Re: Celtics Trivia Game
The answer to the previous question can be inferred from https://www.si.com/nba/2014/08/15/bill-russell-boston-celtics-ring-leader-si-60-frank-deford , which in any case is a great article, I think from 1999. At least, it names the high school teammate.

Yes. I learned that from the article linked above.

Then it was a great guess.
And to make it clear to those who didn't know -- Frank Robinson was the first African-American manager in Major League Baseball, just as Bill Russell was the first African-American head coach in the NBA.

Re: Celtics Trivia Game
Danny Ainge just traded away All-Star Isaiah Thomas. He also traded away All-Stars Antoine Walker and Kevin Garnett, as well as two guys who were just one season removed from All-Star appearances in Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce.
Before that, when is the last time the Celtics traded away a guy right after he had an All-Star season? And when is the last time the Celtics traded away a guy only one season removed from an All-Star appearance?
(Please treat mid-season and end-of-season trades the same for the purposes of these questions.)

I incorrectly thought the first question had an answer from the 1970s (specifically Paul Westphal). Now I think the most recent answer may be from the 1950s.
The second question has an answer from the 1980s.
Perhaps you can find better answers than I did?

When you said 50's I thought Ed Macaulay for the rights to Russell - looked it up to verify and he made the all star game for St Louis the next year. I also though Bailey Howell in the 60s but he was two years removed from being an all star when the Celtics traded him

I had to look it up too, of course, to be sure. But Macauley was a perennial all-star, including the season right before Red traded him in the offseason.
As for the guy traded a year after his all-star appearance in the 1980s ...
Hint 1: It was almost exactly a year, because he was sent out around the trade deadline.
Hint 2: He gets mentioned around here a lot.

Gotta be Danny, right? Good hint!

Well I'll be - it's that baseball player, I did not remember him making the all-star team. Which is funny, considering how hard I took it when he got traded.

Anyhow, I love trivia questions about guys outside their usual roles, such as:
-- Which senior basketball executive renounced himself as a FA?
-- Which NFL records does Mike Vrabel hold?

Have no idea on #2, but #1 = Joe Dumars.

The Vrabel one is about his touchdown catches, not sure the specific stat.

Absolutely!
I think we've had it before in this thread.

Of course. They all are based on:
-- Every catch he ever got was for a 1-yard TD.
-- He caught TDs in Super Bowls in 2 consecutive calendar years.
In particular, he has the most catches of anybody who scored a TD on every catch, and he caught Super Bowl TDs in as many consecutive years as anybody else ever did.
I was also going to conjecture that he has the lowest average YPC, but probably there's some poor schmuck who has a negative figure for that.

Ooh, interesting. I don't think we've traded too many high profile players. And I don't think we've had many low profile all stars.
Ainge may have made the all star team in 1988.
I doubt Maxwell made it in 1985-maybe 1984.
McAdoo was probably an all star before we traded him. I doubt Westphal was.
I'll guess Ainge and McAdoo.

McAdoo's last all-star season was before he was traded to the Celtics. Maxwell was never an All-Star.
Ainge is the guy who was traded almost exactly one year after playing in the All-Star Game.
The most recent example (for either question) I can think of before the ones involving Ainge was in 1956.

But...did the question say the All-Star appearance had to be as a Celtic? All-star 1977-78 for New York; played 1978-79 for Boston; traded to Detroit in 1979 1 year removed from the All-Star appearance! I think he is technically the right answer
