Condolences to Celtic nation; this is a sad day for basketball lovers everywhere. He was just one of those guys that I looked up to a lot (by reading about books him and watching a ton of interviews etc, I'm not THAT old) and somehow, despite his advanced age, you'd feel like they would be around forever. He was like the soul of basketball itself, and it's memory of a different time for the sport, and your country even.

Rest in peace now, Mister Russell.

Not suprised by the news given his age, but devastated either way. RIP Mr. Russell.

The Celtic family and the human family lost a special man today. Both families should be grateful that he was in their midst for so many magnificent years.

Bad day for Black trailblazers -- Nichelle Nichols died as well.

(The writer of that obituary evidently didn't have a high opinion of her, but did refrain from mentioning her late night ads for psychic hotlines.)

This one hurt. Not as bad as Tommy. But close. All of our legends are leaving us. It's been a rough couple of years for Celtic greats

So many lost Celtic legends these days. He did his best to make this world a better place and one can only hope his legacy prevails.

First Tommy, now Bill. What the hell man.

Greatest winner in the history of basketball and a greater man off the court. Says it all.

Love Tom Brady and he is the goat of the nfl, but Russell is the greatest Boston sports athlete ever. He’s meant everything to the Celtics and the city of Boston, he’s what made Boston the biggest winners in the country.

Old time Sixer fan here. I grew up hating the Celtics because Bill Russell almost always found a way to beat us. Wilt’s 67 team has been in the conversation of GOAT only because they were the only team to beat a healthy Russell on the court, from the time he was a junior at USF. Nothing but the highest respect for the man. Having watched the game since the mid 60s. I got to rank HIM GOAT.

Was a huge Celtics fan growing up in Montreal. Though admittedly, they were the only team we could get on TV consistently. It didn't hurt that they won the championship every single year that I was a youngster. (guess I really tipped my age, lol)

Switched to Raptors when they came into existence.

Thought this board the most appropriate place to express my condolences.

Rest in Piece, my favourite Celtic player of all time.
