Until last night, NBA teams had lost 1,014 consecutive games after trailing by 32 or more points. Key to breaking that streak was the play of cigar winner, Jayson Tatum. I see some awarded the cigar to Aaron Nesmith, who again played well, but come on! If Tatum doesn't get to smoke it after a record breaking night when he carried the team to victory... just no. Yes, the team was not playing well in the first half, and the Spurs were nailing their shots. It seemed likely that we were doomed to become team number 1,015 in the aforementioned streak. But they turned it around. In their efforts to make it into a respectable game, at least, they cranked up their effort, and closed the gap. Somewhere around 15 points down, they caught the faint whiff of blood in the water, and just went after it. As they continued to whittle down the lead, one had the sense that they could pull off a win, and wow, they did! Remarkable!

Ya don't start Fournier.

Riiiiight. Just "don't start Fournier" that's it, and we magically wouldn't have dug ourselves into a 32 point deficit. There's literally nothing else that the 32 point deficit can possibly be attributed to. He started Fournier. That's it.

LMAO.

Glad I come here for such hard hitting, in depth, thoughtful analysis.

Fournier started vs the hornets the other night and we went up by 20 in the 1st quarter of that game...

But how good would murray amd johnson look on this team.

Murray/pritchard
Smart/fournier
Brown/nesmith
Tatum/johnson
Timelord/thompson

We had like a couple of chances to pick Murray in 2016 but we chased Ante and Yabusele instead smh

Truth.
I haven’t missed a game since 2005-06 and the thought of something magical or special happening in a game is why I always tune in. Comebacks like this are one in a thousand but it always provides redemption for the bad you sometimes have to sit through. Never bail on them is the lesson.

tatum obviously wins it and nesmith gets the puff but i voted for tristan because he deserves a shout out. he was as intense as i've seen him in that second half. the great thing about tristan is, when things aren't going well, he gets angrier and plays harder, but still within himself. the kids need to learn from that. JB and smart play angrier and harder but they don't stay within themselves, instead try to force the issue. it's a good lesson for our young team to watch tristan's energy and focus when the chips are down.

I post on another sports board, and one of the posters works with and helped create some of the advanced stats. He says ignore most analysts ignore RPM since the guy who developed the formula left for the Mavs, and they changed how it’s calculated, which they won’t disclose how it is. He says ignore RAPTOR and PIE(nba.com’s advanced stat), that BPM is useful as a box score stat, and that LEBRON has graded out as the best so far this season. The formula uses PIPM and RAPM, which were my two favorite advanced stats coming into this season.

No advanced stat is perfect, they are all flawed, but this one seems like the least flawed of them. You can’t use them as an outright ranking system, but it’s a useful tool to measure how players impact the game.

A very underrated play in this game that helped ignite our comeback with by Thompson.

Towards end of 1st quarter (1st play of this video) he made a strong put-back, slamming the dunk home for an and-1.

That play, at the time didn't seem very significant. I mean, we were down by 25 at the time so I think most people saw that play and thought to themselves "who cares? we're getting killed and just because he made that dunk, there's no way in hell we're winning this game"

But, looking back at the game and how it unfolded, that play was huge. It gave the celtics hope. it gave them something to feel good about. It was a little something, something we could build off of.

And I loved Scal's reaction when TT made that play. Scal was pumped. The way Scal reacted on the air, that wasn't a "who cares? No way in hell we're winning this game" reaction...that was a "let's f%^$* go!!! It's been a terrible 1st quarter but there's a long way to go and this play could help get this team going" reaction.

Lost in the Tatum/Nesmith show last night was Fournier was starting to come around with his play and shot. So important to get Fournier back to strength and playing well before the playoffs.

Having Fournier and Nesmith as wings coming off the bench in the playoffs gives me great hope

Like Hal said above, Scal really thought this game was there for the taking even when we were down 20+.

I know he puts off some people, but I love Scal, and he can read a game at an elite level.

He and JB definitely have a Bird/McHale scoring duo thing going on this season. Since the rest of our roster blows chunks*, they could keep it going when it counts.

*not you, Rob Williams, Smart, and Nesmith

I really think that in a normal season, when there's no constant roster shuffling due to COVID protocols, this team would be a 3-seed at least. Tatum and Brown have taken another leap this season, but the relentless roster turnover has made it impossible for the whole team to gain any sort of chemistry or form an identity altogether. I'm really looking forward to next season when our breakout players (Time Lord, Pritchard, and Nesmith) and new additions (Fournier, maybe Jabari) get a full training camp under them and get more acclimated to playing in Brad's system. Once Tatum and Brown are no longer surrounded by greenhorns, that's when I think we'll really be considered a contender.

Tatum really scored 31 pts in the last 16 minutes to win the game. That's just dumb.

It’s the best game I’ve seen someone play since this, though different stakes obviously.

Tatum straight up refused to let them lose, he got to the rim AT WILL. Every single point was needed, and he made the right pass pretty much all night, super impressive.

Anyone see Deuce celebrating after the game after his dad’s great performance.

Deuce was dribbling the ball like Jaylen Brown though. But his only 2 or 3, he has time to improve his handles.

He finished April averaging 30/9/5 on a 62% TS. More importantly, the team went 11-5, with him out for one of those losses.

He scored more ppg in less games during that crazy run last February, but that was on unsustainable splits, shot 48% from three on 9 attempts a game. This April his splits were 48/41/88 on 8 threes a game, obviously that will correct somewhat, but those are pretty sustainable numbers for him when he commits to getting to the line.

I still can’t believe that it took until the 44 second mark in the first quarter for someone other than Tatum to score

Fitting that it was Tristan though, he was AWESOME last night. And as I said in the GT last night, I cannot state how much the team loves him.
