I don't agree that it was time to part ways, obviously they felt differently. Belichick is/was the best coach and the best GM in the history of the NFL. Even heading into a multi-year rebuild on the back of a couple down years I can't imagine finding a better option to lead that (although I hope Mayo proves me wrong).
The way the end with Brady was handled was unquestionably a mistake. His drafting in recent years has been a struggle, but if you look at his whole resume it's not as bad as people like to paint it (very similar to Ainge). Utlimately after leveraging the future to prop up a team that was at the top of the league for so long there was an inevitable fall from grace that was unavoidable, but again I can't imagine having the option of keeping Bill around to lead us through it and on to the next stage and choosing not to.
We've got the #3 pick and a ready made defense, I think Bill could turn things around speedily. He's obviously struggled with personnel decisions the last couple years, but the brain drain is real from having to turn over his co-ordinators and assistants so frequently due to their success. His hubris in reportedly wanting to stick to his guns on guys like Patricia and the fact that Scar isn't walking back through the door in the future is concerning, but ultimately water finds its level and I would expect it to do so here.
Take Marvin Harrison Jr., who seems like a can't miss prospect to me, at #3 and turn around what seems like a decades long stretch of being unable to solve the WR draft puzzle and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if they were back in playoff contention even if it's Mac Jones back under C. Better yet, if you're high on one of the non-top 3 QBs, trade up and get a duo that can kick off the rebuild. Bring McDaniels back to run the offense and we're in business. The offensive line is in desperate need of attention, but with plenty of cap space to burn through that's totally addressable. We'd basically be back to the start of the Brady era with a rock solid defense and an offense that just needs to keep pace enough to win.
Can't complain too much, it was the single greatest stretch any NFL team has ever had and it was a pleasure to watch start to finish.
