Simons is a shot maker and we don’t have a ton of those on this team right now. Negative defensive player but we have enough solid defenders to cover for him.

This move makes me think we might be doing more roster remodelling than I thought.

Eh. I could see it but probably not. Still a long term need for guys on value deals like him. And with Jrue gone they need some more PG play/ball handling/playmaking, especially since point forward Tatum is out. Pritchard is more of a PG than Simons.
But… he’s definitely more expendable now than he was before since Simons does profile kind of similarly. If someone knocked their socks off with an offer, they have to listen.
Yeah, I'm looking at this the other way. I think Brad just swapped one tradeable piece for another tradeable piece. I still see us going into next year with PP and White starting. Some other team could use a scoring G on an expiring. Maybe the next move saves them another 4M or so for some team willing to trade and then extend him. I don't see us extending this guy as talented as he is.

Why? Salary dumping Jrue or KP was the minimum....Simons is expiring.....There definitely could be more, but doesn't this set us up pretty well to do nothing?

I'm with you. I think we got him to trade him. And maybe before training camp.

I think we're going to see changes to the bigs on the roster too. Plus more salary offloading (one way or another). And I wouldn't get attached to Simons.
Again - I'm not positive but this might be a wild next two weeks.

Yuck, no. PP is the much better player.
And I still expect Sammy to go.

Okay, I don't think that's an unreasonable expectation, but you said "This move makes me think....". What is it about this move that makes the case for lots of turnover stronger?

I was wondering the same thing - why did the blazers pay out 2nds to trade away an expiring deal for a long term Jrue deal? What am I missing?
Simons is bad. That's what you're missing.
I know he is an empty stats player, but he is expiring. Literally, if he never plays a game for us and we eat his contract, its still a better financial outcome than holding Jrue's deal (not really considering on court production for this argument - we arent competing next season)

Does this make the reunion with Lonnie Walker less or more likely?

Certainly possible. POR should have been talking to whatever team takes Simmons, if traded.

Has to be 1for1 or 1for0 if they do send Simmons out, right?

Same for me. Those are basically the options, Hauser for no $ and a pick still doesn’t get you under the 2nd. You’d still need KP to bring back less or move someone else too. Will get very interesting.

No matter if Simons is a long term piece or gone by training camp, either way, getting a $28 million dollar player on an expiring and two seconds is an improvement on Jrue being owed $32, $35, and $37 million over the next three years as far as our financial flexibility. No shade at Jrue either, but this is just financial to a large degree

Fundamentally I expected a legitimate big back in return for Jrue.
I don't think we can go into next year with our current big rotation. They're old, frail, a solid backup, and a barely playable backup to the backup. Very little athleticism. Which means we need to send something of real value to get a big or two onto the roster - that makes me wonder if the White/JB stuff is realer than I thought.
Similarly, I wouldn't be shocked if ALL of KP, Al and Luke are gone. We really need to remodel the frontcourt.

Still the big unknown. I support both directions. Glad a move was already made. Hopefully all figured out in the next couple of days. We’ll know after draft night.

Simons is what the doctor ordered.
If we want to beat OKC, we're going to need a guy with incredible shot making ability and Simons is one of them

I think a KP and Hauser to ATL for Mann and Niang gets you super close if you flip Niang to a 3rd team with a TPE like SAC or DET. Going off memory, though, but it saves another $22Mish.
