If Ainge trades Smart, Auerbach will roll over in his grave. He is Red's kind of player: an instigator.

Boy is he tough to root for. I like the guy but the way he acts on the court is exactly the type of player I see myself disliking with a passion if he were on a rival team.

I wouldn't mind seeing him traded but hopefully they can get to a point where they sell high.

A guy who plays his ass off every possession, doesn't take crap or back down from anybody and who shows otherworldly support for his teammates is "tough to root for?"

I'm pretty sure you know that the player I'm having trouble getting behind is the part of him that flops and whines like a twelve year old.

Ah. So we'll forget how much of a team player he is just because he flops. Cool.

Okay, something like this? http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=hn9cges

NYK gets Young, Rozier*, Wes Johnson, Crawford, Brice Johnson, 2019 LAC 1st
BOS gets Pierce, 2021 unprotected LAC 1st
LAC gets Melo

*or a lesser player

Still really trying to convince myself there might be a way Crawford could help. So, here's a shot at a trade that gets some assets to the C's to compensate. Clips give up a lot of guys, so this might not be realistic. But none that seem to matter other than Crawford. They would have to sign at least one guy off the street, maybe it can be further tweaked. Knicks would also be cutting a few guys.

http://basketball.realgm.com/tradechecker/saved_trade/6806409

Clips get: Melo
Clips give: Crawford, Wes Johnson, Pierce, Brice Johnson, drop the protection from 2019 1st, 2021 unprotected 1st

Knicks get: Wes Johnson, Tyler Zeller, Pierce, Johnson, Young
Knicks give: Melo, Hernangomez

Celts get: Crawford, Hernangomez, dropped protection on Clips 2019 pick, Clips 2021 pick
Celts give: Zeller, Young

Why would Celts do this? Well, they would be punting the cap space. But they're getting Hernangomez as another center option to try out. If Crawford accepts a reduced regular season role with the idea he likely gets a bump in the playoffs, it MIGHT work. Crawford could mentor Rozier and Brown on the art of the cross-over for this year. Also has the Washington connection with IT and possibly Fultz. Still not sold myself, but if enough motivation is there to avoid him like the plague elsewhere, it could be worthwhile.

I like Hernangomez A LOT. Hard to see the Knicks moving him, though. He's one of their only genuinely impressive young pieces, and he's really tight with Porzingis.

I don't get it for New York. They do this just to get out of Melo's contract?

Dude, the top 4 players in draft are guards. Our fourth and fifth guards are rozier and Jackson. Smart is a luxury. I love him as a bench guard. But, we need a big. If we can turn smart into a good young big, I think you have to do it.

Agreed, not likely. But, what are they giving teams to take Crawford if they are dead set against it and Clippers hold them over a barrel that he is the big contract that must go to get it done?

The Knicks have to actually get something to bother dealing Anthony. The reason we are involved is to provide draft picks not get more.

I think Ainge just gets in on these discussions to laugh his balls off at how these guys have no viable trade assets but then want him to throw in a BRK pick.

Not necessarily. They have the Clippers pick that needs to be sent to NY. They can provide that and get a better one with more upside in return.

I just don't get what anyone gets out of a 3 way deal here. Rivers and Redick are both knocking down 3 pointers over 40%. I wouldn't lose that to pick up Anthony. Crawford is the only guy I'd deal. Can they sweeten the deal enough to have the Knicks accept him and the flotsam that needs to be added to him to match salaries (I think Wes Johnson is required)? What can the Knicks or Clippers give up to have another team who has the room or expiring contract(s) accept Crawford on their team and tie up their cap flexibility? Is the Clippers 2021 and/or Brice Johnson enough? I wouldn't if I'm Ainge. And, as you stated, they are looking at pick(s), (and/or expiring contracts) from the C's, but what the heck are the C's getting that is actually beneficial?

Assistant coach. Reinforce Celtic tradition.

Avery alone isn't enough for that, even assuming he isn't dealt.

I don't think Boston is involved unless they are getting Griffin. I don't get Griffin and Melo on the same team they will get destroyed defensively as a 3/4 tandem in the West too may touches and only one basketball.

The Clippers have been all over the map this season. But with Paul and no Griffin they went 7-1. This is just my hunch but I think CP3 is telling Doc I want Melo instead of Blake. Melo will stretch the floor and make it easier to use guys like Mbah a Mute and Bass that we know Doc loves. If I am Doc I want to come out of this with Melo and Crowder if I give up Blake.

If your Ainge Crowder is a tough piece to give up short term but you have Brown. Maybe Pierce is enough shooting to make it work for a couple of months and he can help groom Brown. Is Griffin a big enough upgrade to part with Crowder and his contract and whatever the draft picks area to get this done?

Of course Ainge is involved. This is right in Ainge's wheelhouse. Especially since Doc Rivers is the GM where Melo is supposed to be going. Wouldn't be surprised if something doesn't happen quickly. Probably this week.

At the end of the Melo ordeal it will probably end up being a 4 way trade and everyone will get what they want including Ainge. Ainge lives for this stuff.

heck, even 3-4 on 3's.

NV playing like he wants Boston's attention. Young, Zeller and D Jackson for NV?

Griffin isn't unlike Ibaka. Since 2011-12, when he shot .549 from the field, his field goal percentage has gone down every year, and is at .480 this season. He does draw some fouls, and shoots a better percentage on free throws. And his rebounding has declined statistically. He's a good passer and scorer, but he's dependent on his athleticism to get up above the rim, and is a question mark in terms of injuries and longevity.
