Don't know if players can be stashed more than one year?
I agree with the poster above that he won't be seeing too much gametime. Barcelona is stacked this year (even without the promises of Gasol and Vesely) and Euroleague as a hole isn't kind on playing youngsters, though maybe he is given a Barça B roster spot with continuous callups from the first team.
Nikola Milutinov was drafted by the Spurs a few years back and has never come over.
And for the discussion going on three pages back, yeah, trading up is usually a horrible idea unless you are sure the player you will snag is really really good.
I'd only trade up to #7 with Detroit if Hayes was there. Otherwise, big pass.
As buck clearly pointed out, the value of a draft pick is not only their contributions but also their salary. Wasting a #7 pick on a guy who will bust or at the very least not contribute until his second contract is negative value, while getting a shooter at #26 who can at least do that right away is quite nice value, specially for teams like Boston ready to compete now.
(do we really need another Langford? I know the Celtics tactic of bringing guys in slowly has worked (Brown, Rozier, Smart) instead of throwing them into the fire, but Langford could have improved way more if we had the possibility to give him multiple chances to work it out, like bottom-feeding teams can.
Our first window with Kemba-Hayward is RIGHT NOW, while the second one is with Smart-Tatum-Brown all in their primes, and then I'm confident Danny will pull some magic to bring Mitchell or Bam over haha).

Robert Horry is better than MJ, because everybody knows that 7>6.

What do you think of Okongwu?

Sure, but I got 73 trade options to get up high enough to grab him.

I want us to draft Xavier Tilman with our 30th pick. Feel like he would be a a perfect five for Stevens.
With the 26th pick I think Bolmaro, Tre Jones, Dotson, Ramsey or McDaniels would be good options.

this seems like the perfect draft for ainge to hoodwink his way into the top 10 and select a star. My 3 favorite prospects for boston would be hayes, vassell, or okongwu.
Second round sleeper multi faceted bigs worth taking a look @ : Daniel oturu, Xavier Tillman (mentioned a lot itt), Paul Reed, Isaiah Stewart, Zeke Nnaji, Vernon Carey jr. You can get a really good rotation big out of the 2nd round here imo.

I have only watched highlight videos of Oturo did not watch him in like games, but he seems like exactly the type of big we need, mobile, can block shots and spread the floor. Scouts says he need to gain strength but he has a truly elite rebounding rate which is one thing we know transaltes, he shot 36% from 3 and over 70 % from the line which means he will eventually be a real threat from 3 if he works. He put up 28 and 11 vs Jalen Smith when they played maryland the question with him and almost all Bigs is does he have the footspeed to gaurd the pick and roll away from the rim. As a later pick IE 26 30 or 2nd round I would be cool with him

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Thread
For me, what we're looking at, at 14 is a bunch of serviceable role players, except for one guy who has a much higher ceiling that might be there, and that's Achiuwa. Guy's got some star potential in my eyes, and frankly, I think he'll probably be gone a couple of picks before us, but he's the guy I want with our first pick. If I had to throw in a later first to move up a couple of spots to get him, I'd still do it. We can't keep 3 picks anyway.

Re: 2020 NBA Draft Thread
I think Vassell and Saddiq Bey are very similar players. I expect Vassell to be gone by 14 th pick, but with Bey being a year older, he may still be around. If we pass on him, we will regret it more than missing on Clarke. This guy is 6'8 (Tatum like) but 216, so a bit heavier than Tatum. He shot .451 from 3, and .77 from the foul line. I'm telling you guys, this guy is our bench scorer next season, and would fit in great with Smart, Langford, and the William's boys as our second unit.
If we can't get Bey, then we need to get Aaron Nesmith. Put in 7+ 3 pt shots, 3 times last season. 52% from 3 and 82% FT. We need shooting off the bench. One of these guys, Bey (first choice, better defender) or Nesmith is our answer. Can you imagine, having a 45 -50% 3 pt shooter on the floor with Tatum, Brown, Smart, and Williams ? If we are looking for Hayward replacements, one of these two guys is it. Bank on it.
We could then get the best PG remaining with the 26th pick. Tankathon has the best feature of Mannion and Maledon is their draft age, then it makes me want Tre Jones, and he should be available. I would love to pick up Terry or Lewis, but not at the expense of missing out on Bet or Nesmith. Point Guard runs in Tre's blood. (Tyrus is his brother) Give him 3 years with Kemba and Smart, and we will have our point guard of the future. I don't believe that Waters will ever be a starter and will most likely a 3rd team point in this league due to his height. 2nd team is really pushing it. I was hoping to see some IT in his game, and there is some, but he doesn't shoot it as well.
