Per Smitty on Celticsblog:

A big driver in how much money Boston will have to offer is what happens with Gordon Hayward and Enes Kanter and their player options for the 2020-21 season. Ainge said he doesn’t have a sense of where either player is leaning. Ainge also noted that his understanding is that those option decisions won’t need to be made until after the draft. The NBA has not confirmed this year, but on Friday, November 13 the league will inform teams, players and agents of updated option deadlines.

Free Agent Targets

Post#44 » by Curmudgeon » Sun Nov 15, 2020 9:33 pm

I think we need to separate a free agent discussion out of the trade discussion.

If Hayward opts out and the Celtics have the full MLE, I'd be targeting Jae Crowder and Goran Dragic. I also like Meyers Leonard, Joe Harris and Paul Millsap (although giving Millsap the required 3 year deal might not be a good idea). Gallinari, Bertans, and Montrezl Harrell are probably out of Boston's price range, although Gallinari has said that he'd take less to go to a winning team.

It the Celtics are stuck with the taxpayer MLE, available players include some bigs--Demarcus Cousins, Ian Mahinmi, Aron Baynes and Harry Giles-- some shooters: Belinelli, Bryn Forbes, Langston Galloway, Alec Burks and Pat Connaughton-- and some hustle guys, e.g. Dellevadova and Etwaun Moore.

Anthony Davis has declined his option and is now an unrestricted free agent.

I like Dragic a lot more than Crowder. Our issues vs. Miami ultimately had to do with the fact that (A) we had no answer for Bam inside with Theis and (B) we could not collapse the zone at the point of attack off the dribble.

For bigs, I think the answer there is the draft and getting Timelord/Grant more minutes at the 5 against studs like Bam. For the POA issue, my hope is (A) Tatum continues to progress and take over the primary playmaker role and (B) we add another guy who can get break down a D and make a pass to free up shooters. Hopefully Kemba's knee feels better in the playoffs this year too, though I think his size will always make his ability to defeat a long zone like Miami a bit tricky.

We have plenty of good shooters. Kemba can spot up, Tatum is lights-out, Brown is very good, Smart is streaky but teams must respect him. We need one more guy who can go off the dribble and get the defense collapsing/rotating.

Nothing like the pressure of the league MVP watching over your shoulder to make sure you upgrade the team to force some action.

I know he’s old and calcifying but Fwiw I’ve always liked Milsap.

Baynes/Giles/Milsap enough to get me interested

With Haywood opting out of 34 Million, could they re-sign him for 4 years, 110 Million?

What's the odds of Haywood staying healthy?

Hayward was basically healthy in Utah, although he broke a finger (his left hand 4th metacarpal in 2016 in Utah).

In 3 years in Boston, Hayward:
Dislocated left ankle (his a*s landed on his left ankle from about 3 feet off the ground)
Broke left tibia (see above)
Broke left hand (collison with LaMarcus Aldridge) requiring pin and plate insertion to repair 4th metacarpal bone
Sprained right ankle (twice)
Sprained right knee
Strained his calf
Took a solid shot to the face (Doug McDermott's palm) that did not break his nose or require entry to concussion protocol
Left Foot Nerve Issue
Strained his neck

Only if it's to trade him somewhere. I want no part of him here anymore we paid him enough money

So who should we target when Hayward decides to walk away and signs somewhere else.
