This thread is a good idea as it is definitely interesting getting some back stories to the regulars on here. 8-)

When I was in the army, we did a joint special operations training exercise with Australian troops from Campbell Barracks (WA) at Bindoon. We got to go to Perth but that was it. I would love to go back and visit Australia again but as a civilian, of course.

I would highly recommend it if you get a chance. It is a beautiful country and a great place to visit, it is just a long way to come and long way to travel around once you get here. You have to fly between all the main parts unless you want to be driving for days.

I live on the east coast and have only been to Perth once, it is a great city and that part Western Australia is beautiful, great beaches except there can be issues with Great Whites.

LOL. Columbia has its characters, but less so in the professional schools where it is a feeder for wall street and top law firms. I'm trying not to get political, but let's just say I resent the rhetoric aimed at "the 1%." I think envy and entitlement are my two biggest pet peeves besides Sheed.

Let's just say we will be voting the same way in November.

Here you guys go ruining a friendly thread. The difference between Harvard and Williams/Amherst is that Harvard is a global institution with the best and brightest from the entire world, and not just from American children of privilege. Probably has something to do with why they graduate Presidents, and Williams/Amherst graduate hedge fund managers and English majors. Also probably has something to do with why "entitlement" in this context only refers to the people who are against a corrupt status quo that is gamed to consolidate wealth among the elite, rather than towards those who prefer to keep that system in place.

I'm politically moderate and unaffiliated to any party, just sick to death of this attitude and Republicans whining about how Democrats choose to pay off the massive deficits that Reagan and Bush created.

Carry on.

Sheesh, Caveman. I just agreed with Grant. I was minimally political.

PS I was not raised in a family of privilege. And the reason my alma mater, Williams, was selected as the best institution of higher learning in America by Forbes Magazine & the votes of every Dean in the
USA in June 2011 was because it has produced an enormous number of extremely accomplished people in every possible profession. It still beats the **** out of me why they selected a dummy like me. It must have been because 1) I am so frigging handsome; and 2) the majority of the Admissions Committee were Celtic fans.

All good. I don't think Harvard is overrated, though. Williams is OK, but from my own experience, outside of Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Stanford/MIT/etc, I have been more impressed with the people I have known from the top military and engineering schools than I have been with most of the top private liberal arts schools. Not to say that they aren't "learned", just that they tend to be more ivory tower, more narrow and less curious thinkers.

Vote for whoever you like though, even if it is a true Harvard guy like Mitt, lol.

Maine is nice in the summer. I like taking the drive up to Portland. Should really catch a red claws game. 2nd favorite state next to Massachusetts. I haven't really spent that much time in Rhode Island though.

Cave,

I am going to listen to what Barry & Mitt have to say very carefully. However, I am probably 95% decided. I am going to write-in Paul Pierce.

All good, brother. Didn't mean to come down so hard over the alma mater thing. Funny thing is, if you can get down past all the election politics to who they really are and what they really believe, I think there is a very central debate to be had about who we are and who we want to be between Mitt and Obama, (and to a much lesser extent IMO, between Newt and Obama). They are both far from extreme, left to their own devices. Center-right vs center-left. They are also both highly intelligent guys, irregardless of where and how they were educated.

Given that my political ideology is competence, the bigger question to me is who is better at pulling the levers. That's a open question, of course, but like you, I already have a pretty good idea.

But this thread isn't for all that. Everyone just make sure to vote and be cool to each other. No sense getting bent. Sh-t will decided by maybe 20m moderate voters in 10-12 purple states neither of us lives in, same as always, lol.

Cave,

You nailed it.

My state (MD) is going democrat no matter how I decide to vote. Your state (?MA?) = same thing.

Independents like us living in purple states will determine the outcome of the election as always - as you stated.

I am not at all concerned about my Williams vs. Harvard regarding who has bigger balls. Both schools are creme de la creme. I stopped giving money to Williams when they wait-listed my brilliant younger
daughter. She ended up getting the same outstanding education for 1/3 the cost at UVA. I also agree that the people I have known educated at West Point & Annapolis have been truly remarkable people. Furthermore, myself excluded - :0), the smartest endocrinologist I have had the privilege to collaborate
with went to Kansas State/U of Kansas (Truth's alma mater), i.e. many times, it is the individual & not the school, that "drives the ship."

All that said, Go Green forever!!!!

However, we have guys like me who have posted for almost 10 years or even longer.

We have an artificial but unique bond.

Went to college in Boston, living in CT now, where I grew up- have B.A. & M.A. in English, hoping to get into a PhD program this spring- toiling at present as an adjunct.

Became a real Celtics fan around 1996- although before that, I was a kid but knew vaguely who Bird, Mchale (guy on Cheers), Parish were, enough to imitate LB in my driveway- and the Celtics used to play a few home games in Hartford, CT, so I saw them around '92 or '93, but remember Shaq, Grant Hill from those games the best.

No Celtics access on TV at that point, so I cut my basketball fan teeth on Knicks' games, and the constant Jordan coverage on NBC. Eventually we started getting the C's away games on cable, with Mike and Tommy, and I watched a bunch of them during the M.L. Carr tanking season- I wanted to qualify as a legit fan, so I thought it was a good idea to really start following the team at their worst to avoid bandwagon fair-weather guilt. I definitely got that covered- Carr, Pitino, Wallace, Antoine, Ricky Davis, Vin Baker, Billups for Anderson, Declerq, Potapenko, etc. etc. etc.

Loved living in Boston, still long for the drunk-college-kid food in the BU/Allston area (Sicilia's stuffed pizzas, especially) Huge film lover, working my way through a box of Stanley Kubrick films at present, though my tastes span wider than that.. Etc. etc.

But we'll always share the draft night when the celtics got the Harangutan

Speaking of draft nights, I was at the one when we drafted Moiso.

Tommy was the first guy at the bar. Monster of a man. His wife was very nice, may she RIP.

When Keyon Dooling got drafted just ahead of us, everyone got pissed. That was their guy, and everyone connected with the team knew it. They were straight-up whatever at draft Moiso, openly mocking him and pretty much just cursing about it all, LOL.
