Re: Jayson Tatum Thread: Part Deuce
I've watched some YT vids of people saying Tatum's lack of play making this year has been a concern.
I'm curious to what the board thinks, as I have no problem with it. To me it seems like we are really pushing it in transition instead of slowing it down, and we have more capable ball handlers this year in Smart, White, and Brogdon.
He's made the extra pass a lot, and has made some really pretty skip passes to shooters in the corner. IDK what they expect from him, especially with another 25ppg scorer on the wing

First off, it’s a 6 game sample, so those people are silly. His potential assists are one below last season, but mostly? For some reason that shouldn’t be happening, Jaylen is leading the team in usage so far. Jaylen at 31.5, Tatum at 30.5, I think it should be more like Tatum 31 and Jaylen 28ish, but that may get me yelled at. I just don’t love a 1-1 assist to turnover guy leading the offense in usage.
I think as they really start getting more comfortable with the offense, his assists will jump up to 5 or maybe 6.

Tatum should never pass tbh. 72% ts speaks for itself. Everyone else shooting is a worse outcome; unless you're grant or hauser.

They say don’t meet your hero’s…. And nobodies perfect…. But I find Jaylen, Smart and Tatum to be extremely easy to root for both on and off the court.

Give this man the damn ball. Yes inverted screens are a fun play but he’s our best primary creator and it’s much easier to deny the pass in crunch time if he’s offbal.

Bring back the heavy Tatum PnR offense, he will always operate best in space with a head of steam.
Edit: And more importantly, it makes the team more dangerous offensively.

At the very very least in crunch time/4th quarters. I get if you wanna experiment and be cute or save his legs a bit during the game by having him be the screener or off ball gravity but when you need a bucket go to your best option

Re: Jayson Tatum Thread: Part Deuce
I don’t want full heliocentric luka ball for Tatum but something in between what it’s been these last 4-5 games and that would be nice

Re: Jayson Tatum Thread: Part Deuce
Tatum is currently having career high 3pt rate, free throw rate and his highest rim attempts rate since his rookie season. Some of the hot shooting might not be sustainable but he is getting much better shots than years past so his bump in efficiency should sustain to a large degree.
I'm not too worried about the lack of pick and rolls for Tatum right now. We know it works, we're still in the part of the season where the team should be experimenting to figure out if they have other stuff that works too.
Per NBA tracking, Tatum is at 4.7 possessions as a P&R ball handler this year vs 5.8 last year (6.9 in the playoffs). It's not a huge difference (I'm also willing to hear arguments that last year numbers were already too low).

Re: Jayson Tatum Thread: Part Deuce
I think the introduction of Brogdon has shifted lineups where Tatum used to be the ball handler. He is averaging 3 less front court touches per game than he did last season. Jaylen upped his touches by 2 in the same metric, which has likely affected this dynamic too.steefP2 wrote:I don’t want full heliocentric luka ball for Tatum but something in between what it’s been these last 4-5 games and that would be nice

Even with his inefficient shooting from the field, he had a great game! Had stretches when he dominated the paint and the defensive end. Won't let himself be denied getting to the rim. Not trying to fish for fouls but relentlessly attacking. He knows there's no one on the Bulls team who can guard him one-on-one.
