This is my point. I'm very underwhelmed with Smart's useful albeit limited play so far. What I don't understand is what Julius Randle has to do with all these intriguing young basketball players.

The PG position is the deepest by a mile.

Yeah, easily. Smart guards 2s and 3s 90% of his time on the court anyways. He is essentially a playmaking 2.
PG has interesting depth. 20 isn't that much worse than 8, but it falls off hard after the 20s. PF has interesting players into the 50s and 60s.

PG basically has a whole heap of talents that easily could be enough to win you a title.

PF I feel has dropped off significantly but I get your point about the 50s and 60s guys.

And yeah Smart is basically a 2 with his size and lack of true speed, but his skill set is still suited to being a point guard in my opinion. Just a strange player.

Marcus is about what one should expect from a middle of the lottery guy. Excellent at a couple things and mediocre/poor at others. His ideal role is rotation player on a winning team. I'm not particularly impressed with the players picked behind him or even directly in front of him. We needed to be in the Top 3 of that draft to get an impact guy....too bad we won too many worthless games.

I was a Hood guy. I would still take him over Marcus 10/10, twice on Sundays. I don't know about the other guys but out of that list, Jokic, Nurk are the only other guys i would take over Marcus. All 3 of these guys would help this team more than what Marcus is doing for us now.

I wasn't banging the drum for him when he was coming out of UCLA or anything, but I'd take LaVine over Smart.

Smart might be a better role player off the bench now, but the potential of LaVine turning into a Harden in OKC type player is worth it. He's an absolute sniper and he's turning into an effective P&R ballhandler. Yeah, he's not there defensively and might be a bit soft. Who cares. At the rate he's improving he could be scoring an efficient 25 ppg at SG and best player out of that draft.

Aren't LaVine and Hood both reaches at #6? Or would people really pick them there without the benefit of hindsight?

Yes and no. But I understood this to be a hindsight-based exercise. Talking about things in hindsight is fine if you qualify it reasonably imo.

I still don't think LaVine plays winning basketball. Lots of talent but I think he's still more or less Gerald Green.

That's what I would have said when he was a kid at UCLA. But he's winning me over as a pro.

I think sometimes this forum, which in general has a refreshing appreciation of team basketball, underrates players who don't fit the two-way box. That's how I stand on LaVine. Making him struggle through minutes at PG seems to have helped.

Smart needs to be on a team where he almost never touches the ball on offense, unfortunately he's now the main ball handler of our bench. I think he brings a toughness to the team that we sorely need but beyond that, I don't like his game at all.

Have some patience, my friends. Marcus Smart has intangibles that are rare in the NBA. Look at the jump Avery Bradley has made in the past two years. No reason Smart cannot do the same. Look at how Draymond Green and Jimmy Butler played at 22 and 23 and then how they played at 24 or 25.

Be patient. We have nothing to lose--we are not winning the NBA title this year--and it could well be worth the wait. Danny and Brad love Marcus for a reason.

Did you really say you wanted Hood at 6 before the draft? Not a list of players you liked including Hood...I mean, did you call for Hood at 6? Because a LOT of guys sound impressive in retrospect so I'm having a hard time knowing which of you guys really are impressive. :)

Hood dropped to the Jazz at 23 and they wisely picked him up. But there's no way they would have taken him at 6. They passed on him at 5, we passed at 6, and everyone else passed all the way down. If you guys are doing better than all those GM's, you need to document your stuff and get your resumes together. The NBA needs you.

At 6, no. Did i like him better than Marcus as a prospect, yes. If Danny has a position for me where i can spot talent, sure i'd take it in a heartbeat, but alas i'm not qualified for such a position, woe is me.

Smart isn't any good. Zeller isn't any good. Here KO isn't any good. Amir isn't good. Rozier isn't good. Brown isn't any good. Neither is Mickey.

Once the wins start coming, everyone will look better. Like magic.

Finally people are starting to talk about this.

I won't be drawn on the draft position of Smart. I was against it but I don't think it was a "bad pick", just not the one I would've made. I do think that his play has been sub-par and he's not developing as he should be and the way he keeps shooting the 3-ball I find concerning, coupled with his lack of penetration.
No one will ever know what Philly wants but I really think we missed the boat on packaging up with another asset for Noel (or one of the other talls).

Let's put Marcus' numbers into some perspective...

Player A per36 numbers when 22y old: 16.8 PTS, 4.2 REB, 4.7 AST, 1.5 STL, 0.6 BLK, 3.3 TO, 46% FG, 30% 3PT, 53% TS
Player B per36 numbers when 21y old: 16.4 PTS, 4.2 REB, 2.9 AST, 1.5 STL, 0.4 BLK, 1.7 TO, 43% FG, 34% 3PT, 60% TS
Player C per36 numbers when 21y old: 16.0 PTS, 4.8 REB, 4.7 AST, 1.9 STL, 0.5 BLK, 3.7 TO, 42% FG, 33% 3PT, 51% TS
Player D per36 numbers when 21y old: 14.5 PTS, 3.1 REB, 5.1 AST, 1.7 STL, 0.1 BLK, 2.8 TO, 37% FG, 32% 3PT, 51% TS
Player E per36 numbers when 21y old: 12.7 PTS, 3.0 REB, 2.3 AST, 1.1 STL, 0.3 BLK, 2.0 TO, 49% FG, 40% 3PT, 55% TS
Player F per36 numbers when 22y old: 12.4 PTS, 4.5 REB, 3.9 AST, 1.3 STL, 0.6 BLK, 2.1 TO, 40% FG, 32% 3PT, 50% TS
Player G per36 numbers when 21y old: 12.1 PTS, 5.5 REB, 3.6 AST, 2.0 STL, 0.4 BLK, 1.7 TO, 35% FG, 25% 3PT, 46% TS
Player H per36 numbers when 22y old: 11.8 PTS, 3.6 REB, 4.9 AST, 0.9 STL, 0.0 BLK, 2.3 TO, 44% FG, 26% 3PT, 52% TS
Player I per36 numbers when 22y old: 10.9 PTS, 5.6 REB, 1.4 AST, 1.1 STL, 0.5 BLK, 1.4 TO, 40% FG, 18% 3PT, 52% TS

It is not too hard to find out which of these players is Marcus Smart. However, it may be quite interesting comparisons:
Spoiler:
Player A is Dwyane Wade
Player B is James Harden
Player C is Victor Oladipo
Player D is Chauncey Billups
Player E is Avery Bradley
Player F is George Hill
Player G is Marcus Smart
Player H is Jarrett Jack
Player I is Jimmy Butler
Player J is Eric Bledsoe

I am quite optimistic about Marcus. :)

I would of perfered Saric at 6 but Smart doesn't need much improvement to be really good and worth the pick if one part of his offense comes around . I assumed he'd adjust to the NBA and find a way to drive to the rim at an avg rate considering he was great in college at driving but his lack of 1st step and moves make me fear his offense will be shooting based which at best has been slightly below avg at 33% 3pt fg his rookie year. If his defense remains excellent he can get away with slightly below avg offense 33% 3pt & 400% fg 70ft%

Then why did Al Horford repeatedly say he has been most impressed with Marcus Smart this year as a player and leader?

Why did the Raptors coach say Smart will soon be one of the top guards in the East?

It's way too early but when you read between the lines of what Danny and others have said, while everyone has improved, and Rozier and Brown have entered the rotation, the club is expecting big things from Smart and Kelly this year. We simply haven't seen much (or any) of these two yet

Marcus is a leader, I'll give him that, but that doesn't mean he's talented. Are you really quoting dime a dozen quotes dudes give to the media? If those were actually true Rozier would be averaging 30 points a game right now instead of barely dribbling the ball past half court before pawning the play making duties on to someone else. Come on now.

The thing that stand out to me is that his assist numbers are low compared to other PG and his shooting numbers are terrible. Adding SG to the mix hides his poor assist rate. This is my beef with him. He doesn't have a defined position or role.
