didn't know much about this kid but i like this pick. looks like he has nba level skills, body, and athleticism, which is a big win at #45.

definitely want him to stay overseas for another year tho. i love how yam improved on all the things they told him to last year. if begarin does that he would be like an bonus FRP next year, like yam this year.

You had me at 7' wingspan.

By comparison, Olynyk's wingspan is 6'10".

If he's overseas, we can use our 2-way contracts for other guys which means we could have 18 players under our control instead of 17.

15 players on active roster + 2 2-way guys + 1 draft and stash = 18

That's how it benefits us.

How it benefits the player? Many pro leagues in europe are comparable (or even better) competition level compared to g-league. By playing overseas he not only plays vs good competition but he gets to stay in his home country a little longer where he is more comfortable, he's closer to friends/family, he knows the culture, he knows the food, the language, etc. and often times he stays on the same overseas team he had already been on so he knows the coaches, he knows his teammates, etc.

Why Begarin at 45?

1) Wings are the most valuable position in the modern NBA. Why? Everyone knows big men aren't as valuable anymore because of the increased spacing on the floor, faster paced game and emphasis on shooting - most big men are simply too slow. Most bigs aren't great shooters, and most bigs can't defend in space in a switch-happy league when they have to switch onto smaller/quicker guards/wings. Meanwhile, smaller guards struggle to score inside and struggle to defend against bigger guys on switches. With wings you have a happy medium.

2) Specifically, wings with good size (6'6" or taller, preferably 200+ lbs) and length (6'9" wingspan or longer) are more valuable. Wings with above average speed/quickness/agility = even better. Wings with good explosiveness/burst/athleticism/leaping ability = even better. Wings who can handle the ball and create off the bounce = even better. Wings who can shoot from 3, off the catch and off the dribble = even better. Wings who are also strong passers who look for their teammates rather than being a black hole = even better. Wings are who 2-way players who are good defensively = even better. Begarin checks literally every one of those boxes. The fact that he's also not ball dominant is the icing on the cake. Oh and he's only 18 yrs old so if he's this good at age 18, imagine how good he'll be down the road!

3) We can stash him overseas, freeing up a roster spot for the next 1-2 yrs. A roster spot which we can use to add a good veteran player. We have too many young guys on the team as it is - we need more veterans, not young guys. Let Begarin keep developing overseas for 2 more yrs, not using up a roster spot. Then in 2 yrs he comes back over here ready to dominate.

Like what I’ve been seeing in his sizzle reels granted I like everyone we end up taking. He got the bostoncouch seal of approval as well.

Couldn’t tell if he was more demar derozen or josh Childress hopefully the former. Like the peitrus comp too. His defense looked solid as well as his body and finishing abilty. Pleasantly surprised by his passing hope he plays in summer league.

good article, but worth noting that begarin is not 6'5", 192. he measured at league elite camp at 6'6", 214 lbs with 7'0" wingspan. and 34% from 3 this past season but he shot 23/47 (48.9%) from 3 over his last 11 games (including the 2 scrimmages at the league elite camp.

What, is he gonna grow 5" this summer, which seems to be how Danny recalls it to have gone with Giannis?

I said vibes you muppet i didnt say same player.

He’s athletic, strong and somewhat raw. At that age he’s actually more athletic than the average teenager.

Giannis was listed as 6-9 before draft. Maybe it’s not insane to hope this kid could be 6-8 in 1-2 years.

He kind of reminds me of Ricky Davis in terms of height, length, skill and dunking.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

He'll probably just join in via Zoom.
