I think Smart is kinda of a combo. You'd need Horford plus another player who can pass, run the PnR well to make that work. And I like Smart off the bench. We will see tho.
Good assessment:

I'm interested in Russell but I don't understand how we get him. Both he and the Nets would have to want him to come here.

How does that work exactly?

Also, if Kyrie signs with LAL (which I fully expect to happen) don't the Nets just re-sign Russell?

I don’t think Smart as a pg would work. I think he’s just an average playmaker at best. He makes too many risky passes and is prone to turnovers. We would be better off with a natural pg that can shoot decently.

Smart has trouble with fast point guards.

We need someone who feed the ball to Tatum, Jaylen, Morris (if he is still there next season) etc... He is a great facilitator, and that's probably what this team need right now, instead of a selfish scorer.
I agree but why would he leave the lakers?

They have to renounce him to sign a max player - he’d have to re-up there for the vet minimum

We really should be preparing ourselves for the possibility of Rozier returning. Most likely scenario imo. Unless he gets an outlandish offer from some team.

Not too many teams don't have a starting PG at the moment:
• Hornets, if Kemba leaves
• Pacers
• Lakers (I imagine they want someone better)
• Pelicans, if Jrue is moved to his more preferred offguard position
• Suns, but they already have Tyler Johnson at $19M if he opts in plus they're rumored to have interest in DLo
• Jazz
• Wizards (I can't imagine them committing to long-term money to a PG)

So it's most likely just the Jazz, Pacers, and maybe Hornets. Jazz and Pacers want to contend. Don't know how high they are on Rozier.

I’m really not all that upset about Rozier coming back in the right contract.

He is a useful player despite some flaws. I think the media tour he did soured some people on him way too much.

I don't get why the celtics can't pursue Kemba Walker or Jimmy Butler? Lakers are going after Walker now. The Celtics should be as well! He's just as talented as Irving.

A lineup of:
Walker
Tatum
Brown
Hayward
Hortford

With Smart, Baynes and Morris off the bench is fine with me!

Smart is more of a PG than Rozier. I'd honestly prefer to see him get more of a shot to be a true PG, I think he'd rise to the occasion.

Rather than pay Rozier, I'd see if we could snag Goran Dragic on short years, or Pat Beverley. Smarf and Bev in the backcourt would be a menacing defensive combo.

Rozier may be in a similar situation to Smart last year. He shops around, looking for an offer sheet in the $15-16M range, doesn't get one, and resigns with the Celtics for considerably less.

But I'd prefer the team to move on, even if they can get Rozier at a discount.

I’ll be curious to see what direction this offseason goes now. I wouldn’t mind a “run-it-back” option for the most part. I will never say we’d be better off without Kyrie (or AD, for that matter) but I do think we had too many mouths to feed last season. I would expect a massive uptick in production from some of our guys this year. I would like to add Rubio or even Rondo to this mix.

Of course I also wouldn’t rule out a different deal knowing how Danny operates. We still have a lot of depth on the wing; maybe we could turn that into one all star wing player or even a big.

Dragic opted in.

Which player would you have. Collision or Beverly IMO but people keep bringing up Rubio. BTW I think the cost is probably in this order. Rozier, Beverly, Collison, Rubio, Rondo

Well, the Knicks appear to have struck out in free agency. If that is true, I'm offering Hayward to NY for one of their youngsters. After July 1 the Knicks will have more than enough cap space to absorb Hayward. Then I'm renouncing the trade exception and putting a max offer sheet in front of DeAngelo Russell. I can also go after Rubio or Beverley if I can't get Russell.
