Barnes is not a max guy. I hope we don't blow our cap space on him. We need size more than anything.

I wonder if targeting restricted free agent Maurice Harkless is a more shrewd choice. He's only twenty-three.

Data Dimes: Why Harrison Barnes doesn't deserve a max contract

Postseason Houdini

Three-and-D?

Last summer, free agents boasting the coveted “three-and-D” skillset were hot commodities. That might actually be an understatement, as $231 million in salary was committed to just five players of that archetype: Khris Middleton, Danny Green, DeMarre Carroll, Iman Shumpert and Wesley Matthews.

It’s worth noting, however, that only one of those talents received a max deal: Matthews. His contract jumped to the max after DeAndre Jordan reneged on his agreement to join the Dallas Mavericks.

Of course, that contract was difficult to defend almost immediately. Not only was Matthews coming off a torn Achilles — a devastating injury for any athlete — but the shooting guard shot just 30.3% from beyond the arc in November. He recovered in December, but once again fell to 30.4% in January — inconsistency that plagued him throughout the year.
Barnes doesn’t have any such injury background to be wary of, but he’s also not close to the same defensive talent as the quintet of wings signed a year ago. In fact, Warriors opponents were superior offensively when Barnes was on the court.

Paltry PER

During the regular season, Barnes posted a 12.32 player efficiency rating. That ranked 236th out of 350 qualified players. His mark was worse than Cameron Payne, Lance Stephenson and Spencer Hawes, among others — not exactly hinting he’s worth top dollar on the open market.

Not surprisingly, Barnes’ PER was less than impressive compared to his Warrior teammates.

Forget the PER. Klay Thompson's PER was only 14 two years ago, and only 18 this year. The thing that bothers me even more than his crappy shooting, which may just be bad luck/timing, is that the ball sticks in his hand. If there's a play breaks down for GSW, it's almost always because the ball winds up in Barnes' hands and he needs 1-2 seconds to process the next move. This was a major problem for Jeff Green too, and frankly is a bit of a killer for me as I've watched him in the playoffs. You cannot pay a guy the max if you don't trust him as a playmaker, save for elite defense/rebounding centers.

I don't care if the guy shoots 10/10 tonight - he's still a bum. Going to be very disappointing if be ends up in Boston for anything over what Crowder/Bradley are getting paid

You won't see that type of contracts anymore get used to it.

How much money do you think he just cost himself? Or with the cap about to blow up, did it even make a difference?

[tweet]https://twitter.com/KevinOConnorNBA/status/744730129889370112[/tweet]Dude shouldn't be judged by his Finals performance alone, but either way, this guy isn't remotely worth the max. Role players should be paid like role players if you wish to build a proper contender. Give me Solomon Hill at half the price tag or Dudley at even less. Barnes is not the star we are looking for and waste our cap on. Someone will still pay him though. Let it not be us.

He's not worth max. But, he's worth something. He's an upgrade for us. I am OK with Barnes as long as that's not the only move.

I don't think he's a clear upgrade over Jae, who I still feel is on an upward trend, crowder brings it nightly and before than injury he was shooting the three at a really respectable clip

Don't know if it's been said here yet, but I'll go on record as gauranteeing Barnes to the Nets for the max

They'll have to beat the Lakers to get him.

So ideas like "$20 million per" and "Max contract" have been the focus on Barnes discussions for a while. Does anyone have a guess what he'll go for now after that Finals performance?

Just not on the Celtics.
