Grant made me a believer when he held his own against Gasol who may be past is prime is big, tall, strong and savvy enough to take advantage of a huge mismatch but couldn’t.
"I think the criticism's stupid," Stevens said. "So I don't care. I'm with Jaylen (Brown) on that. Those two had achieved more than most 25 and 26 year olds ever had. I'd rather be in the mix and have my guts ripped out than suck."

Grant "Al Horford" Williams is playing like a 5 year vet, not a guy playing in his 3rd NBA game. Obviously he's not as good as Horford (yet????), but he does the same kind of thing that Horford did - he cements the team together. He's the kind of guy that plays well on both sides of the ball, and he has amazing court awareness for such a young player. I can't wait to see what becomes of this kid. He might just end up being the steal of the draft.

True, he needs to gain a tad more confidence with time and I think he will. He needs to take them wide open 3s, he's actually a fairly good shooter. Once that happens, he has literally no weaknesses in his game(he ain't no superstar but he literally has no weaknesses)..
Good assessment:

So before the trio of Kemba-Brown-Tatum put away the Knicks with a 22-6 run in LESS THAN 5 minutes, Grant was heavily involved in every single field goal the Celtics made in a mini-12-to-5 run near end of the third to 8:20 remaining in the 4th when Williams was subbed out -- two alley-oop conversions via Jaylen, an offensive rebound which later led to Smart's desperation 3, a screen to free up Edwards for another 3. (The other two points were Tatum FTs.) I'm not even including his huge block against Portis, an offensive tap out to Smart which he didn't convert, and being able to stop penetration while also recovering to his man on defense. Spend time just tracking his movement on the court and don't pay attention to the box score.

It's really early in his career, but I think we may have a potential high-level role player on our hands. This guy gets it. Exactly the type of low-usage, do-it-all player you need on a team loaded with scorers/players who need the ball in their hands.

Partly, it's just going to take time for the refs to start respecting him. It's annoying that the calls can hold a player back or give a player too much room, but I think the refs eventually let Grant's game breathe based on his heady play. A couple times yesterday, I thought, "No way they call that on Al."

I feel like Grant and Marcus have the potential to eat a lot of second units lunches. They can bust a lot of plays on defense and make things happen on offense without being scorers.

Grant (and Rob) getting minutes this early in the season is a good thing. I think this will pay off later in the season if they can solidify themselves as consistent rotation guys. Kanter (and Theis) having minor injuries and sitting out a few games could be a blessing in disguise. Kinda reminds me of how Draymond Green cracked the Warriors rotation (and eventually stole David Lee's spot).

The question entering the season was who will be the best center for the Celtics: Theis, Kanter, Robert Williams, or Poirier?

Turned out it was a trick question. The answer so far has been Grant Williams.

At some point they'll need to start him. Guess Hayward is headed back to the bench..

Rob is turning out to be a decent and interesting screener .. if he can ever add a jump shot, just Baynes level 12-15 footers and threes... and Grant’s blocks last night were actually shocking to me - plus the fact Stevens told him he’d play center a day before the game and he handled it so well. He seems a little bit like the Professor Hulk version of Charles Barkley, skilled and undersized, more careful in his decisions, and not throwing people through plate glass windows.

Williams is confirming a lot of his pre-draft hype - we’ll see what he turns into, I’m interested to see what his rebounding rate turns out to be after a couple of months - and the possibility still exists that he could reach third-scorer level, with a game like TJ Warren and PJ Washington.. he and Marcus need to be career Celtics..

When (not if) Grant can start hitting his 3's, if will be 80% (my number) of Horford already.

I'm more interested in how many rebounds our team gets when he's out there than I am in his personal rebounds. I saw him neutralize a lot of opponents with his positioning. The way he plays, I'd expect that his teammates rebound rates jump while he's boxing out.

Exactly. Someone complained he got only 1 rebound, but he made sure others got the board in many other defensive possessions. His MO seems to be go hard at offensive rebounds, and on the defensive boards, make sure he blocks out so there can be no putback, and he puts his teammates in a position to grab the board. Very unselfish and willing to do all the non box score winning plays.

Jaylen was right in his post game when he said with the way he's playing, you can't keep him off the floor. He needs at least 20 minutes every night, and more as he progresses.
