If KG retires, there will be zero cap savings. He's gone, but his salary stays.

Correct. $24.5m will count against the cap the next two years total for KG unless he is traded or bought out. So really the Celtics would have only spent about $1m more for Jordan than they will be for KG. Not really any cap space there.

I'm fine with the trade not going through, but KG still gets paid a lot too. If he is done, I hope the Celtics can get something for him. Jordan I guess isn't the ideal option.

It's either Doc being a sleaze, Sterling being cheap, or their FO being dumb. Maybe all three.

This reminds me of that joke about academic politics- they're so bitter because the stakes are so small. LA frankly is not a favorite even with this deal, and frankly our rebuilding is only marginally faster with Bledsoe and another first, or Terry/Lee gone.

And now Woj is saying it's the Clippers being cheap.. great selling point for Chris Paul!

Ainge is such a thick-skinned *sshole, in a good way. Like he'll sell his own grandmother and then buy her back because he loves her so much..

Why? If he signed a contract then he backs out of his contract by choosing to retire, then the contract should become void.

Either way, DJ at $13 million was not worth it.

If Paul ends up seriously considering going else where, and the Clippers come crawling back to try and make the trade...If I'm Ainge, I DEMAND Bledsoe next time around if they wanna talk again

We don't have to pay him, but the cap hit stays on the books because he technically could come back at any time.

We could agree to a buyout with him, of course. If he voluntary retires, I believe we get immediate relief.

The only exception to this is when a player is still under contract, wants to quit, and his team doesn't want to let him out of his contract. Under these circumstances the player can file for retirement with the league. The player is placed on the league's Voluntarily Retired list (see question number 77), forgoes his remaining salary, and cannot return to the league for one year. The latter requirement prevents players from using retirement as an underhanded way to change teams, and can be overridden with unanimous approval from all 30 teams. For example, guard Jason Williams signed with the LA Clippers in August 2008, then changed his mind the following month, announcing his retirement. He applied for reinstatement in early 2009, but his request was denied by a vote of 24-6. Williams later signed with the Orlando Magic once the one-year anniversary of his retirement announcement had passed.

If LA wants a hall of fame Power Forward and a big name star coach that will guarantee your franchise player to resign, giving up an Eric Bledsoe and a late 1st isn't that big of a deal.

Teams that don't want to win, don't make these types of deals. Case and point for the Clippers.

Losing teams fall in love with their binkies....picks and young players. Danny cashed in his binkies in 2007 and we got an NBA Championship in return.

Well, look on another side, Doc was able to have contact with Chris Paul without tampering.
He could have sold him on coming to the Celtics. As the Clippers are to cheap to contend.

There would be a KG buyout if he retires. Cap hit could be spread out over up to 5 years.

Well guys...if this is not going down...which it doesn't seem to be. What the hell is the team doing? We're the 3rd best team in the division now and coming off a first round exit with an aging team going no where. I guess the hope is what now? No one is willing to give any value for KG but the Clippers. I'd honestly rather KG just retire and buyout Pierce...get nothing in return for them...then have another wasted year repeat of last season.

Glad that Danny didn't just take a crappy deal for the sake of doing a deal.

DA fails to get anything for 3 major assets due to his stubbornness. Golf clap...

People really think KG will retire? I mean one moment he's willing to be traded to LAC to compete for a title and the next he doesn't want to play basketball anymore? That doesn't seem to make any sense.

KG is either going to request a trade and expand his list of destinations or he'll be back in Green.

Forget the Clippers. No more trade talks with them.

Besides I like Rondo better than CP3. Rondo is a warrior during the playoffs.

There was no trade in there unless it provided us with the assets or ability to do a sign-and-trade.

Taking on a trade kicked DJ and the 25th pick was worse than doing nothing.

Right. He has more basketball in him, and wouldn't be surprised to see KG become more open to other teams with more willingness to win...

How come CP3 gets a pass that Melo, Deron, and LeBron didn't?
