Why would a rebuilding team wanting high draft picks, especially for next year use cap space to try to improve and become a fringe playoff team, which is the absolute worst place to be. The best free agent in 2014 will be 37 year old Kobe. Having a ton of cap space for 2014 means NOTHING and signing players when you want to rebuild, not remain semi relevant is an awful way to rebuild.

DJ comes off the books in two years and THAT year of free agency is significantly better/deeper.

What you say is pretty true on one level. The FA class of 2014 will actually have some good players if guys opt out but in the Celtics situation they shouldn't go after that FA class. The rebuilding Celtics shouldn't be interested in the 2014 FA class unless Lebron unexpectedly wants to play in Boston. That being said there is a major benefit of lets say trading KG for a 1 year expiring contract instead of a 2 year expiring contract like DJ. The player with the one year expiring contract can be flipped at the deadline for a player with an additional year and the Celtics get compensated for it with a lottery protected pick or two.

Instead of the Deandre Jordan's, I personally think this Celtic team should be rebuilt with lots of draft picks. With just 1 pick from trading KG/Rivers, it just didn't make enough sense for the Celtics. I'd honestly rather have Rivers return to television and KG retire -- if he wants -- then that trade.

You win a lot more with Pierce, KG, Doc than DJ too... so this trade could benefit you guys in tanking.

We can tank with a vet min center, not an 11 mil a year 8 pts/ 9 boards center. Keep on trying to convince yourself.
Good assessment:

Like I said. No matter what we are making trades. Just maybe not with the Celtics.

Hey, I say, fair enough. But we can say the exact same thing just trade out "Celtics" for "Clippers."

Agreed. Neither team is ruined. Just think the short term repercussions are worse for Boston as I said, although since you guys seem fine with letting Doc, KG and Pierce go... maybe it isn't bad for you.

It isn't bad at all for the Celtics as long as their (I'm assuming) tanking plans aren't interrupted. The Celtics can simply let go of PP. And at that point, I suspect KG is willing to go elsewhere and expands his list of destinations or retires. So in one sense NOT having Jordan -- a regular season player more then a post season one -- would be a very good situation for Boston since it may make it even easier to tank.... although Jordan's free throw shooting in the 4th quarter could have come in handy.

Tanking is pointless with a draft lottery.

This is a league where the team with the worst record in NBA history didn't get the #1 pick but a 33 win team did.

Don't need to convince myself because I thought it was a fair trade. Just saying... it has more benefits for both teams than meets the eye. You guys are acting like this is a huge lopsided trade but read any neutral parties opinions and you'll see that they strongly feel it was mutually beneficial as well.

BTW a minimum contract center probably won't cost you games at the line like the NBA's worst 38 percent free throw shooter DJ. ;)

I understand why you want it to happen. There isn't much of a reason as a Celtics fan to want it to happen. I'm actually a lot happier today than I was yesterday. Jordan is a negative as far as I'm concerned and seeing KG retire a Celtic would be worth passing on the pick. Plus if Doc is playing both sides like it seems, I'd be happy to not give him the pleasure of getting his way.

Sounds like deal not truly dead. It's being reported Ainge is really trying to save face and there is immense pressure on him right now. Apparently the Clippers don't care about KG much, mostly doing deal for Doc.

Ramona Shelburne ‏@ramonashelburne 43s
Put it this way: Clippers were asked to give up 2 first rounders for right to pay Doc $7 mill/per year

Which the Celtics would prefer not pay anyways.

Pressure on Ainge and needing to save face? Someone explain this to me.

Not me claiming sources guys. This was from two guests on ESPN 710, one of which is EXTREMELY reliable in Ramona Shelburne. Sounds like the general feeling is deal still likely gets done, just not now. Clippers will finish job interviews today and tomorrow and Boston will have another chance to deal.

Most of us realize the deal is not necessarily dead. It is a common tactic in negotiations, but if a deal is done it has nothing to do with Ainge needing to save face or feeling pressure. It is more likely that the Clippers are feeling the pressure. I won't be shocked if they come back offering that 2nd pick.
