I'm officially over Smart after the last few games. I wish he had fixed his shooting, but to see him miss LAYUPS over and over again is maddening.

Realistically, the Celtics are looking at Smart's roster spot as backup point guard or backup shooting guard. His greatest value is defensive versatility, but I do feel that can be offset with a more potent scorer.

We have seen Smarts last games as a celtic. Some team will end up paying him 15-17 million a year. Good luck to that team as well when he has his normal 2-15 shooting nights.

Watch out for the Pacers for Smart...they like him and have a lot of cap space

Oh some team will. Smarts contract has disaster written all over it for any non contending team that overpays for him. He fits here most of the time but imagine having him on your team where he is playing 35+ minutes a game where he is jacking up 20 shots a game and hitting around 4 or 5 of them.

Still find it really hard to believe a team offers him 14-15 mil a year. A couple years ago.. sure.

I am telling you every single year some FA signs with a team and collectively everyone says "I cannot believe player X got 18 million a year!"

Smart is going to be that guy that we say that about in July.

Lol. At least we’ll know which GM will be fired in 2019.

Smart is going to get a big money deal, and I just wouldnt match it to be honest.

Hes an awesome player whos value cant be quantified by a stat sheet, but hes just not worth well over 10% of the cap, let alone more than the 15% he seems to be intimating he’s worth.

If Smart gets a big deal, you might as well tell every incoming player “Hey, you don’t have to improve at all! Just rely on the one aspect of your game you excel at and you will make bank.”

Smart hasn’t improved one iota since coming into the league. He still is what he always was.

Pay him accordingly.

No offense, but this is the worst possible take. A week ago, people were saying we have to pay him whatever he wants, and 7 days later some are saying he’s worthless. You need to have a more balanced view. For those who hated his last two games, you can console yourself with the fact that we probably wouldn’t have gotten by Philly without him.

I wouldn’t want to pay him starter money, but as a change of pace player and a guy who brings defensive intensity off the bench he is very valuable. My best bet is that he takes the QO and counts on a big playoff run and an increased cap to score big next year.

That article included public negotiation by both sides.

Smart said, in effect, "I'll sign with Boston for $12-14 million, but not less." An unnamed Celtic source said, in effect, "We're not paying that; have a great life!"

Smart's stance seems to be the conventional "I love being here. I hope my current team's offer is very close to the top offer I get, so that I can stay."

I think he's great defensively. He has super low IQ on offense. And to me he makes "winning plays" after basically making 1 or 2 shots out 10 more often than not. If he makes 4-5 shots he wont need the "winning, clutch plays". He has his moments way too ineffcient and hasn't changed anything about his offensive game sans the passing.
Good assessment:

Did the Celtics suspend him without pay for this year "incident"?

Teams have for a while now been making above-MLE offers to other teams' perimeter players who are defensive studs but questionable on offense. DeMarre Carroll is once such example. Solomon Hill is another.

Which of those signings have worked out well? I'd make a case for Andre Igoduola (who was much better offensively for some seasons than Marcus Smart is likely to ever be). But he's the most recent one who comes to mind. (P J Tucker's salary is in MLE range.)

No he doesn't. He's the best passer on the team. He can't shoot, that's all. He thinks he can make every one, but he can't. He makes 20 in a row in practice, but when the adrenaline is pumping he rushes the shots. That's not low IQ, it's low self-awareness.

I'm not sure about tjat. He's an average passer anyway.

The market is different, the market is different, the market is different

This isn't the summer of 16. Those contracts are irrelevant. The Pacers are the only team that makes long term deal sense. Other than that, I don't really see it. If you are going to splurge, there are better guys to try it on and not many teams with more than the MLE.
