Re: Ainge Retires - Stevens to Front Office - Celtics search for New Head Coach
Wonder if something like this was always a long term option when they hired Brad. Ainge had to be thinking about retiring down the line. I've heard that he really values the time he spent coaching so it is conceivable that he might look for a coach who would eventually make a good GM. Get a bunch of season under his belt, rebuild the team and then step into the GM role hopefully at the point when the team would be ready for a real closer as a coach- either someone who has won titles before or an ex player.
I'd be surprised if Brad or Danny were surprised or upset by any of this. (well they may be upset a bit the way anyone is when they retire or change jobs)

Sounds like Ainge values coaches with experience. He won’t be picking the coach but still interesting. Sam Cassell has basically been associate head coach for 5+ years now and I think would be ready. I like Chauncey too but this is his first year as an assistant

Another thing from the presser, may not be fact but it's what was said, Danny and Brad have been talking about this scenario for years. They even said Danny told Brad when he hired him IIRC. Wyc and others were the only ones who didn't know. Wyc seemed a little salty because he thought it was his idea for Brad to put his bid in but Brad and Danny were planning it for a while.

I don't think there's any risk of Larranaga being the pick.

Listen to Danny's interview on 98.5 this morning and it sounds like Brad wasn't on the list of suggestions Danny gave to Wyc that he said he could see Wyc wasn't too excited about. Then he explains that it was Wyc and Brad who got to Brad.

Rondo is not done as a player yet right? I doubt they'd hire him anyways, but I'd love it. But he still has a few years left in the tank as a player right?

The best Rondo would get is an assistant coaching job right now if he hung it up after this year

It would be a huge gamble. He'd really be the opposite of Brads cool and collected style. The timing just isn't right right now but I do think he will be a top NBA coach for somebody at some point.

Both of us are old enough to handle the consequences of our posting haha. I will say this, though. He's 100% right that a league full of predominantly black players are taking note of all of this. It's going to have consequences and already has. We were a white front office with white owners and a white head coach, all trying to dictate the careers of mostly black players. Anyone who thinks we are going to hire another white GM and white coach isn't paying any attention at all.
Absolutely, I like and almost always agree with truth, I just hate the relentless indiscriminate attacks on the board. Focused ones are great.

Thanks!
Really can't trust snake oil salesmen, they spend their lives figuring out how to say exactly what they think we want to hear instead of just telling us the truth. Next time they will say God came down to tell us Brad is the chosen one.

Yesterday I said Chauncey would be my number one option.
Then when I heard Brad talking, he said he would hire a coach that he can work really close with.
Going off that, I think there is a good chance our next coach will be a Celtic assistant and former assistant.
One person that keeps coming up and a person they have high respect for and who they think has a great basketball mind is....
Kara Lawson. I’m thinking he has a chance to be the new coach and I get the feeling she will be great.

Is there anything that would indicate that Billups couldn't be that guy?? just asking. because Billups still remains my top option.

Cassell, Billups, Pierce and Atkinson are my choices.

welp, I'll admit my guy James Posey hasn't gained any traction yet.
darkhorse candidate! Get on board now!
Also I liked Adrian Griffin's Rookie-of-the-Month with us back in the day.

Ainge suggested it would be difficult to get Kara to leave Duke after one year and after a great recruiting class she brought in.
I originally also thought Kara would be a great candidate but seems like she’s not leaving Duke

Not a big Goodman fan but agree with him here about Lawson and lack of experience. I personally want Cassel” or Chauncey

Him or Austin Ainge would make me re-think being a fan.

Hope he doesn't follow Ainge's style of drafting undersized players.
His “style” wasn’t to draft undersized players. He took what he saw as value picks. Guys who would have went higher had they fit the NBA mold better. Often that part of the mold they didn’t fit was size. So he wasn’t targeting small guys, they just happen to most often occupy the space where he was looking.
I hope Brad drafts for high ceiling instead of high floor. That’s my gripe with DA’s drafting.
Exactly!
Whether he targeted undersized players or not, in the end he still ended up drafting undersized players.
That's why I said hopefully Brad will be different from Ainge.
