Re: Joe Mazzulla Thread, Head Coach
Mazzulla has a full offseason to integrate Holiday and Tillman even more. Something he didn't have last year. Also to fully prep for KP's absence.

Re: Joe Mazzulla Thread, Head Coach
This is all predicated on us not completely falling flat on our faces as we defend the title this season (which I don't expect at all), but damnit I love Joe now. Not talking x and o's as a coach or any of that, but just from a mentality stand point he is starting to drive other fanbases crazy and doesn't duck anything. Our guys need that kind of confidence and teams are often a reflection of their coach. He's not cocky, but he's not afraid of the moment either.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge. I can't wait to see how hard it's gonna be. I can't wait. I wish we started tomorrow. That's as easy an answer as I can give you. I hope it's even 10 times harder than it was last year. I really hope that it is."
I don't think it's a bit. He really is Psycho Joe.

Being new to the public light it was hard to know at first if he was just all soundbytes or if he really meant this crazy stuff. The Town became a bit almost and we all made fun of him for it, but really looking back on it that's just more of this same intensity Psycho Joe stuff. He's not perfect, but he also realizes the game changes all the time and sounds willing to change with it. Intensity and preparation leading to success don't change though and that seems to be his non-negotiable. I'm all on board with that.

When I found out he was a serious lip-taper I knew he was a certifiable whack job who would do anything.
If you can get a total psycho you've got to just roll with that until it's clear he can't get the job done.

Re: Joe Mazzulla Thread, Head Coach
NBA.com's Q&A w/ Mazzulla: https://www.nba.com/news/the-qa-joe-mazzulla-celtics-offseason-repeat-hopes
NBA.com: How has life changed with the championship?
Joe Mazzulla: It really hasn’t. I think that’s the key to understanding what your place in the world is. There are always things that can be better and things that can be worse. At the end of the day you just have a responsibility to your family and to the Celtics. You just try to do what you can to make it better.
Obviously, the external has changed. People around you, how they view you. But that’s not as important. That’s the challenge and that’s the goal, to stick to the things that are most important to you.
I saw an answer you gave when asked recently about your team having a “target on its back now” in which you said, “I hope it’s right on our forehead, in between our eyes.” You also took issue with the phrase “defending a title” because it wasn’t aggressive. What’s up with that?
Right, if the target’s on your back, you can’t see your opponent and you don’t know where the attack is coming from. If you’re facing your opponent, you have an idea where he is.
But the goal is to win every single year. So the idea of “back-to-back” is null and void, because every team has the same goal — to win. But it’s about the process that leads to winning. Who are we if we’re not coming into every season trying to achieve the best possible season that we can have? So regardless of the circumstances, our goal is no different than it was last year: Stick to the process of winning and get better every single day.

Re: Joe Mazzulla Thread, Head Coach
The coach with the highest winning percentage in NBA history isn't a top 10 active coach. I'll file that take with "Derrick White isn't a top 100 player". I'm sure it'll age just as well.

Just within Joe's group, he should be ahead of the 3 guys above him even by the writer's own criteria. Thibs overplays his vets and underplays his youth (a knock mentioned in the preface of the rankings) and generally runs boring offenses that especially get tougher to find success in the playoffs because, as the writer mentions, he lacks versatility. Coach Bud is mentioned earlier in the article for his coaching tree where regular season success doesn't lead into playoff success so why is he then given the free pass? His teams also don't give up the right kind of shots on defense (another mention early in the article) Ime... umm he's got 2 years where he was great defensively in Boston but offense struggled in the playoffs (especially the Finals), fired abruptly for misconduct and that should be taken into account, and then missed the play-in.
Joe, on the other hand, has developed young players (Sam, PP, even Jays into that same as their games have expanded) and doesn't over rely on his vets, his offense was historic, his defense has a good blend and mix for what they are and aren't willing to give up, and both offense and defense have been reworked almost completely since Ime left, so you can't just say he's inheriting Ime's work. He handles ego's, and like Thibs his players seem to love him and would run through a brick wall for him. Yes, he's got a ridiculous roster, but he didn't just squeak by with that great roster either as the team dominated in regular season and playoffs.
I'm not putting him into the HOF, but for a 2024/25 coaching rank he should be at least 8th and that's before I even read the top 7 lol
