Saw Towns' mom passed away from COVID 19 complications. Stay safe guys!!! The virus is not a joke. In Spain, thousands of people have died the past 10 days...

On a side note, I miss basketball.
Good assessment:

800 people have died a day for the last week and a half in New York alone.

Honestly, if that is DuckTales Scrooge and not like early Scrooge where he was a total ****, he would probably go on some cool adventure, discover a miracle cure, and sell it to make a quick billion and save the world in the process.

Lots of people still think it is, that's why I said it's not. My pops is in Spain and the situation there is scary...

Hope everybody is okay, I love basketball, but this is bigger.

Btw, I have followed the situation in the US and especially NY as soon as it started, I'm praying for you guys. Hope everything comes back to normal soon.

edit: In Bulgaria it has been fairly calm, but people do seem super careless and it's a matter of time before they realize the truth.

I was talking to my wife and we grew up in Connecticut and Massachusetts coincidentally. Both our families spent time in both spots and we went to college in Worcester and boston, that's where we met...but my high school had about 1100 people in it. 1100. 800 a day dying in new york... that's like almost my entire high school dying everyday...and that's just one state.

This **** is scary and my.dads still going to home depot like it's a joke.

Yep. Scary part about Bulgaria is that we're literally a 3rd world country from Eastern Europe. If this gets big here, lots of people will die unattended and alone. Most people don't understand that at all and think it's a scheme to **** with their pocket, which could be true in a way, but the virus is very real.

A couple of my smarter friends, who work in microbiology and biopharm, are increasingly optimistic that this is going to fizzle out soon. There's increasing evidence that the asymptomatic/mild infection rate is far, far higher than realized, which in turn makes the mortality rate much smaller, and the herd immunity far more widespread.

Big if true. I’m waiting on these antibody test results and figuring good news could break there soon if we’re lucky.

And a month at home has been cool and all but we really need to get back to **** on each other.

In the absence of widespread immunity than we think, we're kind of stuck in a catch 22 right up until oh I don’t know November.

That would be good. I do wonder about it, I've had a mild cough for 3 weeks since returning from interstate (in Australia) but no other real symptoms. I don't really think I have it but if that's true, maybe I and many others do too.

On a global level, regardless of whether countries locked down completely, somewhat, or not very much at all, the exponential growth seems to flatten at 6-8 weeks. This is not to say that the lockdowns are a waste, as they clearly save many lives, just that the *continued* exponential growth may not be there. Meaning that there *may* already be more natural immunity than suspected, and that early indications are that the worst case scenarios *may* be less likely, and that subsequent waves *may* not have be as bad as feared.

It's all extrapolation and perhaps wishful thinking at this point, but there are an increasing number of data points that are trending well.

Meaning it moves through the population swiftly, most people are fine, and the number of deaths reflect how swiftly the virus moves and finds vulnerable bodies, not how deadly it is as it gradually progresses through the population... ?

It focuses mostly in Africa, however there's also some info like this:

To be sure, Africa is not suffering as much as many expected – at least not so far. Though the number of affected countries on the continent has risen to 43, the virus does not seem to be spreading as rapidly as it has elsewhere.

Some scientists think this could be partly a matter of climate. One study found that the COVID-19 virus may be less stable at higher temperatures, with the optimal temperature for transmission probably hovering around 8.72°C. Temperatures in most African countries rarely drop below 15°C. This does not mean that the COVID-19 virus cannot be transmitted in hotter climates, only that it may be easier to contain there.

8.72 degrees Celsius is approx. 48 degrees Fahrenheit.

Could seasonal temperature shifts be a reason for the seemingly flattening curve?

Wondering from stories like this if climate change activism needs to shift emphasis from “wake up morons the world is ending” to selling more of the benefits of green/sustainable technology - clean air, quiet roads and cities, beautiful natural ecosystems, more places to hunt and fish and hike and swim, healthier people with fewer costly medical problems, energy independence and international leverage, new jobs, new inventions with multiple uses.. and insurance against bad weather, flooding, diseases, global instability..

I don't know but I don't think so. Right now where I am the median daily temperature seems to be around 8-9 degrees (i.e., the virus's preferred temperature) and it appears that we are beginning to flatten the curve.
