I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Celts draft a defensive guard ( Brown from Miami ?) as a hedge against Smart leaving . There is only one Marcus Smart in the nba
"Now, there's a steal by Bird..!"

Money, while it has it's perks, becomes meaningless, after a certain point.
These guys want to Win -- Championships.
How many people, have taken lesser money, to come here?
Baynes, Larkin, Theis.
Rookies, have Delayed their NBA careers, to be Celtics' Stashes.
Yabusele, Žižić, Nader.
KG -- had a No-Trade Clause.
He HAD to agree to be Traded here. And, to be Traded away, for the Benefit of the Team.
Marcus Smart, may Want more money. -- Who doesn't?
But, when the Chips come down to it. -- He's not leaving. Not over Money.
Get that out of your Head.
Even Benedict Ray Allen, took a pay cut, to slap it in our Face.
Money?
When you make it to the NBA, you got money.
They want that Ring.

I think Smart’s chance of a big contract with the Celtics went out the window when he punched that picture frame.

It would suck if he went to Philly or Indi. The other teams would not really hurt the Cs.
One risk is that he takes a deal somewhere like KCP’s, 1 year, 18 million. In which case we probably give KCP a contract..
LA, Philly and Dallas have other targets.. Atlanta is trying to cut salary - hoping they send Schroeder to Indiana so the Pacers don’t go after Marcus. Sacramento has Fox..
I love Smart, even if he never fixes his shot, he’s a huge part of the team, he belongs here, it’s a great, winning situation - and he should be grateful he’s gotten so much run to develop while shooting one of the lowest percentages in the league.
If he leaves Boston over two million dollars a year, he’s going to make Ray Allen look like Red Auerbach.

Golden State has 4 guys who could make max or close to max. Their fifth starter used to be a franchise guy and makes 14 million. After that, exit guy makes 8 million. How does Boston justify more than 6 million QO for a guy who is 6th man because 2 best players on IR? He is 8th best guy.....7th best if they trade Rozier. No way he gets paid more than QO by Celtics.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
Back when he didn't sign an extension his agent was making noise (and not generating any good will) about how a) Danny hadn't made an offer at first, and b) that when he did and they couldn't agree, it was gonna cost the Cs a lot more money next summer. So, it's not like he hasn't been money motivated in his negotiations to date.
He says all the right things about not caring about starting or anything but winning, but we know he's super competitive and can see himself getting pushed down the totem pole by every acquisition - after being a #6 pick himself: IT, then Brown, then Hayward, then Kyrie, then Tatum, now even Rozier. He might be willing to take extra money and get out from under all that logjam going somewhere else. Unless he's comfortable with his role and contending, I could see either. But wouldn't put it past him to want out.

Also, I agree that Smart's playoff shooting with a bandaged hand makes him the true scary Celtics PG.
Theoretically
- Scenario 1 ... Smart takes QO. Gets approx 8 mil next year but after that gets a 4/60 deal.
- Scenario 2 ... Smart signs for 4/44 this offseason.
He could make more in scenario 1. Regardless of which scenario he takes he can still prove himself over the next 4 to 5 years and sign a bigger contract after that.
He could also make a little less in Scenario 1 if his career goes well. And of course he might make MUCH less in Scenario 1 if things go badly.

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
After this series he will not get any good offers. He is killing the Celtics with his dumb turnovers and the amount of shots he is taking and missing. His good defense is not enough to offset that either. He will have to take whatever the Celtics offer him. And they may even trade him after that.

Excellent chance Smart is playing his last games as a Celtic.
I too would be very surprised to see us spend that kind of money on Smart ... as much as there are things about Smart I LOVE.

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
he’s going for the money.’ I’ve never asked him this question. But that’s the impression I get. You can’t blame young guys who want to go out to the highest bidder and thinks he should be a starter and he’s not going to be one in Boston for many years to come.
He is, once again, not very smart.
He will fade away, and choose obscurity like Tony Allen.
He can't start, as he can't shoot, and he doesn't stop shooting. He has even severely regressed on free throws.
If everyone is healthy, there are 18 backup point guard minutes next year.
Per minute, Smart shoots around as often as Tatum and Horford. Those two having a True Shooting % around 58%, and Smart is at 48%.
Clear away bench players so Bird can get minutes.
No team with money will want to hand their future over to Smart. Simmons and Smart shooting the ball for the 76ers, L Ball and Smart shooting for the Lakers, it would be very funny. Dallas and the Kings just drafted "franchise" point guards.
The "Brinks Truck" guy will be thankful when a team offers him the MLE. Smart, he is listed under Elfrid Payton on some lists of wanted free agents.
C Paul, I Thomas, Rondo, T Parker, Exum, Van Fleet, Payton, Teodosic, Lin, Napier, C Joseph, some or all will be free agent point guards.
Overpaying defender Andre Roberson didn't help the Thunder. Overpaying Smart so he can sit on the bench and watch Irving, Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Bird and possibly Rozier won't help the Celtics.

Re: Jackie Mac on Marcus Smart's RFA--"He's going for the money"
Andre Roberson didn't get a team to offer him a contract (I believe). My guess is Smart is going to find a cool market.
Personally, I want him still on the team until, at least, they find someone else with a similar defensive profile. I believe he becomes more offensively tolerable when the team's need for dribble attackers is diminished. Hayward's return will help. Rozier will look to find a opening to do so, but, he often dribbles around too much. (If anyone could use a Kobe critique, it's probably Rozier, he is forever taking the circuitous route rather than attacking the front foot as Kobe suggested to Tatum) And both Tatum and Brown took steps this season in improving their drive and dish ability and I hope they will continue to evolve in this area.
Hopefully, in time, Smart's touches per possession will be greatly reduced.

Making $10M from OKC next year and the year after. He got hurt real early this year, so you may not have seen him.

Smart turned down the deal earlier in the summer because he wanted to leverage his improved shooting over the summer.
We all saw the “It’s a new me” video. And it’s a new him, unfortunately for him he has gotten worse. Last year in the playoffs he was shooting around 40% from 3s. This year, well enough said.

Too many hand injuries for the guy. I really think he would not be as bad of shooter as he is if he didn't have as many hand injuries as he has had. He gambled on himself this past summer and it doesn't look like it worked out for him.

I completely agree with you, and I think his agent will advise him to take the best long-term contract offer he gets. I don't see his shooting ever getting better, so I don't think his value will be any higher next summer than it is this summer.
But it is also a (small) possibility that he bets on himself again and signs the qualifying offer.
