As a HC, he runs his players into the ground, is distracted from his defensive prep, and might or might not be in over his head.

That might have been true at one point but there's an argument the game has passed him by on that end. The Knicks defensively have ranked 4th, 11th, 19th, 9th and 13th during Thibodeau's tenure. When he was in Minnesota the Wolves were 27th, 25th and 24th in defense. Even his last year in Chicago he could only manage the 11th best defensive rating despite having Noah fresh off a DPOY campaign and Butler available for 65+ games. He hasn't built a dominant defense in a long time.

I probably wouldn't extend him now but I also wouldn't fire him. Like others have said, let's see how this season plays out (at least the first half)

Unless Spoelstra wants to come here I'm not sure there are really better options
