Re: Trade Post-Mortem 2017: Eight is Enough
You don't go after a player because they may cost less than said player. ie like saying the Celtics should go after Paul George rather than Lebron, because he is going to cost less to acquire. That's is not how/ it should work. You after a player because
1 They are talented
2 Fit your system. More so 1 than 2.
Paul George is just a better player than Jimmy Butler and Gordon Hayward. Celtics shouldn't pass up on acquiring him because he is going to cost more.
The players the Celtics should be targeting this offseason are Kevin Durant(If he opts out) Paul George. Demarcus Cousins or Blake Griffin. Get any of those two players and the Celtics turn into championship contenders instantly.

Meh. At the end of the day all 3 guys are tier 2 stars that don't move the needle much if you gut the team around them. It's why Ainge didn't deal for them during the deadline. If you have three tier 2 stars, separated by small percentage points, in most cases personal preference is the only thing that actually stands between the 3, all 3 guys get you to the same exact ceiling yet one comes for free and allows you to keep your trade pieces and a better overall roster, you take him everyday of the week. That's basic stuff.
Cousins is gone man. Griffin is super injury prone, Durant is 100% staying. PG is up for grabs but he needs to tie the knot with us before we pull the trigger. This LA situation has too much smoke around it to not be taken very seriously.

Unless Paul George isn't interested in contending for a championship in his 20's...this upcoming lottery will be huge since if LA doesn't finish in the top 3, LA won't have their own picks in both 2017 and 2019. If they finish in the top 1-3 of the lottery, they keep their pick this year and keep their pick in 2019 and only lose their 2018 pick. And are probably in position to dump a bad contract while still getting a good prospect in this years draft.
Assuming the Lakers lose their pick this year.....if I am George even if I grew up a Lakers fan, I am very willing to accept a trade to Boston and sign an extension as long as the Pacers are very reasonable in trade discussions.
What is reasonable in this specific situation where George holds most of the cards? #2 pick and filler for PG is actually a good offer under these circumstances. #1 pick is actually very generous considering George's age and his injury history.
If I am George I say the only reason I am willing to entertain trades this off-season and contemplate signing an extension is if that team is projected to be immediately great -- better than Cavs -- and not just a fringe contender, otherwise I am willing to wait 12 months to make up my mind on what to do then..... The Celtics are not a "short window" team like the Cavs sort of thought they were after the Lebron acquisition and Boston doesn't have to trade for George to get much better. And I could be wrong on this analysis but I sort of believe Ball/Jackson since they are older/more polished are a bit more ready contribute to winning as NBA rookies than Wiggins. (I actually can't make the same argument for Fultz despite Fultz arguably posting the best freshman stats of those 4 players).
George holds the better cards in his hands if Indiana can't offer him the super max this off season and if his agent and George plays their hand correctly, he can be walking into a title contender next year with the Celtics 2nd best team in the NBA.
If George publicly indicates he may be walking in 12 months and only wants to lets say play for Golden State or Boston or San Antonio, Indiana probably has to accept the #4 pick straight up since that is the best rebuilding offer they will probably get. I don't think George will kill his legacy in Indiana and be that harsh/combative but he may decide to strike a balance and say I want the team acquiring me to pay a modest discount and NOT any sort of premium.
The Celtics missed out on having George in this years playoffs and what the Celtics potentially offer for him should reflect that.

Re: Trade Post-Mortem 2017: Eight is Enough
Posted this on trade board. What do you guys think?
The more I think about it, the more I feel Celtics should go all in on KP.
Forget about PG and Jimmy.
You have your core, you have your superstar/leader in IT. Porzingis will be a perfect compliment, he doesn't need a ball, IT can still be a primary handler. Is a good defender (with top-tier potential). Yeah, the only need he doesn't solve.. Rebounding. IT, Bradly, Crowder, KP, Horford.. That team will get crushed on boards.. But imagine the spacing..![]()
I know Boston is now in kind of a tear.. You want team to remain competitive, get better, but you still want to stay young and add some youth from the draft. And Kristaps is perfect for that. You get a young player with a superstar potential, who, you know for sure, can contribute now.
You don't have to think, how to play are your guards. Do you let IT go.. Play fultz/ball of the bench.
I mean, the price will probably be both pick at least. But you never know.. There were reports NY really loves Fultz.. And noone knows whats on Phil`s mind.. Perhaps he really took it too personally with KP skipping exit meeting and talking **** about organization and how its been run. (I doubt it, though)

How was it received?
I'd be into it but only at the price of the Brooklyn '17 and more minor parts. Depends on where it lands obviously.

If the Celtics could acquire him and sign Hayward, I'd be ecstatic. An IT/AB/Hayward/KP/Horford lineup is pretty much Stevens' wet dream.
Could some combination of BKN17/BKN18/Crowder get it done?

I'm not interested in Zinger at the price that the Knicks are going to want. Just too darn expensive right now for a player that still has some serious flaws

Ugh. Assuming the BK17 is the #1 pick, that and Crowder is more than enough.

While this is right to some degree, you have to think long term too. Using that same guideline, if you think the player we draft will end up a better player than George, then you don't trade the pick. So if we can get Hayward (or any other free agent you listed) for cap space, that's the deal to make.

Re: Trade Post-Mortem 2017: Eight is Enough
I trade the #1 pick & Jae for KP right now if it's an option. Adding a cost effective player at a position of weakness while maintaining cap space for Hayward; to me, that's a no -brainer.
Thomas / Rozier
Bradley / Smart
Hayward / Brown
Porzingis
Horford / Zizic
edit: just realized, in this scenario, if we remove the cap hold for this year's pick & Crowder, we probably have enough to fit Olynyk's cap hold in to this team as well. Might have to add Rozier to the deal but I would do that, no doubt.

Hence me using the word 'combination' as opposed to 'all of'.

Yeah, but BK18 + BK17 is a combination I'm not ok with. BK17 OR BK18 + Crowder would be fine.

If Clips blow it up, might DeAndre Jordan be available? He is under contract for 17-18 and 18-19 at $22.6M and $24.1M respectively. Are the free throws a show-stopper? If C's could bag Hayward, making Crowder expendable, would Crowder and next year's Nets pick plus cap filler get it done for DAJ? Throw in Rozier if they draft a guard? Ainge could trade the Clip's 2019 1st-rounder back to them as part of the deal too.

Jordan is seriously flawed player. Waste of 1/5th of your cap space. He's bound to get hacked at any point in the game and lose you points. Even when he catches ball under the rim, he gets fouled hard and sent to the FT line often. Can't pass, shoot. Most of his offense is generated by Paul and those are just open dunks most of the time. He's trash in the post. 20million for that? *** no! If you need some toughness, rebounds and defense for few minutes then there are much cheaper options. O'Quinn, Dedmond, McGee gives you the same for much cheaper.

Only way DJ comes available is if Doc resigns or is fired. Which, honestly, is what Ballmer should do at this point. DJ would be an absolute monster for the Celtics, and we have the picks/young players that would allow a depleted Clips to rebuild.

We need rebounds, shot blocker, rim protector and some nasty....this is DeAndre Jordan.
Who cares if most of his offense are dunks ? It's still 2 points. With the passing abilities of IT and Horford, he is excellent fit.

Rebounding and shot blocking with weak offense is not worth a max contract or near max. That's the issue really. Heck Zizic might give us some of that by his second year if not his rookie year. DAJ doesn't move the needle much in the end. A wing who can score the ball in isolation and take pressure off IT and Horford is a much greater need for this team.
If you want rebounding and some nasty, it can be had for much cheaper.

Why do we need shot blocker and rebounder who can't play during crucial minutes for effin 20 million? The only player we need from Clippers is Griffin. Skilled big who will score, pass, rebound. When will people let this old school NBA fade into oblivion with their rebounders and rim protectors?
We need to simply improve our rebounding and Griffin does that. We don't need to fix one problem and create 3 others. Jordan will do that while Griffin will not make us worse in any way, only improve.
Just watch the replay of Jazz Clippers game 7. You would pull all your hair out of your head if it was Jordan on Celtics missing all those FTs during important game 7.
On Celtics Griffin would give you 10+ rebounds every night, elite playmaking with great handles, good floor spacing and ability to switch easily on smaller players. IT can do his thing without Jordan clogging the paint, ball movement even better and our offensive versatility only improves because Griffin can play not only away from the rim but also do some major damage in the post if needed.

That's pretty much beyond my actual point.
