Re: OT: Art, Music, Literature, Media, and More! Part 1
Anyone watch the Hip Hop Evolution series on Netflix? Season two came out a couple of months ago, it is pretty well done and enjoyable I thought. The topics for the second season make the first season make more sense when you put them all together because I was a little confused by what they choose to include and what they didn't in the first season.
As a bit of a hip hop nerd (at least up until the early 2000's) I had a few problems with certain episodes, like how can you make a Bay Area episode without looking at group like the Hieroglyphics, Hobo Junction and even a group like the Invisibl Skratch Piklz (though they didn't really look at any turntablists)? And the South episode didn't look at Outkast/Dungeon Family or any Atlanta groups either. Obviously they are going to be limited by who they could get to do interviews. But I learnt a heap I didn't know too, very enjoyable.
I noticed they are produced by Banger Films and Sam Dunn was an executive producer or something. Sam Dunn made the fantastic Metal Evolution series from a few years ago which I highly recommend as well.
I would highly recommend both series to people who dig hip hop and metal, but also to anyone who just likes music in general because they are pretty informative.

I've just finished watching "Roma" by Alfonso Cuarón. Best film I've seen in years. It's not about the plot or even the dialogue -- it's about the range of emotions that the movie elicits. Set in the early 70's in Mexico, shot in unbelievably beautiful B&W, acted impeccably... Not what you would call arthouse material, but more artistic than anything else out there these days. I think Netflix wanted their own "Manchester by the Sea" but they may have gotten something even more memorable.
It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but after over two hours it left me wanting more.

This isn't something I'm reading but it's something I've just finished working on and since we're all Celtics fans here I'm guessing (hoping) some of you are Red Sox fans as well. I spent the entire 2018 Red Sox season writing a running diary of the team and the final result was my new book which was published earlier this month! It's called A Win For Every Stitch: A Fan's Diary of the 2018 Boston Red Sox Championship Season. You can check it out here (cheap plug, I know...sorry!) --> https://www.amazon.com/dp/1731453728
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

First, congrats on the book.
Second, is your user name a nod to the Suede song?

Thank you! And yes, it is. I'm glad to see you recognized it, there aren't many Suede fans here in the US.

I'm fairly obsessed with Suede. All three of their 'reunion' albums have been excellent. Considering a jaunt to the UK to see them play next year...

Nice to meet another fan! I'm fairly obsessed as well and agree, the new albums have been incredible. I wish they'd come over here to do a small run of shows. I was just in the UK on business earlier this month, but every time I go over the bands I'd love to see don't seem to be playing. Or if they are, I end up being so busy that I can't swing it.

You might like their new one, The Blue Hour, which is more conceptual in nature, similar to DMS.

For those of you discussing Hill House...yeah. It ended up being ****. It was more This Is Us than The Others. Kate Siegel is so much hotter than Cugino. Just saying. Haha. Both hot. For a great show...check out Bodyguard on Netflix. For a good show...check out Homecoming on Prime. Also...new Ray Donavan is awesome.
Saw Creed 2 and Green Book. Creed 2 was nowhere near the film of the first but it was actually more enjoyable. Green Book is the best movie of the year. Hands down. This coming from a die hard Star is Born advocate.
I loved Hill House up until the very end. It turned into a weird episode of ..ya.. this is us or insert any network tv show. It seemed they didn’t know how to end it.
Up until the end it was the best horror show of movie I’d ever seen. I’ve never found supernatural stuff scary maybe because I don’t believe at all in spirits that it can’t geg to me but I thought the acting was really good by most of the actors.
I would find something like s home invasion scarier because of the reality of those things.

Bird Box - I heard some people hype it up. It was ok. There were a couple of things that weren't believable. Especially every car that crashed immediately exploding. I thought hollywood was done with that silly idea. Also it seemed like it ripped off the happening (the one where plants make everyone kill themselves) which was also a bad movie.

"Bandersnatch" (Black Mirror) is a fail for me. Excellent idea for an interactive show ("borrowed" from the "Choose your own adventure" children's book series from 40 years ago), but mediocre implementation. The choices that we are given are sometimes idiotic (Throw the medicine down the toilet or toss it? Pick up the book or the framed photo?). There's very little correlation between the choices that we make and what happens next. The ending that I ended up with made little sense and left me with a sense of wasted time that I will never get back (unusual for a Black Mirror product).
Any of the CYOA books from the 70's was better than "Bandersnatch," though if you are not old enough to have read those books you may get a kick out of this useless novelty.

I was excited for it considering I’m a huge fan of Telltale and Quantic Dream games, but I found it really repetitive and tedious at times. Great idea that hopefully can be improved upon though.

I mostly love that album for being a spiritual sequel to Bowie's Diamond Dogs, idk if they are still doing that type of music though, it's been many years since.
