Gallo + Noel >>> Melo + Ibaka, if we're letting go of cap space. Might cost less.

I like Melo as a player way more than I like Melo's on-court persona. I'm not sure how he'd fit on the C's, but the idea of pairing IT and Melo at the end of games is inviting. Add a rebounder without giving up the BRK picks and Brown? Sounds good to me if it could happen. We'd still be a notch below Cleve/GS, but much closer striking distance while still building for the future.

In a Melo trade, would the acquiring club also inherit the same contractual terms? In other words, would there be a trade kicker again if later one the Celtics were to trade him?

I definitely agree and don't particularly love that deal (nor hate it, tbh). I just think that, if we trade for Melo, cap space no longer matters and the size of Ibakas next deal is irrelevant.

Purely theoretical but...

Melo is up in two years. If Ibaka's deal extends beyond that window, the size of it is very important.

Valid counter.

If we could sync up Horford (who has a player option in 2.5 years), Melo and one last guy, that would be ideal. Would give us a ton of cap space for the summer of 2019.

Then maybe we make the rumored Jae for Ibaka deal.

I've got the bigger issue if that had to be the next shoe to drop. IMO, more likely Ibaka will be an albatross contract than someone who will be worth it.

Ibaka's contract will be worst than Horford's( most ppl here consider Al's contract bad)...

Melo would work okay in our system, but Steven A Smith is pulling ish out of his a. According to a NY writer(too lazy to find it) he hates Boston although it's one of the teams that he fits the best. Who knows tho. And oh- it would definitely take Amir + more to get him here(I wouldn't trade a BKN pick including Brown for Melo in a million years)
Good assessment:

Given the asset cost, I'd rather have Melo than Gallo for the next two years. Ibaka vs Noel is a better debate and good counter by you. I'd prefer Noel and his long term fit with our team for sure.

Melo for any combination of bos future first picks, Mem 19 and lac 19. No Brooklyn picks and brown!

Than get in 3 way with mia/orl and get vucevic.

IT
Bradley
Melo
Crowder
Horford

... question becomes whether that team can compete with

Kyrie
JR
Bron
Love
TT

... if not then why bother.

I can see the reasoning not to hurt the long term future as to why not to improve now.

But if they can improve now and still keep the important parts for the future, why wouldn't they try to improve now?

I dunno, Melo does absolutely nothing for me. To tie up our cap room for him even if we could get him for spare parts seems like a waste to me. Just get us a couple stop gap bigs and let's finish out this bridge year

Because we add a top 3 pick after this year and a likely lotto pick after that. That's enough talent/ trade bait to get that last player to move the needle.

I don't get why he's starting at pf. Pitting him up against the western bigs isn't a good way for a 19 year old to get acclimated to the league. Should have him coming off the bench playing 20-24mpg & working against bench players as of now.

That said i do like him.

Who should we have picked? I'm very happy with Brown.

Man it takes years before we can really judge these guys though. Even the 2014 class is just getting into their own. Patience.

Well Melo is going to cost something. It's going to be some combination of assets. Plus he's on the books for next season. If he's not enough to get us past Cleveland or Toronto, then I don't see the point. I'm not saying he isn't, just explaining my train of thought. Melo isn't a piece you acquire for the future. He pretty much has a 2 year window here.

And who is that player? We've been talking about "this player" for 3 years now. Most likely we are going to draft that player and Melo will be long gone by then.

Maybe for a crappy pick. His advanced stats are pretty bad and I don't think he really fits into our style of play. But we could use a big and he is on a cheap deal.

It's a bit of a tough call. I still have hope the guy can be a force, but, I can't know his work ethic and drive. He fits the same style of play that Amir currently provides. If they pick him up, they are resigning themselves to either get rid of Amir or basically have more minutes of Amir style play (i.e. no stretch threat). Zizic is coming over next year and he is almost certainly tabbed to replace Amir.

Now Nurkic is not completely a newbie as a 3 point shooter. He was successful in juniors play during a 5 game tournament shooting, a tiny 15 shot sample size, he hit 7. He's had very sporatic attempts beyond that, but reportedly was doing a good deal of work on it during his rehab. Of course he has not tried any in game since returning.

http://basketball.realgm.com/player/Jusuf-Nurkic/Summary/32965#International

If they kick the tires, I'd offer the Clippers 1st rounder and 2nd rounders for him. Would be willing to send Mickey too since he is in the same boat in terms of offensive fit and they don't seem too focused on developing his "stretchability." But, as you said, do they see the offensive fit? We could certainly use the reliability on the boards element at least.

I think that's fair

We all know IF Danny gets Melo he'd work to keep all of IT, Horford and Melo here long term. Add a guard like Fultz or Ball to mix and we look really really good.

I'm not a fan of Melo...and I doubt we get him, but this Crowder > Melo stuff is silly. Melo would be a great add to this team.

On the Melo thing -

The theory would be something like this:

-Nothing on the free agent market looks like it will bear fruit in 2017/18 so using that cap space is more palatable
-Melo could be had without sacrificing premium assets
-Melo move would be followed or paired with adding a rim protector/rebounder of some sort
-Adding Melo is a short term cost burden that, should LBJ get hurt, give Boston a chance to make the Finals in the near-term
-Boston would still add high-end young talent over the next two years
-That young talent would be developed and flipped for another star as Horford/Melo fade over time. OR that young talent would be the core of the next generation of the team.

If Ainge can work it that the Celtics get Melo and keep IT, AB, Crowder, Horford, Brown, Smart and both Brooklyn picks then fine I willing to give it a shot.

If the Celtics have to give up one of the assets I mentioned then let Melo rot in New York. Celtics have all the leverage in this situation.

Amir, Zeller, Jerebko, Rozier, Boston 2018 1st to New York for Melo and O' Quinn

I suppose that's how I've started looking at it, as a shorter window with the current team to bridge to the next iteration of whoever makes it from the Smart/Brown/BRK picks group.

So as long as they come out of that second group with a real foundation, they might as well try to give this current group a fighter's chance.

Who knows though maybe they do still end up pushing all the chips in, just seems less likely at this point.
