I think the biggest benefit of the Robert Williams III pick is that we can let Baynes walk. I like Baynes, but re-signing a 20 MPG player coming off a career year at their price, not your price, is bad business. Danny knows this.

With Smart or Rozier, if one is gone there's a plan B. If you move Jaylen, there's a plan B, and if you did move him its probably for another versatile wing. With Baynes you didn't have a plan B.

Best Player Available is a nice theory but sometimes you need to use the draft to replace cheap roles with cheap players. That's hopefully what we just did.

Also seems like BPA to me. I had him as BPA at 16th pick.

I can buy that he's BPA. But even if it turns out he can play, Williams is a pretty limited player. Non-shooter and needs work to turn his athletic skillset into defensive quality.

We clown Ainge for loving combo guards, but a good guard can play 30-35 MPG, make a shot, hit their free throws, close the game etc. The "upside" of Bruce Brown turning out to be a player is really higher than Williams, even if he isn't big and athletic. The real advantage with the Williams is addressing a need.

Are Jordan and Capela limited players? Will Bamba be a limited player?

He is a developmental guy, think of Perk's timeline maybe plus a year. He is somoene who with some time and effort be a good starter, I am curious as to why he fell, he was projected top 15 and at worst top 20 to almost everyone.

He fell because in this day and age, NBA teams value 3 point shooting from their bigs. But ignore he works hard, he can be a Clint Capella type.

There is no reason in 3 or 4 years he can't learn to shoot the three, a little, Horford never shot the 3 when he was younger, Baynes never did going into the playoffs, it can be learned, a 7'5 wingpsan on a nice frame with above average foot speed for a big cannot.

Well to be fair both of those players had very good mid range shots for years before they even attempted shooting 3s.

idk with his FT rate in college I think it's being ambitious to think he'll ever learn to shoot the 3.

Shooting is a skill and a TON of players never learn it despite putting in endless practice.

Just like people often can't just "learn" to be a good defender through effort let alone a great one like Rob has the talent to become.

Yup. Then being surrounded with the likes of Kyrie, Hayward, Brown and Tatum on the perimeter then having Horford and Baynes teaching him the ins and outs while on the court. The perfect ideal scenario for him to maximize his potential, just like DJ had in LA and Capela had in HOU.
Really good to get a great hard defensive worker so cheap to work with that arsenal if offense.

Yep, thats exactly what this pick is.

Well to set expectations... he's a talented defender, not a hard working one.

All you hear about him is his teammates having to tell to keep his effort up during the season and having a shaky motor.

Hopefully though it being his first NBA season and on a winning team he'll play hard for the 10mpg he'll get. I have to imagine he will. You can't feel comfortable in your first 2 or so NBA seasons can you?

I'm with you on this. Sometimes, the limited player ends up being a better player than the more well-rounded player because they are REALLY good at what they do. For example, I would take Clint Capela over Marcin Gortat.

Also look at the bigs on the other top teams.

Cleveland: Tristan Thompson
Houston: Capela
Golden State: McGee/Bell

We need a guy like Williams to match up with these guys. We have a bruiser and a finesse guy but not a bouncy shotblocker and rim runner

No worries. Robert already followed the celtics account on instagram this morning. Surefire indication that he LOVES the celtics, wants nothing more than to work his butt off for the celtics, and will become a celtics legend in no time.

EDIT: Note to all our other players -- please learn how to throw proper alley-oop lob passes even though Williams it seems can catch anything within a one-mile radius of the rim.

In before we label this kid an R Tard and the whole board attacks him for his lack of work ethic for missing a call. Definitely a bone head move, but lets wait until he takes dab in the players lounge before start crucifying him
I don't believe in statistics. There are too many factors that can't be measured. You can't measure a ballplayer's heart. -Red Auerbach

I’ll settle for a Capela clone but wouldn’t mind legend. Legend would be good.

Hopefully we was just litty for celebrating going to the best team in the league for the next decade.

Full pass from me for being hungover bc he's ecstatic to be going to Boston.

Thanks. Yet Bamba went 21 picks earlier?

I mean, if you're serious then: Bamba doesn't have the motor issues, character issues, medical concerns that Robert Williams has. Bamba has historic level wingspan. Bamba has shown better defending and rebounding than Williams as well as reasonable shooting potential and decent low post moves along with a 68% FT shooting in college so you can actually play him in games when it matters as opposed to Rob.

For those reasons and more Bamba is being compared to Rudy Gobert and Robert Williams to Nerlens Noel.

Rob Williams is the perfect flyer at 27 for this team as a casualty of the modern NBA and concerns if there is a role for him. But that doesn't mean Bamba isn't a significantly better prospect.

Actually really excited for this pick. One of the best case scenarios for the Celtics at pick 27.

Summer leagues actually gonna be watchable lol.

Horford is the perfect big for him to work with.

Maybe I’m crazy but maybe his ceiling is that he becomes early Horford (when he didn’t have a 3) with more physical tools?

Good Passer shows potential of a handle. Horford could help him learn both.

His shot imo is the only thing that could lower the floor especially with how unordothox it looks but he looks like he might have a solid mid range (Baynes like) in the near future.

Another thing is that we can go small ball with a Kyrie Brown Hayward Tatum Horford lineup or go big with Kyrie Hayward Tatum Horford Baynes/Williams (future?). Insane Flexability for Brad to work with.
Bet with Stillwater Celtics will finish 6th or higher in ECF Standings Regular Season(17-18). [WON]
