He was not referring to signing Brown and it isn't about guys like Javonte Green whom he could have already signed. He passed on players making $4.6 million per like Jalen McDaniels and Josh Richardson who would have definitely helped and I don't think it was just about the 2nd apron.
IMO there is something more happening. Whether it's a player they is waiting for a certain date he can be traded or something bigger, this is not about a free agent minimum player who they would have snapped up alreqdy.

You might be right.

But I think there's also a chance you're reading too deeply into an off the cuff quote by Brad. I mean, "we need to finish the roster right" could mean pretty much anything. It's extremely vague, so probably not worth trying to decipher it.

And it's also best to not read too deeply into what GM's say anyways. Brad is stealth, he doesn't want to tip his hand, which would result in losing leverage when negotiating with other team's GMs. Or if it gets out there that he is interested in a certain player or a certain type of player, then perhaps another team will then jump on that player and snatch them from under our nose.

I mean, he told Marcus he was safe, and then traded him a week later. The warriors GM said publicly that Jordan Poole would be there long term, and then he was traded right after that. GM's are like politicians - they lie a lot.

Lastly, I'm not sure I agree with the notion that we're not gonna sign a FA like Javonte because if we were, we would have done it by now. I mean, we signed Griffin right before training camp last year. Things change, and evolve over the course of the offseason. Who knows, maybe Javonte (or Danny Green or whoever) is waiting to see if he gets a better offer from another team. And Brad is waiting to see if a better player agrees to sign with us - or waiting to see if a Brogdon/Pritchard deal ends up happening - or perhaps the JB extension held things up before and now that that's done, now Brad could sign that player that he would have signed earlier.

It seems like we've hit a point in the offseason where not much is happening. Front office execs are probably taking vacations, and then we'll start to see some more FA signings, exhibit 10's and 2-way slots filled in august/september.

Who knows, "finishing out the roster right" could absolutely mean just adding adding 1 more decent role player on a minimum contract. Someone to add some depth and be a good locker room guy.

Yeah that's kind of why I liked that Burks idea. Not likely at all that he gets waived, but he sort of fits that mold of an additional guy off the bench that also is not totally meaningless.

Last summer he said they were adding one more big man and it was Noah Vonleh so that was a little anti-climactic.

Everyone knows I've been saying this all summer, I think Brogdon is eventually moved.

I highly doubt the Celtics keep White/Brogdon/Pritchard/Banton. I think one of them gets moved and I think it's going to be Brogdon once player restrictions end for players on other teams. Another thing, whether you like the player or not there were rumors from Mark Jones (respected NBA Sac TV guy) that the Celtics had strong interest in Terence Davis. Davis would probably require the MLE which the Celtics can't use without moving salary. Terence Davis has not signed with anyone.

Last week, Celtics came out strong to other teams that Brogdon was not available. Could be true but it also could be because they have another deal in place and are waiting for restrictions to be lifted. Wouldn't surprise me if Brogdon is traded for a player(s) and a draft pick and then the Celtics sign someone like Terence Davis.

or the Celtics are not moving Brogdon. We all just have to wait and see.

IDK. Davis isn't a PG. He's an undersized wing.

The question becomes, who are you trading Brogdon for? It better be someone really good. Because Davis is probably not going to be much of a factor in the playoffs. So if you're trading the 6MOY, a knock down shooter, a guy who can play on or off the ball, who's got a year under his belt with the team to build chemistry, who are you getting? Pritchard and Banton for backup PG's probably won't cut it. Pritchard is more of a 2 on offense and is kind of a liability on defense. Banton was a late 2nd round pick and has not played very much during his 2 NBA seasons - he's just an end of the bench flier - Brad has been quoted saying how he likes our back court and has mentioned that white, brogdon and Pritchard will all have a role - he did not mention Banton so he probably will just be an end of the bench guy.

Lastly, we shouldn't just dismiss the character red flags with Davis. Not all of the charges were dropped in his case:
https://www.raptorshq.com/2021/2/19/22291256/nba-news-terence-davis-domestic-assault-charges-dropped

The incident was less than 3 yrs ago - so fairly recent.

As the article points out, "5 of the 7 charges against Davis were dismissed, relating to assaultive conduct. The Family ACD applies to 2 remaining counts: Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Mischief in the 4th Degree."

Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

Celtics are fine with White/Pritchard/Banton as point guards. Celtics have strong interest in Terence Davis according to Mark Jones which means the Celtics are fine with his past otherwise they wouldn't have interest.

In my opinion, having something like Pritchard, Davis, Olynyk and a draft pick is better than having Brogdon. Like I said, we will see. You have your opinion and I have mine. I think there is less than 5% chance Brogdon is on the Celtics after the mid season trade deadline.

When Brad said "we need to finish the roster right," he obviously meant we were trading for Delon Wright. No other interpretation needed.

And Pritchard is on the team either way.

So you're basically saying you think this team gets closer to banner 18 by trading Brogdon for Olynyk. Olynyk would be our 4th big so likely wouldn't even be in the playoff rotation. I doubt we trade for Olynyk, and pay him $12 mil a year to be the 4th big. And he's on an expiring contract, too.

Brogdon for Olynyk doesn't work in the trade machine anyways. Jazz would have send out another $3.5 mil or so in salary..

Guess he’s not already better than Kornet, but do agree he has some potential to show up in the NBA.

I wouldn’t hold your breath on this — each summer there’s a poster or a few who are sure Brad “isn’t done” (all caps) — and usually, yeah, he is. I was kind of expecting Pritchard to get dealt and replaced with a vet min guy, but seems less likely that they’d wait this long.

It’s the “off”-est part of the offseason. Vacation time. Enjoy it!

Since Brown and Tatum started playing together the Celtics have 3rd highest winning%, most ECF appearances, second or third highest playoff wins and playoff series won. Imagine if the Patriots came to the conclusion that Brady/Belechek would never win anything after failing to win it all between 2007 and 2015.

Maybe it's for the best. My understanding is that we would have had to buy out his Overseas Contract, anyway.

So JB is on the level of a Brady or Belichick now? What a weird comparison.

Since we’re talking basketball after all, they’re closer to DeRozan/Lowry or if you want to be generous KD/Westbrook (except their Tatum walked to join a superteam and their JB stayed). Tatum has less incentive to walk now because he’s already in a great market and he’ll get the supermax but he can always ask for a trade after signing.

No need to use the Patriots as an example. They could be compared to the Nuggets, who had the patience of waiting for the team to be fully healthy at the right time (something Cs haven’t had the luck of being — Tatum banged up in the Finals, JB banged up last ECF w/ Tatum rolling his ankle in game 7.), stuck with the same core, and finally broke through after Jokic/Murray 7 years together.

Your condescending tone is not appreciated. Of course other players need to be involved. The main point is getting 2-3 very good players in place of Brodgon is a better way to go for the Celtics in my opinion. Brogdon's defense in the playoffs against Atlanta, Philly and Miami was a straight out embarrassment (just ask Eddie House, google it). You can disagree, it's your right.

In my opinion, this is the way the Celtics are going to go. I am not expecting Brogdon to be on the Celtics past the mid season trade deadline (if not sooner).

Another closer comp…

Maybe the Smart trade for Porzingis is our Bledsoe trade for Jrue Holiday and KP is the third star missing piece to get us over the top.

But in both comps, the hope is Tatum reaches Jokic/Giannis level the next couple of years.

EDIT: In both cases, Nuggets and Bucks had a veteran coach.

Of course anything at this point is speculation, but the female announcer was praising how much the Celtics had already done. She wasn't asking if there was more to do.
I certainly don't expect Stevens to make a hasty move. But I think he knows that the roster needs depth and the player(s) will be significant.

Certainly trading Brogdon could be part of this. My concern would be getting the right value for him after what the Clippers did.

Perhaps. But idk if we really need to add anything significant at this point. We're currently the favorites to win the title:

If we do make some big move, great but I think just maybe adding 1 more solid role player vet off the bench on a minimum contract is fine.
Nothing wrong with having a different opinion - as long as it's done respectfully. It'd be lame if we all agreed on everything :)

The Patriots are a New England team and there were plenty of detractors in 2014. The Patriots between 2007 and 2014 had tremendous success with 2 failed Super Bowl appearances and many winning seasons - yet they fell short of the ultimate goal - much like the Celtics of the last 5 years. I think it’s a valid point to suggest it is idiotic and very weird to want to break up the core of a winning team with young talent that is potentially on the verge of greater succcess.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."
