Though I have listened to podcast interviews of Celtic scouts in the past they simply make long term dossiers on everyone in the ballpark of what they look for so it’s meaningful but also not in a specific sense if that makes sense.

On the other hand Hal any idea if they worked this guy out last year? Curious because of some of the comments Scheierman made about some pretty specific direction it sounded like he got after his draft workout the year before last.

Actually yes, I just checked and we DID have Cliff in for a workout ahead of the 2023 draft.

Others we worked out before that draft (but they returned to school)

Alijah Martin
Coleman Hawkins
Norchad Omier

Hmm almost wondering if he ended up there at their direction but that’s a real spitball.

Didn’t know anything about him but he’s athletic and if that’s a wingspan number for him he’s got some real chops in terms of tools and his college production on the defensive boards and blocking shots (1st in the big east twice in block percentage and first in the NCAA once) were legit.

Broome is another of these terribly difficult to assess prospects in this draft. He was so productive in all areas in one the most competitive conferences, but he has obvious reasons to think it might not translate to the NBA. I do like him though.

I think I would go Kalkbrenner because I keep seeing size really helping teams win (thinking Hartenstein a big example). Kalk also has the potential to develop a three point game which would make him even more useful.

I just mentioned this in the FA thread but it's probably more connected here.

It may be stating the obvious but one of the reasons I'm guessing so many of us obsess about the draft is that EVERY YEAR there are low draft picks and UDFAs who end up being key contributors on playoff teams and players that we wish we had on our team.

and they were all gettable if they had been identified right about now for this draft and past drafts.

There are definitely going to be prospects selected after 28/32 and even UDFAs in this draft class who end up being really good. And it's not a lottery ticket where it's blind luck. There certainly is some luck involved but it's really scouting, fit, and development.

Well yeah but the thing is, there's usually only like 1 or 2 guys per draft (maybe 3) who get picked 2nd round or UDFA who end up being good players. And I don't mean like they were pretty good for like 1 season because they were on a tanking team so they got lots of minutes or a bunch of guys got hurt so they got to play a lot.

I mean like consistently showing over the course of multiple seasons that they can be relied upon as a solid contributor at the NBA level.

So if there's only like 2 of those guys per draft and there's 30 teams, we've got like a 1 out of 15 chance at getting 1 of them. The odds are very low. So it's not like Boston isn't finding those guys but all the other teams are.

Also, there's less opportunity for a 2nd round/UDFA type of guy to carve out a role on a team as deep/talented as boston.

Yet we have Hauser..who was an UDFA signed just 4 yrs ago..
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

I have come to the conclusion that the one thing I would really like to see is Boston trading Hauser and 28 together to move up and get a better Tier player than what might be available at 28. We need to shed money with Hauser and getting someone that can step in this coming season and be a rotation level player/starter for future title runs.

After one month of looking at prospects, I still have Danny Wolf and Fleming as my top 2. Chances are greater that we would need to trade up. Can't wait to see who falls to 28. Boston would still have 32 to truly get BPA as well. Too many Gems will be there. Bet on it.

Would also love Penda or Coward.

This is a fascinating draft especially in the 20s. It feels very uncertain which could backfire for us or help us.

One player I am interested to see the draft rumors on is Drake Powell. With his athletic testing being super impressive, I could see someone really wanting him in the high teens/early 20s. A move like that could definitely push someone down to us.

I feel Drake has some J Brown like qualities. Might have some nice upside for sure. Does he have enough Feel for the game? His shooting looks good enough. Definitely wouldn't complain on getting him. Seems like a good 2 way player. Wish he was a Bit taller. But Yes he has some length to make up for some of that.

Agreed. The benefit of him could end up being that someone bites on him earlier and that bumps someone else down to us.

Dawson Garcia as a Hauser replacement?
Or Miles Norris/Drew Peterson replacement (if one of them will replace Hauser)?
I think he will go undrafted but has the skills (40% from 3)

Hauser and 28 for Fleming in the early 20s would be fantastic…and not terribly unrealistic. It needs to be a team that doesn’t have a need for a Fleming and has a need for a Hauser though :)

Yes, but it would be Sam and a quality player probably still at 28.

Hauser is worth a first rounder and then we have 28. I think it is crazy to trade up when there is very little chance that any player you draft is gonna be better than hauser.

Also, I think we should trade out of first. Maybe get a future first or two seconds. We didn’t need a rookie on the team.

Either that, or we stash a player at 28 and 32.

I like signing UDFAs as two ways.

Not sure about that. Maybe you are right, but at this time I believe the likely hood of getting a 1st for Hauser is not great. I am thinking If the Nets, who want to trade their last 3 1sts to get another lottery pick, don't get that trade maybe one of their 25th-26th picks can be done.

I don't know if we're gonna need to trade a lot of guys for financial reasons, but just generally speaking, if Jordan Walsh and JD Davison don't pan out as NBA players, we won't have anyone on the team under 25. Even Baylor Scheierman, last year's pick, is turning 25 before Halloween.

You look at the young guys on OKC and even Indiana and man, I think we could use some young dudes on the roster.

I can not agree more with this.

It's certainly trending back that direction. Anxious to see what brads solutions will be.

And then see what Joe will do
Getting the right players is the first step
Playing these players is more important

I think we have a first round selection with JD (can be 30th pick in this draft - easy). I don't like his BBall IQ, but he has the experience and played in our system for several years and is only 22. Can be had for cheap

Return to Boston Celtics
