Horford is 10x the player Thompson is on both ends and is a much better plug-and-play guy so I wouldn't even think about last season's double-big debacle and use that as a rationalization to avoid double-big lineups this season.

Defense is really the issue with Horford. I think a number of "stretch 4" types are too quick for him on the perimeter. (They were too quick for Thompson as well, but let the Kings discover that.) So do you have the Timelord out on the perimeter to defend those guys where he can't protect the rim nearly as well?

I could easily be sold on a Smart, Brown, Tatum, Horford, Timelord starting 5, in a double big lineup. But I don't know if they would be able to run like the team wants, so I just don't see it much. However, if that were the case, Horford will do fine on the perimeter, esp. with Timelord owning the paint and protecting the rim. All Horford has to do is steer them toward Timelord, and then pick up the man Timelord rotates off of to box him out of the rebound / put back after Timelord sends it out of there !!!!

In one hand of course I'd like to hear that horford is looking great. In the other hand I hope that lights off fire in Robert Williams either way.

No way do I want Horford to Start. He's 35, and doesn't need the wear and tear.
I'd be happy to have him come in with the 2nd Unit, and Start, if there's Injury.

What's more important is the minutes he gets during the season.

Starting will be fine as long as he doesn't get heavy minutes.

If Horford starts and only gets 24 minutes per game then that will be good for he and Rob Williams.

I think so too!

But he will not be getting lots of minutes.

Rob Williams is still the Celts' best Center right now.

They might just have Horford defend as a 5 and be the 4 on offense. Make Rob Williams a weakside shot blocker ala OKC Ibaka

I think we’ll start double bigs with horford and Williams though I expect limited time with both of them on the court. I don’t think there will be much issue on defense with that pairing. I honestly can’t think of many players who spend the majority of time at the 4 position who will prove a big issue for horford. He’s diminished as a switch defender vs smaller guards sure but I’m not worried about horford guarding Siakam and the like. My bigger worry with the double big lineup is offensively. Horford is a good to great offensive center (depending on his shooting) but he would be mediocre as a 4 offensively. Yes he’s a good passer and a decent shooter but he doesn’t have the necessary dynamism to me to fill that position fully.

That said I don’t expect much more then 5 min per half with both Williams and horford on the court together so it won’t be a huge concern either way. It also just fits in with the roster as a whole; we project to be a good to great defensive team and a decent to good offensive one.

I want the Cs to become like the Raptors from a couple of seasons ago when they were able to morph their defensive scheme mid-possession and multiple times a game regardless of who was on the floor. And I think we have the personnel and coach to do it. BTW, their double-big lineups with Gasol-Ibaka was in 100th percentile on defense. Neither are exactly agile to keep up with speedier 4s. Key for us is having great communication, right positioning, and onpoint help/rotations.

Lebron was NBA finals MVP at age 35. Chris Paul got his team to the nba finals last year at age 36. PJ Tucker started for the bucks championship team at age 36. Ariza started for the Heat last year at age 35. Lowry still a good starting PG at age 35. I could go on..

Last year at age 34, Al's numbers in many categories fall right in line with his career averages. I think as long as we keep his minutes under 30 a game he'll be fine.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

The other problem with Horford is that he may get traded to bring in the next White Whale.

Willing to bet Horford won't be moved until the summer at the earliest if at all. This season is all about competing at the highest level possible and getting the ducks in a row heading into the summer.

I agree after yesterday's comments, but I figured that was not the initial plan. I hope they still bring him off, but it's not like I'll be upset if he starts, I love Al!

Lol we have had a young team for too long if you guys think 35 is old and Horford can't start. Literally look at the Lakers starting 5 lol
