Nets really should trade Thad while his value is decent racking up numbers on a bad team. Won't be a FA draw, doesn't help their horrible perimeter play, and for all of his strong play there's nothing he can do to keep them out of the bottom 3-5.

Need Kobe and the Lakers to go on fire, only 3 games away from Brooklyn in the win column although I highly doubt they will ever catch them but still, you never know. Pick is looking good so far.

Nets are not going to just lay down for us and throw this season away. They're not that bad.

Fortunately there are 27 teams who are more not that bad than they are.

They've been healthy, playing to win, giving vets big minutes and have the third worst record in the league...

The trade deadline, injuries or a change in approach could even make them worse

Close games are the difference between poor toaverage teams or average to good. They are finding a way to lose most nights

The Nets will end up piling up Ws when other teams are just resting players or not really playing for anything, I think they win more than 25.

That sounds about right. That would mean they go 17-36 the rest of the way.

And if the standings are similar to last year, that would be safely a bottom five team. The 6th worst team won 29.

If everything goes right for them. If they lose Lopez, Thad or Joe to injury or if they make a deal before the deadline to try and add young talent by selling off a guy like Thad they are true bottom dwellers.

Honestly how often does everything go right for a team? Especially a team with the luck the Nets' have had. They're this bad while being totally healthy and playing their vets big minutes, their only hope is that they stay "this good" and other teams give up. But if anything goes wrong for them they are still screwed.

I'd be ecstatic if Boston nets a top 5 pick from this. People were saying the pick would be in the teens. That's an amazing result.

I had already written off any chance of sinking below the Lakers because they just look awful and it seems like this season is more about being a Kobe farewell tour and making sure the Sixers don't get their pick.

But I've got to say I think there is a bit of hope in that the Nets are what they are right now. There isn't really anyone on their roster who is going to surprise you or suddenly get really hot. RHJ is their only good developing player and he has a ways to go before he can contribute meaningfully. The Lakers on the other hand have Russell, Clarkson and Randle all of whom I think could take a big step this year and push them to a couple extra wins.

There is some chance there we could leapfrog them. Although unfortunately I think it's just as likely if not more that Portland, Phoenix and/or Minny all get worse and drop below the Nets.

If Joe goes down they will be better, he is turrible.
I think they are guaranteed bottom 5, but not sure about bottom 3.

For what it's worth, they will likely buy out Joe Johnson in February-- not sure if this helps or hurts us.

Who replaces Joe though? I mean yeah he's Charles Barkley turrible, but I don't think Karasev or RHJ are any better. Maybe Bogdan, but still they'd likely be just as bad not any better.

If it's more, I don't think it can or will be much more. The East will still be fighting for playoff spots and jockeying for position. The Nets finish with 18 of their last 26 on the road including a 9 game west-to-east swing featuring multiple b2bs. If not for that I'd agree a bit more about the late-season malaise. Bad timing for them. That said, you're right that they won't be sitting guys down for weeks with a popped zit or something. But if Brook's foot or back is sore? We'll see.

Except they finish with 18 of their last 26 on the road (where they are 2-12 currently).

I think it'll be close to a neutral move to be honest. Yes, they remove a player who has been TERRIBLE for 35 mpg. At the same time though, he's their secondary ballhandler and spends a whole bunch of his 35 a night as the primary ballhandler and they don't have anyone to replace that element. Basically leaves Jack and Larkin as the only guys you feel more or less safe with the ball in their hands on the perimeter. Young isn't that guy, Bogs and Ellington aren't that guy, RHJ is definitely not that guy.

Not to mention the fact that there are only 5 games separating 1st place and 10th place in the East. If the parity in the Eastern Conference holds up, teams will be jockeying for playoff position late in the season instead of tanking.

Why do you think they'll but out Joe? Isn't he expiring this season?
One day Marcus Smart will be defensive player of the year, mark my words.

Mark stein first put the idea in my head:

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/14284332/nba-5-5-brooklyn-nets-new-york-knicks-cleveland-cavaliers-new-orleans-pelicans

If he agrees to waive the 5M remaining or so off of his salary to go play on a contender, why would you keep him? For a team desperate to attract FA talent to Brooklyn, I'd imagine you'd also want to build up as much goodwill with players/agents as possible.

Yeah, I've been saying this since since the offseason. The NETS have to do what's best for the NETS now and in the future. The deal with Boston is done and nothing is going to change that. Managing the PR hit of a trade that happened 3 years ago today will set the franchise back even further.

It will be VERY interesting to see what they do at the deadline.
