Re: Celtics General Regular Season Thread 2019-20, Pt1: aka, Team "Fresh Start"
VERY EARLY almost negligible numbers/rankings:
■ 1st in taking care of the ball; 5th best in forcing turnovers
■ 15th in free throw rate (fantastic considering we were dead last last season) -- thank you Kemba!
■ 2nd most efficient in PnR ballhandlers behind Rockets; significantly increased frequency too from last season
■ 4th most drives per game (4th least last season); now if we can only finish at the rim better lol
■ tops in opponent points off turnovers, 4th best in opponent points in the paint, 6th best in opponent fastbreak points
Which is a good thing. 'Cos we pretty much suck at shooting the ball and rebounding hehe (both bottom third in overall shooting efficiency and rebounding %).

Another really good trend - we are 10th in FTA per game, up from 29th last year and an overall improvement of over 6 attempts per game. If that sustains it is one of the most promising changes of the year.

Having bigs who roll to the hoop and don't just sit out on the 3pt line waiting for a pass helps. A pg who looks for contact instead of dribbles around it helps.
I said it this offseason. kemba has career FTA twice that of Kyrie. Kanter twice that of Horford in less mins. The rookies all took high FTA per college average as well. Tatum worked all offseason on getting to the bucket more and drawing fouls (and he has been getting fouled more then they are calling for sure as well, give it time). So nice not to shoot less free throws every single game.

A really neat thing about the way Kemba gets 30+ points is that you barely noticed he got all those points. He doesn't force things, and he doesn't ball hog. Really refreshing for a guy that good.

All good points, and I’m not worried about Tatum not getting calls yet because it sure looks like he’s just driving wildly and often losing the ball. But it should get better as he gets more reps.
Paul Pierce appreciation society.

Would guys consider going after Tristan Thompson for a big man role if we do get something really nice going with a shot at the championship by the deadline? He's an UFA next offseason, has been ballin' a lot, I don't think the Cavs would ask much for him.

Per sportsrac he's taking 18M this year and will be an UFA in 2020.

Carsen got a haircut. I expect his new aerodynamic look to improve his jumpshot.

They are. I think the concern is that he might leave after this season, especially if he's playing well. If he builds up his value by continuing to play well, he could be a good trade asset vs. the possibility of losing him for nothing a la Kyrie and Al.
no matter how good he plays, a guy who had that injury is unlikely to turn down that much cash. Even removing the fact he's playing for Brad and that's what he really wants to do.
Obviously there will be illegal collusion before he officially opts out and his agent will know what some team will offer. Why would you opt in for 1 year if you can opt out and get 4 years? Only reason is if he sucks this year. We already know he is opting out - barring another injury - because he is really good again.
I guess if I am Hayward I feel bad that I missed 1 full year and played like a end of bench player for a year.
I hope he opts out and gives us a hometown discount for a longer deal.

He should feel bad....because his leg snapped in half?

Celtics players outside of our top 5 (Kemba-Smart-Brown-Tatum-Gordo) are shooting 3 of 32 from beyond the arc. Which is good for holy **** percent. Law of averages dictates they won't miss again this season.

If he keeps playing this well and opts out at the end of the season would we try to resign him or do we let him leave?

Any realistic trades for Drummond? Dude is entering into his prime and is a fricken beast. He would solve all our size and rebounding problems by himself.

More fun with super small sample size! Offensive liability Marcus Smart is 3rd in scoring efficiency as a PnR ballhandler, ahead of Lebron, Lillard, and Kemba (6th). Gordon is 24th among 112 players with at least 10 scoring possessions.
Smart is also tied for 7th (among 277 players) in assist-turnover ratio at 6 assists per 1 turnover.

Would have to include some combo of Brown, Hayward, Smart..

Just Hayward works salary wise. I guess it could be a good deal for us, especially if we think he is going to opt out and leave anyways. But if he wants to stay here it would kind of suck to trade him now just when he finally is playing well again.

I’m sure he does feel bad. But then after his wife, agent, family, friends, NBA colleagues and his own common sense slap him into reality.....he gets down to business and does the smart thing: he opts out and gets the best deal for him.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
