Both Joseph and Varnado were working on non-guaranteed deals, and the Celtics had until Monday at 5 p.m. to guarantee their contracts. In electing to go in a different direction, Boston opens up two roster spots, which it likely will look to fill as other teams waive players.

Varnado's departure isn't overly surprising, as the Celtics signed him out of the NBA Development League on Dec. 24 primarily to help bolster the frontcourt in the wake of Chris Wilcox's thumb injury.

Joseph being waived is a bit more surprising, as Boston had been high on the former Syracuse forward, who was selected with the 51st pick in last year's draft. Joseph had spent the majority of the season with the D-League's Maine Red Claws, where he averaged 17.7 points and 5.3 rebounds in 10 games.

This leaves the Celtics with two open roster spots, and it appears they have enough room to sign two "veteran minimum" free agents under the $74.2 million "hard cap" the Celtics are operating under. The Celts options include targeting a veteran free agent (Kenyon Martin, Chris Andersen), dipping into the D-League, waiting for buyouts, or keeping open roster spots to preserve roster and trade flexibility.

Looks like a Big Trade is coming.
Lee & Green are unnecessary. Bass, is next in line, on the Trade-Bait spectrum. Collins; yeah Collins.
Micah Downs may actually end up back on the Team, to fill out the Roster.

we should try and sign Arinze Onuaku for the rest of the season. he always seems to be injured, but i still believe the kid is going to be a rebounding force in the nba.

With Joseph gone, Green is the only SF other than Pierce. Unless a SF comes in as part of a trade or signing, Green is actually very necessary.

Cousins for Lee and a pick. You just rick-rolled the Kings. Even Petrie isn't that stupid.

Birdman and K-Mart would be my choices for those spots if a trade doesn't go down before the deadline. Birdman's rebounding/shot-blocking and K-Mart's defense at the 4 - 2 very nice bench weapons.

Heat to sign Varnado. Or as I like to call it, Heat are consulting Varnado on the Boston playbook.

why do people seem to think players who arent playing well with us are wanted by every other team in the league?

Green has no value at that contract, coming off that injury with this production. youd be lucky to get contracts like MWP back.

Lee is playing bad, but i think most people assume its his situation and hed be fine elsewhere. still, good luck getting a rival GM to admit that.

Bass is useless and youd make the same trade we made to get him for the same exact 1 dimensional player. dejuan blair.

and melo hasnt played a minute of meaningful NBA play.
