So, I'm taking June, July, and August off this summer to backpack. I've been an avid hiker most of my life, but my knees have gotten pretty bad lately, and I'm not sure how many more seasons I have in me (to do the big stuff, anyway), so I plan on taking making time to really scratch the itch over the next couple of years. (Fortunately, I work in an industry where I have absurd ability to manipulate my schedule, so my only real constraint is how much time I can actually afford to take.)
My tentative plans for this summer include:
- Some time in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, including, hopefully, a Presidential Traverse (though that may turn out to be beyond my pain threshold at this point).
- Attempting to do as many of the 30 Colorado 14ers I still have to finish as possible (in about five weeks, so the odds are very much against me).
- Finishing with the John Muir Trail in the Sierras in August. (If all goes well, I might make an attempt at the entire PCT next season, as my big last hurrah.)
I've never been much of a photographer - my thought has always been that if it's worth remembering, I'll remember it. But, I'm probably going to change that philosophy this year, since several people in my life are nudging me to take pictures this time around. If I come up with anything that seems worth sharing, I might put it here. Though, I expect my internet access will be spotty at best, after I leave NH.
And if September rolls around and I haven't posted anything in a few months, then I probably legitimately fell to my death. Or was eaten by a bear. (Or went full Pogue.)

I am 44, married with a toddler...yes older than average parentWork for the US Forest Service currently living in Nevada.Been a celtic fan all my life for no apparent reason,I guess because my Dad was a huge fan and growing up in Idaho, Jazz fans seemed really annoying. Favorite Cs player was Reggie Lewis. in the early 90s I was playing a lot of pick up basketball, and modeled my go to moves after Reggie...even though I was 5'10" 175
Ha, similarities here. 43, married with 7 and 4 yo kids. Just started working with, but not for, the Forest Service in CA. What do you do for them?
Nice.
I am a District Recreation / Wilderness / Trails staff. Work on the Carson RD, Humboldt Toiyabe N.F....just east of Lake Tahoe. Where are you at?
Cool, didn't realize this forum had fs connections. If I get through this summer alive, I might be contemplating a career change. Might try to pick your brains a little...

Pics are a must for your family and friends. I had a buddy ride his bike from the most northern accessible town in Alaska all the way to Houston. Left in June and finished in October. He kept a blog going and following it was like watch a TV series. Here it is if anyone want to take a peak. It is pretty cool.

Only glimpsed at a couple of pages so far, pretty neat. Definitely not helping my itchy feet.
The older I get, the farther and farther I get from anything remotely like wanting to settle down. There are so many places to go...
