Those damn picks and the Celtics current talent is what is a heck of a lot more important than any damn coach. Players know it as well. If coaching was so important a rookie NBA coach wouldn't beat a 67 win Spurs team coached by Popovich.
If the C's land KD, IMHO primarily credit Ainge/Billy King/Nets owner/PP/KG.
I think for players the coach matters a lot simply because that's the guy who's going to be in your ear every day. It's not so much "great coach=title" as it is "this guy is gonna be my boss and I want to enjoy working under him." These guys are human just like the rest of us. Everyone wants to avoid working under a boss they don't get along with.
I'm not saying it's the deciding factor, but it's definitely more than just lip service.
I agree with you to a certain extent. As long as the coach is competent and not an ****hole I think any coach will suffice.
Stevens obviously passes the coaching test unless KD actually prefers someone like Popovich who is a bit more confrontational with at least some of his players.
The only time I think a coach matters a ton is if the player really likes him and has played for him before.
I just think star players recognize that they are the ones with the power. If KD signs a 1 +1 deal with Boston and he wants Brad Stevens fired and his high school coach hired instead, Wyc will send him walking the next day and higher an unknown coach if need be. This is the reality of the NBA. It really doesn't take a genius to realize play Lebron/KD et cetera.
