• How it works: Each team can present the deal differently to the league in order to maximize trade exceptions generated. Boston essentially lines up the deal by trading Rondo for no return, which generates a $12.9 million exception (his entire 2014-15 salary). Boston absorbs Wright's $5 million salary using Kris Humphries trade exception ($5.3 million), Nelson's $2.7 million via Joel Anthony trade exception ($3.8 million), and Crowder via the rest of the Anthony exception (or minimum salary exception).

The way it works is we that we can trade it for a player who makes up to like $15 million without having to add any other players or salary. So if a team decides they want to rebuild but they don't want to take back any salary, they can trade a high priced player in exchange for the TPE along with picks potentially.

As a hypothetical, if Charlotte decided they wanted to trade Al Jefferson ($13.5 million salary) for our TPE plus the Dallas and Clippers picks, we could do that deal and they could save some cash and not have to take back expiring deals, etc.

One point is that the TPE can't be used as part of a package for a super high-priced player. It has to match the salary of an individual player in a transaction.

Looks like we'll need a Vitor appreciation thread as well.

This is good. He's useless anyway. And he's, at best, the 6th big on this roster. I'm also going to guess we'll never see him play another NBA game.

Do people who want Ainge gone not understand how hard it is to build a winning team in the NBA? It's by far the hardest sport to build a team in because of the restrictions and general parity issue. Ainge is pretty damn good all considering. I feel like a lot of guys here may look at the Patriots/Red Sox and see how they can kinda rebuild in one season or completely change their dynamic (Patriots' defense, Sox..whatever), but you can't do that stuff in the NBA. It takes time. Sometimes you get lucky (like we would have with a potential Love trade), and sometimes you have to strap yourself in for the long haul. It's NBA basketball.

Gotta say, though, that you might be able to make small deals with Crowder and Wright this season. Just don't know what you can get back..

God this is depressing. This deal didn't energize a rebuild, it actually deflated our rebuild.

Steve Nash and young Jason Kidd were pretty darn entertaining too.

Look I'm the one who brought it up as a possibility, but considering he hasn't played one game yet and could still potentially walk this summer, I think we can leave the maybe.....

But yes I think he is going to thrive. I think Dirk and Tyson in particular are going to love the guy.

Parsons seems pretty pumped based on those MacMahon tweets

I don't like this trade but I understand it if we didn't want to keep rondo moving forward. To all the people jumping on the Dallas bandwagon, enjoy being a band wagon fan. I'm a Celtics fan. Good luck in Dallas rondo except when you play Boston.

Also, remember that the TPE is only valuable if we actually use it. I gotta scan and see who falls in the range of 12.9 million that might be a trade target this year or next. The clock on that TPE starts as soon as the trade is official.

Maybe you should actually take a look at his numbers.

He is shooting 75 percent, is a solid rebounder and blocks shots. He averages .188 WS/48 for his career. But yeah; you're right. Total scrub.

If he's still shooting 75% when April gets here then I'll be impressed.

No he's not a scrub, but he's not a difference maker either. Maybe Danny can fleece some team into giving up something of value for him like the Mavs did him but I doubt it. At the end of the day he's a 28 year old career backup on an expiring contract.

He shot 68 percent last year. I think it's safe to say he is pretty efficient.

He will make our interior defense better, without question. Again, it sucks that he was the main piece, but meh.

I mean to say I told you so on Rondo's trade value, but I did.

So... lemme just say that if you think "winning" a trade is more important than how a trade fits into the bigger picture, you can probably just stop reading this now, and you won't grasp any of it anyways.

Bottom line is that we are better off now than we were 24 hours ago. If you disagree, it's probably because you were delusional about what Rondo's trade value would be, what his next contract will be and whether or not it was going to be us to pay him that contract.

Ange just made the best of a bad situation, and we will be in a better spot this summer as a result, with another draft pick, a higher lottery pick, more cap room and more possibilities than we were looking at without this deal.

Take it like men. It's what had to be done.

Bye. We don't want you back either.

Especially when we raise Banner 18.

Hopefully all the fake fans leave now, so we can find out who the real fans are who stand by the team through thick and thin.

Lol... This team is ATLEAST 4 yrs from a title, barring a miracle... Where is the optimism for this franchise coming from? Our 'talent' is not wanted anywhere else, we have no bigs and no PG. And our GM has been drafting his fair share of busts aka JR Giddens, Fab Melo etc... Why would anyone come play here? Our cap space is worthless... And we all know how well the lottery works for us... This team is going to be unwatchable

Under-appreciated as of now: Powell might be the 2nd best player in this deal in 2 years if you factor in age and contract.
The leaks are real...the news is fake.

At least it is now time to fully unleash Marcus. Play him 30 mins minimum every game once fit.

Might be good to start as a separate thread for tracking purposes given Ainge's track record of using those TPEs. Although if I recall correctly you can use part of the TPE for a salary below the TPE amount, correct?

Exactly, I enjoyed Rondo's time here but he was a severely flawed player that was looking for big-time money. After Ainge struck out on Love and quickly found out he wasn't gonna be able to find another star we had to move on from Rondo. Not gonna lie i'm relieved that we don't have to hear anymore Rondo trade talk. I'm very curious to see what Ainge is up to, there's no way we can use all of these draft picks. One thing i'm confident of is that if he decides to use all of the 1st's in the draft there's no way he doesn't come away with at least one or two good players.
