Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, Tom Heinsohn and Larry Bird each became members of the Celtics in ways that would not be possible today. Explain.

Here's another somewhat open-ended one -- which Hall of Fame players left the Celtics and played for another NBA team, and how did they leave? At the moment I'm only thinking of four, only one of whom I think was actually traded away. But Pierce and Garnett will of course add to the list some day.

Well I know Red drafted Bird but then he didn't sign and went back to Indiana State. They changed the rules not long after that to I assume stop teams drafting players before they declared. Did the same thing happen for the other guys?

Tom Heinsohn was teritorial pick...Cousy in dispersal draft...Russell pick was some kind of compensation...

Ed Macauley was traded for Russell, Bob Houbregs waived. Bailey Howell lost in expansion draft. Bob McAdoo traded to Pistons. Nate Archibald waived and sign with Bucks i believe. Cowens retired but later had a comeback and was traded to Bucks for Quinn Buckner. Robert Parish left as a FA for Hornets. Dominique Wilkins left to Panathinaikos Athens in Europe. Gary Payton left as a FA for Heat.

Did Bob Cousy brief cameo with Cinncinati counts?

Longer list than mine, but not everybody you mentioned belongs on it.

My list was Russell, Cousy, Archibald, Parish.

I had a feeling about Cowens being traded or having a comeback or something, but got lazy and didn't look it up. I didn't think of Howell. Good job on those.

But I'm not sure everybody you mentioned is actually in the HoF. Unless you are sure yourself, you might want to recheck McAdoo (long on the bubble, I think), Nique (ditto), Payton (not eligible yet), and Houbregs (not in the main HoF). Also, I was talking about other NBA teams only, so Nique might not count in any case; lots of guys play basketball in some capacity or other after they leave the NBA.

Correct in all cases. Does anybody want to give more details, especially for the Russell story?

In 1956. Celtics had a third pick of the draft. Rochester Royals picked first and St. Louis Hawks second.
Red Auerbach wanted Bill Russell but he know he wouldn't last until third pick. Also, back then there was teritorial picks when teams could select local stars. But to exercise that, team must forfeit their regular pick. So Auerbach forteit third pick for right to select Holy Cross star Tommy Heinsohn.
Auerbach then went to St.Louis and offered perrenial all-star Ed Macauley, St.Louis native and prized rookie Cliff Hagan for 2nd pick.
When St.Louis accepted the deal, then Auerbach goes to Rochester. Royals had a budding star big men Maurice Stokes...but they were a cheap franchise. Then Celtics owner Walter Brown steered Ice Capades for two years from Boston to Rochester as a compensation that Royals don't select Russell. They accepted, select high scoring college guard Sihugo Green and the rest is history

How you have Russell on your list? He played only for Celtics. Bob McAdoo was selected in 2000., Dominique Wilkins in 2006 (he goes to Europe, but played later in San Antonio and Orlando). Bob Houbregs was selected 1987. And Gary Payton was selected in 2013.
I'm covering the Celtics since 1986. Have a ton of Celtics books and ALOT of statistics regarding Celtics (sorry, i'm stats freak :) )
So i really don't see a flaw in my answer.

Only 18 regular season? Wow. I didn't realize they missed that many opportunities due to injury.

Of course, this could be a trick question if the All-Star game is to be counted. :)

Hay, guys...
Anyone interested to keep playing this game?
If so...i have a question.
I played in the NBA for 10 seasons.
My scoring average was falling each year...from best as a rookie to worst as a 10-year vet
I played in 4 NBA all-star games.
I played for Celtics too
Who am I ?
There's only one statistics that's important: who won...Bill Russell
