Tell me how it's a pretty good haul ?

Avery Bradley outperformed his draft slot. Jared Sullinger outperformed his draft slot. Marcus Smart outperformed his draft slot. Rozier outperformed his draft slot. Kelly Olynyk goes higher in a redraft. Brown and Tatum he nailed, even got an extra draft pick out of Tatum. The recent guys too hard to tell. But you're right he's missed on some guys in the 25ish range like Fab Melo and Jajuan Johnson. But RObert Williams in this range is a steal, easily goes higher in a redraft. Langford was a consensus top-5 pick before his freshman year and Ainge got him for free (used pick from Fultz/Tatum trade).

What kind of haul do you expect outside of the lottery? Every team sucks at drafting outside the lottery. The Nuggest are an exception it seems, Raptors too.

I am not going to tell you "we should have take this guy instead".

But Sullinger did not bring anything special to this team. Smart was picked 6th overall, not sure he "outperformed" his draft slot.
Rozier was a bench player, one good season and a terrible shooter.
I agree with Olynyk.
Rob Williams is not a steal right now. He is always injuried, he very raw. Mitchell Robinson is a steal in the same draft and 10 spots below Rob.

I don't expect the next Giannis or Tony Parker with a middle/late round picks. But don't tell me that we were successful in the last 10 years.

Redraft 2014, does Smart go higher or lower? Redraft 2012, does Sullinger go higher or lower than 21. Rozier goes higher than 16 in a redraft. ROb Williams, one year later, goes higher in a redraft for sure.

2014 : Embiid, Jokic, LaVine, Garry Harris, Nurkic, Wiggins, Aaron Gordon, Capela, Randle, Bogdanovic, Dinwiddie, Jabari Parker... Smart could stand at 6, or fall at 10/12. Depends of what your team needs.

Sullinger is a special case. The guy was supposed to be a lottery pick before his back issues. But don't forget he only played 4 seasons with us and was out of the league after his fifth year.

Jaden McDaniels with the Grizz pick and punt the later picks down the road and see if we can swindle another lotto pick out of someone

A reason the pick is likely to be that low is that Memphis just drafted Brandon Clarke at 21 or whatever. Other guys who went lower than that include Giannis, Jokic, Gobert, Marc Gasol, Myles Turner (I believe), Capela (I believe) ...

I'll admit this prospect is very intriguing and have been doing some checking up on him.

But he screams predraft riser... Right now with the way things are going with the Memphis pick I doubt we'll have the chance to take him.

Or he could turn out to be a classic Ainge pick -- elite high school prospect who disappointed in college, like Bradley, Ojeleye, Langford and (although he didn't slip as much in the draft) Brown.

Dante looks intriguing. Raw, but intriguing. He's a legit big with rim protecting abilities tho so Danny's gotta pass.

Could be a nice find in late lottery? Sort of a less skilled, poor man's Al Horford with more size and length? Dante looks like he could fill out a bit more too. His wingspan is same as Time Lord's, but Dante looks a legit 6'11. With Rob having injuries the team should consider to developing another young rim protector.

Whatever we do don’t let Austin Ainge in the draft room. Celts need to hire someone who knows how to evaluate players.

If Mitch Robinson is such a steal, why does he come off the bench and play limited mins on a bottom five team without another center on the roster?

10.2 pts (FG 71%)/ 6.8 rbs (3.0 off reb), 1.8 blks in 22 minutes and a 71.3 TS%.

His problems is that he is often in foul trouble. But that's something that you can fix at 21 years old.

Man if you're taking Zach LaVine, Wiggins, Gordon, Randle, Dinwiddie, or Parker over Smart, we just have an unbelievably different concept of what the NBA is.

Danny has drafted 1 all star in his almost 20 years as gm. He's very good at cap management and generally wins trades. But he has a really unimpressive eye for talent.

YEah that's true too. I also think for the most part the draft is a crapshoot and your best bet is to acquire as many picks as possible, which is what Ainge does. Even Denver has had some duds like Mudiay, Ainge hasn't flunked on a lottery pick that badly. Given 100 draft picks, I think it all averages out. Right now Denver has hit on some late guys like Jokic and Monte Morris so they look like draft savants, but is it a repeatable skill longterm? You find an MVP candidate at 41 and it skews the calculus. If Ainge had drafted Jokic would anyone look at his drafting ability any differently?

Here are every single one of his lottery picks: Smart, Brown, Tatum (and now Langford). I'd say he basically nailed them all, then missed on some guys in the 18-30 range, hit on some there, hit on a couple late picks. Dunno what more anyone could expect if they're being realistic. When you draft outside the lottery, you should expect the player drafted to be a reserve player if you're lucky.

This might need to be updated in the future... like in a few weeks. There are at least two future all star draftees on the roster right now. Maybe or maybe not this season, but soon.

Unrelated to that... On a previous subject in this thread, for anyone-

Take a look at any other franchise over the same period of time that Ainge has run the Celtics.
List their draft picks.
Look at the misses.
That's what the draft is.

Retrospective drafting is easy half a season into players' first years. It's not so easy on draft day. That's true for every GM in the history of the league.

Until Marcus Smart, his highest pick was 15 unless you can count the Marcus Banks/Perkins trade (but then he nabbed Perkins at 27 and that destroy the argument that he can't draft). Stunning that he hadn't drafted a star.

Post#40 » by Fencer reregistered » Sun Jan 12, 2020 10:38 pm

There are currently 40 guys in the top-10 in fan all-star voting (because there are 4 categories).

The EC guards, I believe, include 8 top-ten picks plus Lowry and VanVleet. And Lowry was traded and almost traded a few times before he was agreed to be a star, while VanVleet wasn't drafted at all.

The EC frontcourt is more spread out. Drummond and Sabonis went #11. Bam went 14th and Giannis 15th. Siakam and Butler famously went a lot later than that. And Tacko ... well, you know. :) If Khris MIddleton were on the list he'd be helping spread things too.

The WC guards look to me like 8 guyswho went top-10, Donovan Mitchell (who went 13th), and Alex Caruso (undrafted).

The WC frontcourt consists mainly of guys who went very high, with Kawhi and Jokic being the exceptions. If Lebron were listed as a guard, the perhaps Gobert would be an exception too.

So yeah -- asking that somebody draft multiple "all-stars" without high picks is pretty demanding. And by the way:

Ainge traded away high lottery picks in two consecutive drafts, 2006 and 2007. In 2006, the only all-stars drafted after the trade pick were Lowry ... and Rondo. In 2007 the only all-star drafted after the trade pick was Marc Gasol. So it really is fair to judge Ainge's use of high picks solely on the choices of Smart, Brown and Tatum.

And finally: The only all-star drafted after Smart was Nikola Jokic.
