White’s NBA career has flourished since his World Cup experience, and certainly since he joined the Celtics, for whom he is a critical piece as a staunch perimeter defender who can knock down 3s. Few outside of Popovich, and perhaps longtime USA general manager Sean Ford, knew much about White’s potential at the time he was promoted to the national team five years ago.

“That was my first time really getting to know him,” said Celtics star Jayson Tatum, who was on that World Cup team in 2019, is of course teammates with White in Boston and once again on Team USA. “We were in the same draft class but I didn’t know him much and that’s a testament to him — how hard he works. I dunno if anybody saw that he would get to where he is now, but he deserves all the credit. He’s a hell of a guy, hell of a teammate.”

White said he had not discussed a potential role with Kerr, but White is widely expected to provide depth and insurance at guard. He and fellow Celtic Jrue Holiday, who is also on Team USA, form the best defensive tandem at guard in the NBA; if the situation calls for it, they could do that at the Olympics. For now, though, the Americans have plenty of good defenders who are also prolific scorers. One injury, or perhaps one heater on offense by an opponent, could change that.

Since DWhite was drafted...

Gap's gotten bigger since he was traded to the Celtics. And in last 3 seasons (RS+PS), he's the only non-center in the top 20 in blocks. He has more blocks than Giannis and KD.

I thought it was an acronym for a type of lap dance at first then I saw White on top and didn’t know he had that dawg in him.

Wow, what a great support system Derrick has:

Billups - has been a mentor for Derrick, since they're both from Colorado and played at Colorado University.

Mazzulla - Derrick has said in interviews how much he loves playing for Joe and how much Joe has been supportive and encouraging of him to reach the level he has reached as a player

Pop - his coach in San Antonio..he coached him there, developed him and they stay in touch

Father, Richard - I'm sure we all follow Richard on twitter and see how positive and supportive he is of his son

Between all of these guys helping him and encouraging him and his work ethic, it's not wonder he has become such an awesome player who just keeps on getting better

“He used to go to my camps, then he started working my camps and now it’s his camp,” said Billups in a conversation with Heavy Sports.

In fact, White recently put off joining the USA squad a bit after getting the call to replace Kawhi Leonard just so he could complete his duties with the kids at said camp.

So it wasn't just some newish camp he started when he got rich.

Jordan Walsh has his basketball camp open this offseason in his hometown Dallas.

My very first Buffalo jersey arrived in the mail today, along with my Champions Tee and Cap.

Took a bit of a while (ordered them over 2 months ago from the UK) but I am just thrilled.
