They would get much better offers elsewhere.
Gerad Wallace served no purpose for a rebuilding Celtics team, either. Sometimes teams eat bad contracts in these scenarios to get a greater return.
Still have to have a greater return than other teams and Hayward is a huge negative to a rebuilding Pelicans team.
All the rumors out there is the Pelicans are trying to unload Holiday, Moore and Mirotic so it makes no sense they would take Hayward.
If Danny says that he’ll only include both of the MEM/SAC picks in addition to Tatum if they take on Hayward, NO would be fools to reject the extra lottery pick.
The pelicans are trying to trade Holiday because he has value they can extract. Similarly, accepting Hayward is another way to extract value. Maybe the Celtics agree to trade 4 firsts to NO if they take Hayward instead of 2. They try to rehab his value and possibly recoup another pick by trading him when he’s expiring.
The Celtics accepting Gerald Wallace is why we got the pick swap that became Tatum. The Pelicans wont turn down a lottery pick to similarly accept Hayward in the deal.

This is the one positive of not being able to consummate a deal right now. We see how Hayward does over the next 30-50 games. We still have a lot of time for him to turn it around.

When that offer could occur leading up to the deadline is unknown. New Orleans general manager Dell Demps is "not picking up his phone," a source familiar with the situation told ESPN on Tuesday.
If that is true...
I wouldn't pick up my phone either. I have more leverage than any GM has probably had in NBA history. I can make the Lakers or some other team gut their team to acquire my player. I can wait until after the trade deadline and see who has the No 1 pick (Zion checks a lot of boxes transcendent talent, will put butts in seats). I can wait until the Celtics want to give me Tatum and whomever. I can even just say screw it AD, we're not trading you. Who knows AD might just be seeing if he can bluff his way to LA and if not, he'll just sign that record deal with the Pels.
No reason to rush anything.

I can't wait until next week. Trade deadline will be over. AD will still be a Pelican. And we get our young studs to destroy the Lakers, dispelling this myth that Ball, Kuzma, and Ingram are better than Tatum and Brown. Can't wait to hear what the Garden starts chanting.

Fortunately they would not:
Knox: 4.4
Noah: 6.4
AD: 27.1
KD: 38.2
8 cap holds: 8M
Total: 84.1M
Cap: 109M
Remaining space: 25.1M
Kyrie’s max: 32.7M
So lose Knox, too.
Still leaves them short by ~3M
Which is nothing, though.

PSA (every trade/FA/rumor season):
Rule of thumb when sorting through all the noise -- if the report is favorable to the Celtics, it is very much TRUE. Otherwise, it's utter crap.

You do this trade 100 times out of 100.
Would be a top 3-4 Celtic ever from the word go.
So you're putting AD over at least one and possibly both of Havlicek and Pierce? (As well as Cousy, Cowens, KG, McHale, Parish ...)
Not crazy, actually.
Without question.
KG the only one who makes me blink after Bird and Russell.

Look out for subtle signs. If he's wearing a green hat with a shamrock on it, we're in a good spot.

It could be helpful to us for this trade deadline if we hashed out the parameters of a couple of scenarios with New Orleans now..

Well, Lebrons high school jersey was green too. So let's not jump to conclusions here.

Bingo. The truthfulness of any report is directly proportional to the degree Celtics fans want it to be true.

My ONLY concern with him is when I think back to all the Celtics/Pelicans games over the years, it sure seems like every time the Celtics win....you look at the box score and say to yourself, "wow, Davis at 36/17...when did that happen?" Point I'm trying to make is that he's amazing. He's a stat stuffer.... but why does so much of that production go almost unnoticed?
I actually think if the Pelicans were in the East throughout Davis' tenure in NOLA, they'd be a Top 4 or 5 team every year and a threat to be in the Semi's and East Finals.
Why would it matter whether the casual fan particularly noticed his productivity in process? Seems like not focusing on flashy dunks etc. is a feature, not a bug.

Offer Tatum, Brown picks , fillers etc. Why would Hayward be desired or wanted, the guy is TOAST. I would be the first one to hang up on Danny if he played greedy with AD.
Pels would probably want all the picks we have, Tatum, maybe Marcus smart instead of Brown...
But for AD they ask, you give. SIMPLE AS THAT.
If he doesn’t want to resign obviously tell him to kick rocks but if he does intend to stay gut this team and get AD at all costs.
Ingram, Ball, Kuzma etc is a SOLID OFFER for Pels to consider. So not sure why Gordon Hayward is mentioned or Rozier etc.
Smart could be a great leader for a young rebuilding team, but I think your average small-market GM goes for Brown's flash and potential instead. And bunch of B+ young guys is not a solid offer for an A+++ player--especially knowing what Danny could offer during a higher-stakes summer bidding war.

Captain_Caveman wrote:I don’t see Rozier involved in an offer at all. Why is he agreeing to go to New Orleans unless he is being vastly overpaid? And why does New Orleans want that? Terry is going to want to see what his options are, and he is not a Day One free agent.
We are going to want to have an AD trade wrapped up in principle around draft night. That way, they can draft the guys they want with any picks we give them, and we enter free agency with AD already in tow. That lets us concentrate on resigning Kyrie, Horford, Morris, Baynes, and maybe Terry too. Way too much risk letting those guys hit the market with no AD in place.
I totally hate you right now.
I made the comment earlier about it hurting to lose Smart so I had almost convinced myself that NO might like to take Terry instead. I know you're not sentimental. I try not to be but I do like the kid. Also think Danny could try to give up Yabusele and keep Williams. Considering what else we'd be forking over Yabu provides more ballast while marginal right now but Williams holds more longterm potential.
Having said all that if we can at least keep Brown then I'm pretty much in agreement with where that leaves us:
Kyrie
Brown
Hayward
AD
Al
Bench: Baynes (P.O. he'd definitely exercise and would be back), Ojeleye (actually think he'd get a chance to come in out of the shadows) Williams
Resident capologists correct me but I think we'd have the MLE, the mini-MLE and vet plus any remaining draft picks to fill out the roster. I think we keep at least 1 draft pick this year. So...
draft pick BPA
possibly Morris returns
possibly Terry returns
vet pg (Wanamaker? Mack, Beverley)
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

I think the Lakers are going to offer the Pelicans a monster deal of Pope, Ball, Kuzma, Hart, Zubac, 2019 1st round pick and 2021 1st round pick for Davis, Payton and Jackson. I think the Pelicans probably take it. Davis wants to go to LA. Deal done by Tuesday.
The whole purpose of bringing in Lebron is for a trade like this one. Lakers will overspend.
Just my prediction. Flame away.

Smart has to be in the deal to make the money work. There’s no other way unless they take Hayward on
