I was just chilling waiting for next season to start but clearly Mr. Stevens does not rest.

https://www.masslive.com/celtics/2024/08/celtics-sign-veteran-guard-to-compete-for-roster-spot.html
The athletic guard gambled on himself with a veteran’s minimum deal last season in Brooklyn but with that team looking to rebuild, it appears he’s looking to gamble on himself again by trying to earn a roster spot in Boston. Boston currently has 14 players signed to guaranteed deals but have regularly kept a final roster spot open for flexibility at the start of the season. Offseason surgery for big man Kristaps Porzingis has also put a bit of a premium on big-man depth to begin the year for the team so an additional injury in the frontcourt could lead to the front office adding another big. However, Walker could be another spark plug option off the bench behind Payton Pritchard if he impresses in training camp and makes the team. That would give the Celtics a potential upgrade over the departed Svi Mykhailiuk in the backcourt.

Can't believe he won't earn a roster spot with the Cs. Fulfills a need, very inexpensive, good addition, the
Champs get stronger, what's there not to like? Now, if there were only a Big Man equivalent of Walker available...

Re: Welcome to Boston, Lonnie Walker!!!
White and Holiday had a crazy-short offseason, so there will be some early backcourt minutes available for someone. If he fits in and plays, Walker will get open looks in Boston.
Walker's competition for that floor time is unproven:
Springer had one great summer game, which is not enough to make plans on, though hopefully his upward trajectory continues.
Not to bury him for eternity, but Scheierman had a disappointing summer league. Barring a surprise turnaround, he's likely headed for development in Maine.

Great point about Jrue and White. I hope Lonnie gets a lot of minutes early in the season.

Awesome signing. I has given up on getting Walker but Super Brad does it again. And basically risk-free.
And I agree about having an extra vet out there to fill in at times while resting Holiday and White.
Walker is also a good bench compliment to Springer. Sort of a yin/yang offense/defense that gives Joe more options. I'm not expecting much from Walsh or Scheierman this year, so that extra wing may come in handy.
And he's only 25. Seems like Lonnie has been around for a while. If he stays healthy we may see him find his higher potential here, beyond a one year stint.

One of those guys who always seemed to play well against us. I was ok with leaving the spot open but we lacked a true backup 2...and he's a solid vet who can shoot.

There is, we already got him: Xavier Tillman.
I think the early season we're good at big man depth while KP is out. Horfie, Tillman, Queta, Kornet. It's not great, but the team should have enough time before the trade deadline to evaluate the players and decide if KP is good to go.
There really wasn't too much out there that was going to be that Walker equivalent, so we'll see if "X marks the spot".
I've got high hopes for Queta too. I think he's going to be a fine beastie this year and turn some heads.

Some nice footage here of Walker IV dissecting the Celtic defense. Brad wanted him off the market!

Re: Welcome to Boston, Lonnie Walker!!!
The big man equivalent of Lonnie is someone like Thomas Bryant or Christian Wood and those guys are overhyped and don't impact the game (positively) as much as people think. Would rather have defensive-minded bigs since scoring comes easy elsewhere on the team.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Lonnie Walker!!!
Awesome pickup! This is the guy I wanted, but thought we had no chance in hell of signing him.
He's good enough to be our 6th or 7th man. He would start on some teams.

So you think he'll earn minutes over Hauser or Pritchard?

Yes. He’s more well-rounded than both.

Re: Welcome to Boston, Lonnie Walker!!!
If he's as good as everyone keeps saying but was signed at the minimum previous season(s) then can't even get a guaranteed deal this offseason, there must be some sort of red flag (orange flag?) we don't know about. But I'm sure Brad has it covered before he brought him in.

On August 28, 2021, Lonnie Walker was a guest at Spurs teammate Derrick and Hannah's wedding. Exactly three years later, they're once again teammates on the Celtics.

Lonnie last season was 100x better than those two be serious
He’s an 82 game guy but he was legit good last year for Brooklyn
