Both of which would greatly impede their ability to build a contender around Love.

They also only have 1 tradable pick, a late 1st in 2015, and no expirings. David Lee would have to be routed to a 3rd team for expirings, which is possible, but not a given. In sum, they have significant challenges in this IMO.

I agree with you here. Their ownership seems willing to try to make moves like this but I just see them having a hard time pulling off a deal acceptable to MN.

Its obvious he is here for basketball reasons. Wyc mentioned there will be "Fireworks". It all makes sense. But from what Flip is saying is pretty much calling us fans delusional. According to him Love is 100% staying.

People who are not sure about Love. Well anytime you can get 26ppg and 12rbg consistently you go after that guy at all costs.

With Rondo and Love and hopefully a strong Center Celtics can easily be top 3 team in the east.

Flip is just saying what needs to be said. It looks like MN must still be negotiating with teams. Most likely means he is gone on draft day since around that time gives MN the most leverage.

MN is crazy to think that Love won't walk out the door after another losing season... It puts tremendous pressure on the Wolves to really improve next year and they aren't in great position to do so.

I think if the team gives permission to another team to talk and work out a deal, then i think it's allowed. Not sure though.

Probably true, but why would the Timberwolves willingly agree to let their prize trade asset talk to another team about signing there as a free agent in the following offseason?

because talks have progressed to the point where Love needs to sign off on it

We still have our fair share of celebrity kryptonite.

I was waiting at the Culver City DMV a few years ago when Dennis Quaid comes in and makes a beeline for the open seat next to me...

And then from behind me some half-drunk guy bellowed out "QUAID" at the top of his lungs.

Hairpin turn and he was out the door.

Slart do you live over in Culver/West Side? I'm living in the Culver/Palms area at the moment.

Simple math - it HAS to go down before the draft. MIN is going to want to control who is selected. This is all posturing to get final bids in - MIN just "put missles in Turkey" - they signaled an escalation with this weekend's fun.

It sounds like you are talking about Love signing off on a trade, in which case there has been a misunderstanding. I strongly believe that the purpose of Love's visit is that the Timberwolves and Celtics are very close to agreeing on a trade Love is now checking out Boston because the Timberwolves let him know so he can decide whether or not he would sign off on such a trade trade. Some posters have brought up the alternate (I believe highly improbable) possibility that Love has come to Boston to discuss free agency plans for 2015. My contention is that the Timberwolves would not allow their prize trade asset to talk to the Celtics about his future free agency plans while he is still under contract and that the Celtics and Love talking about 2015 free agency without the Timberwolves' permission would put the Celtics at risk of being punished for tampering. Therefore, I hope they are discussing a trade and not free agency because I don't want the Celtics to be punished.

Its about time we get a young All Star stud. KL is only 25. With all due respect to KG we got him towards the end of his prime. How about we get a good player in his youth for once. I bet LeBron James goes to Boston when he, s 37.

Its LOVE or nothing. Danny knows if he doesnt bring an All Star stud he will be having hard time keeping Rondo.

If Melo makes it clear he isn't going to stay, Phil will take the best deal and like it. He's a smart guy. He knows the Knicks have no assets and no future right now. He's not going to turn down the best offer he gets if it just happens to come from the division. That's more an issue in fans minds than in GMs minds.

That being said, I'm not certain we'll have the best offer by then depending on what we'd hypothetically give up for Love. Sounds like the Knicks are targeting the Bucks or Sixers draft pick in a trade. Maybe they figure they can trade Melo away and get back Wiggins or Parker.

Melo can really force the issue, though. Tell Knicks to trade him to Boston for picks and expirings or he signs with someone else and leaves them with nothing. We can even take Felton for them, helping them to clear the decks for cap room next summer. Sign-and-trade gets balanced by resigning Hump to 1yr/13m, which he would probably be happy to take.

I get the feeling that Phil would probably rather start from scratch anyways. He's that type of ego

Not anymore. Bailed for the OC (cheaper, my wife works in Orange) when my job relocated to Long Beach.

Loved Culver City though.

If Love was here with the Wolves blessing, it's because they're hoping he'll decide to opt in or sign an extension.. that way they can squeeze a little more out of the Celtics.

If Minny had no say in this trip, it likely means Love's just flirting with us as he can see hooking up with us down the way.

Both scenarios bode well for us, just one moreso.

I'm just curious, when something like this (trade rumors) blows up out of proportion where everybody talks about it, has their hopes up, etc.; does it succeed eventually or is it that most deals are kept hidden? How was it with KG and Ray in 2007? Did it blow up towards the end of those deals or like this, when everything is just starting?

And yeah, Baxter Holmes just tweeted this:

Not surprising, but @kevinlove just followed @davidortiz on twitter.

No doubt, but also something to be said for having three max cap room slots, or an appropriately resigned Melo and two max cap room slots. Shoot, they could sign Love and Rondo outright if things shake out correctly. If Melo wasn't the 3rd, it could be Marc Gasol. Aldridge and Hibbert also UFAs next year. If Miami's big 3 opted in this summer for one more run, add them to the list.

That's my point - Phil is, well, Phil. And he's in NY. AND he's looking at MAX MAX cap space if Melo is gone.

I believe Ray Allen was one of those Jru Holiday draft day type deals. It just kind of happened, popped up on ESPN out of nowhere. I remember lurking around the board and there was no mention of Ray Allen here during that day. People were pissed off at Danny saying he should be fired if he didn't have another move because Pierce and Ray alone wouldn't get the job done. I believe the Ray deal came out of the blue and from that moment on everybody started looking at KG even though rumor was that he had ruled Boston out as a destination a while before. I'm not so sure it's exactly how it went down, so don't quote me on this. It's just the way I remember it happening. There really wasn't as much social media hype back then also so it's tough to compare both situations.

As for that tweet, man if Kevin Love doesn't come to Boston this dude is the biggest **** troll in the history of Sports. He's hinting in every single way possible that he's coming..

I think it's the latter, but it would still be in a trade this summer. Flip didn't sound too happy, lol. But if Love is on board with it, we can seriously start putting the screws to Minny here. Because we have the ability to get to max cap room next summer, while still fielding a promising supporting cast, Love can threaten them with signing with us as a FA next summer. Can still get his $20m a year while joining a team that had Rondo, Sullinger, Bradley, Olynyk, the 6 and 17 picks, all of the 2015 picks, both 2016 picks, the 2017 pick swap and both 2018 picks. Would just need to give Green away and perhaps stretch Wallace.

Love can further threaten to kill any and all trades during his last year in Minny, just as stars like Chris Paul and Melo have done in recent years. This would effectively kill the market for him. If those teams are being told by him of his intention to sign with Boston in 2015, there's no way they risk giving up a Klay Thompson or the #1 in the draft this year.

Delays us by a year, but Minny would have to take that threat very, very seriously if it meant they were turning down an offer based around #6, Sully, cap relief and an extra couple of picks in favor of either potentially losing him for nothing, or at best taking a completely weak offer from another team that has been told by Love not to deal for him.

If Love is willing to essentially collude with us, this is extraordinary leverage to employ on Minny. Similar to what Melo did to the Nuggets with the Knicks, but given that Melo needed to force a trade to NY before the new CBA kicked in to get his max extension, it's even worse for Minny.

In sum, with Love's help, we could (a) destroy the trade market for him, and (b) force Minny to take 60 cents on the dollar, as opposed to the 40 cents another team would offer, or the 0 cents they would get if he just walks away in free agency next summer.

Is all of that realistic? You tell me. His agent, who also represents Pierce and who knows Ainge very well, just helped to arrange a weekend-long dog-and-pony show around Boston, where Love visited with current Celtics and other assorted Boston athletes.

I'd say Flip Saunders has a right to be pissed off right about now, LMAO.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/ ... story.html

But over the next few hours, the two talked plenty about Boston and the Celtics.

“It went great,” Fairweather told the Globe on Sunday. “The kid is a real gentleman. I think he has a real appreciation with the Celtics’ history and tradition.”

Love, who averaged 26.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game last season, learned Celtics history at an early age, as one of his favorite tapes growing up was a VHS copy of “Winning Basketball” with Larry Bird and Red Auerbach.

And of his youth, Love once told Sports Illustrated in an interview, “My dad likes to say when other kids were watching Big Bird, I was watching Larry Bird, and he was totally right.”

Fairweather, a former ESPN producer and radio co-host, found Love to be so interested in Celtics history that he gave him a 90-minute DVD that details the team’s illustrious past, a gift Fairweather said Love very much appreciated.

In the area where the two talked, the walls surrounding them were decorated with banners from championships won by local teams. But there was one bare spot.

And before Love left that night, Fairweather pointed to that spot and told Love that they would fill it with a championship banner that the Celtics won with him.

Props to you Mr Fairweather.. doing your bit!
