believe it or not, the guys Garuba reminds me of the most are Draymond Green and Bill Russell.

Green - probably the closest comparison. Garuba is very similar except 2 inches taller.

Russell - ok this might seem crazy since russell is a top 5-6 player of all time, but the defense, the way garuba is a tough, strong, athletic guy around 6'8"/6'9" who is quick, can defend and and is tenacious going after loose balls, rebounds, blocked shots and just defending in general, you see some similarities. Especially with Garuba only at age 19, you can see how if he keeps workin and improve and he can get even closer to that Russell level. oh and Garuba - while he obviously isn't quite as good defensively/rebounding/shot blocking/passing as russell, garuba is at least very good in area plus garuba can shoot from 3 which russell couldn't. Garuba is only 31% from 3 this season and i came across an article that said that from early december to mid April he shot 39% from 3, not bad at all for a 19 year old forward (24/61 from 3) and he has a pretty smooth and compact shooting motion from 3, off the catch or off the dribble.

Good stuff in these clips:

;t=5s

still, i'd probably daft kai Jones over garuba, it's close though and if Jones is gone, I'm good with taking Garuba at 16. Garuba was rated my most as top 10 draft pick a year ago. most have moved him down to the 15-20 now because of lack of ball skills but i feel like his ball skills are decent enough. i like what he brings with the size, strength, toughness, tenacity, hustle, effort, motor, rebounding, rim protection, passing and a little bit of shooting and dribble drive moves. good rim runner too,.

Garuba has all-NBA potential. Not saying that he's a lock, l but if he's available I hope Ainge doesn't pass on him the way he passed on Giannis.

I just popped in to write about Garuba too. He'd be a nice pick at 16 if he's still there. Apparently though, he may require to be selected in top 15 to pay his way out of current contract: https://www.marca.com/baloncesto/nba/2021/05/27/60afe8faca4741a20b8b45da.html

If he were chosen among the top 15 positions in the draft to be held on July 29, there would be a good chance that he would decide to make the leap to the NBA , since he would be awarded a contract that would allow him to pay the termination clause when Madrid and fulfill his dream of playing in the best league in the world

Drafting Garuba and bringing Madar over would be a really good summer move, IMO. Makes the team younger, of course, but I think the tenure of Waters, Edwards and Tacko is effectively over, better to bring in more young athletic talent. There will be time to bring in vet talent and decide what to do with Kemba before the next trade deadline.

Yeah, he's a winner. Still young but has already played for years and won't be such a rookie except for getting used to the NBA. I'm not sure about the Giannis comparison, per se, but I was screaming at the screen to pick Giannis in 2013, figuring Danny moved up precisely to get him. I hope they don't make a mistake by going for a safer pick, Garuba is strong, long and fast, seems ideal for modern NBA in that small 5 role ala Draymond and Bam.

Actually, that would really suck if that classic JT game against Washington only got a us a playoff date with Brooklyn, then Wiz snag Garuba one pick before Celtics and he becomes all-NBA.

I want Boston to move into the top 6-8 and draft Davion Mitchell. He is going to be really good.

I still like Chris Duarte at 16.

I like Duarte also. An older player who knocks down threes. I bet he could be a helpful bench player next year.

Yes, a sr. Knocks down 3s, creates his own shot and defends. No one here is talking about him.

He had a 30 point, 11 rebound and 8 steals game in the tournament. Played with Pritchard last year at Oregon.

This draft is loaded in the mid first round. If Danny does his homework, we are definitely getting a good prospect there.

Interesting mock draft here:

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/nba-mock-draft-2021-cade-cunningham-looks-like-no-1-pick-regardless-of-who-wins-lottery/

If those are the first 15 picks, Ainge would have his choice of Kai Jones, Jalen Johnson or Jaden Springer. Having to choose between those 3 would be a good problem to have.. Garuba still on the board too..

I was gonna say Garuba is the guy I wanted. Dude has real potential. Would fit in here great.
Good assessment:

it does seem like a really deep draft with well over 30 dudes who look like they could all be legit NBA contributors..

Agreed. Garuba and Madar would be a solid duo to add to this team. We would be young, yes. But we really should be thinking 3 years from now what this team will look like. Star players typically aren't ready to truly compete for a title until age 27 or even 28.

3 years from now Tatum will be 26 and Brown will be 27. And guys like durant, harden, irving, curry, chris paul, Lebron, anthony davis, kawhi, etc will be on their way out.

We just need to stay competitive over the next 2-3 years and after that is when this team could really be scary once our young core is developed..Garuba and Madar could be 2 nice pieces to add to the young core.

3 years from now we could have:

C Time Lord
F Garuba
F Tatum
G Brown
G Madar

Bench: Smart, Fournier, Nesmith, Langford (probably only 1 or 2, maybe 3 of them will still be here, I can't imagine we still have all 4 of these guys and all 4 are coming off the bench in 3 years)

Seems like Duarte is projected to go somewhere in the 20-30 range (we have 16th pick) and SG is the last position we need help with (already have Brown, Smart, Fournier, Nesmith, Langford)

Projections don’t always matter. Another wing from Oregon in Dillion Brooks went in the 2nd round. If that draft was a do over, he would hon top 15.

Duarte is better than Nesmith and Langford and more of a complete player than Fournier. Besides, Fournier is a free agent and one of Langford or Nesmith could be traded.

Fair counterpoint.

And that's why breaking down the draft is so fun. Especially when we have the 16th pick in a deep draft. I mean, if we had a top 4 or 5 pick, it would simply be discussing 4 or 5 prospects. but with the 16th pick in a deep draft, there's so many different directions we could go..there's literally like 20 (maybe more) guys we could possibly go with - plus it's even trickier cause there's really only like 7 guys who we know for sure will be off the board when we're up.

Based on what I have seen, the only guys who without question will absolutely be off the board when we're up at 16 are:

Mobley
Suggs
Cunningham
Green
Kuminga
Keon Johnson
Scottie Barnes

There's literally no chance in hell we're getting 1 of those 7 guys. Literally everyone else, there's at least a chance they will still be on the board at 16.

This next group, it seems likely they will be off the board, but it's by no means a sure thing as I've seen multiple mocks/rankings where they go 16th or later. We probably won't get 1 of these 7 guys, but there's at least a small chance of them still being there:

Sengun
Giddey
Moody
Bouknight
Wagner
Mitchell
Jalen Johnson

Those seem like the consensus top 14 guys.

This next group it seems like a 50/50 on them still being there in the 16 spot:

Kai Jones
Kispert
Isaiah Jackson

These guys will likely still be available at 16, with a small chance they go in the top 15:
Garuba
Springer
Tre Mann

It would be a shocker if someone other than a guy named above goes in the top 15.

I haven't come across a rankings or mock that has someone go in the top 15 outside of the 20 guys listed above..and out of those 20, there's really only 7 of them who no doubt about it will go in the top 15. so 20-7, that leaves 13 players, plus Duarte, Ziaire Williams and maybe a handful of others who we could possibly pick in the 16 spot. so literally like 15-20 possible guys we could be discussing in this thread. Or we could trade the pick! lol

I haven’t seen much of Kai Jones but he is 6’11, really athletic and fluid. I like that can is getting better at shooting the 3. But 4.8 rebounds per game? That’s a bit of a concern. Never loved bigs that are tall and athletic but can’t board.

I like his teammate Jericho Sims in the 2nd round. He can’t stretch the floor but this guy gets after it on the defensive end. Rebounds well, can guard multiple positions and moves his feet well.

from what I have gathered, the rebounding (and points) numbers are low for him because:

a) he was part of a crowded front court which contained him, Sims and Greg Brown. One of them (sims) was a senior and the other (brown) was the more heralded prospect so it was hard to get more minutes and when he was out there, often he was out there with another big man to compete with for points and rebounds
b) Jones is still raw, still developing as he just started playing basketball at age 15 and it wasn't until age 16 when he went to a basketball camp put on by Deandre Ayton that Jones really started to become an actual basketball prospect
c) seems like while he showed flashes of brilliance at times, consistency (consistency both in terms of production and effort) was an issue

Jones seems like kind of a risky pick, but he also seems like he has a high ceiling too.

these 2 dudes seem fairly knowledgeable and they break down Jones. Both of them see him as a lottery pick..1 of them talks about how he's kind of a high risk/high reward type guy who he thinks could be an all-star in 5 years, or he could be out of the league in 5 years:

it certainly seems possible the draft may fall that way and we have a few good choices at 16. Why I said in the other thread I don't want to attach our 16th pick with any Kemba trade.

Remember it was me who said it here first. Every year a player gets picked that no one expected. Last year PP was selected and no one was expecting that in rd 1..

GREGG BROWN is my surprise sleeper pick. The more I look the more I see a John Collins clone. His talent and need fits us to a tee.

Still not saying I want him more than JJ or Kai Jones, but he is closing Bigtime IMO.

Mt top 4 of possible available picks are

1- Jalen Johnson
2- Kai Jones
3- Gregg Brown
4- Zaire Williams

Still looking into Isaiah Todd and Isaiah Jackson though.
